Socrates the elegant player

You know Socrates don't u ?!
If u do or don't read this

One of the most elegant midfield generals in soccer history, Socrates, began his career in Botafogo. He was never a teenage star and didn’t make his debut in the Brazilian national team until he was 25. He was blessed with wonderful skills, vision and seemed to have so many options when he was on the ball. He was able to play the ball wherever and whenever he wanted. His heel-kicks became famous world wide. These rare skills combined with the fact that he was a medical student more than justified him being nicknamed “the doctor”. Socrates captained Brazil’s fantastic World Cup team of 1982 partnering Cerezo, Falcao and Zico in midfield. He scored twice in that tournament, one of them being a marvellous goal against the Soviet Union when he dribbled past two players before firing it home from long range. Brazil didn’t reach the semifinals in that tournament, but played some wonderful soccer.

Socrates was not an ordinary athlete, infact he didn’t look at himself as an athlete. He smoked a pack of sigarettes every day, and that was one of the reasons to why he never settled in Italy when he arrived there in 1984 to play for Fiorentina. The lifestyle didn’t suit him and he went back to Brazil a year later.

In 1986, Socrates again was instrumental for Brazil in their attempt of winning the World Cup, but France and Platini won on penalties in the quarterfinal after a wonderful match. Socrates missed one of the penalties in the shoot-out. He was the only player of the survivors of the 1982 team who really reached the same level, but it wasn’t enough to take them through. He scored more than a goal every third game in average for Brazil, which is excellent for a midfielder and added two more to his account in the Mexico World Cup.

At clublevel he played most of his career for Botafogo and Corinthians for whom he won three Sao Paulo state championships. Socrates also played for Flamengo winning a Rio state championship before ending his career in 1990 playing for Santos.

I hope u like it .:D

why i'm interested in sport ?!! Do u think this gonna happen ?!!

In my day our hero was pele, unfortunatly my brother is the history buff on that one: We were on the same team. Thanks for sharing, not to many people talk about soccor here in the US which is a shame. Peace

It is nice that you are educating us on football and footballers. I used to hate football until now...I am looking forward to read the history of PELE et al...Nice one...

Lyn 22. July 2008, 18:39

 Pele's story is historical, also once you start watching *Football* It gets addicting!

Afro Mum 22. July 2008, 19:06

Ha ha ha...Do you like David Beckham?

Lyn 23. July 2008, 02:56

The name is very familiar to me, though I can not think of any particulars right now; plus I must admit it has been a while since I have watched much of any sports the past few years but am going to get back into it starting with "American football" this September! So you are a fan of soccor=football?

Afro Mum 24. July 2008, 00:23

He is a famous English footballer who moved to the US and his wife (Victoria Beckham) was formerly a member of the pop group called Spice Girls. She is two years older than David...

You can google the name 'David Beckham'...Most kids in the UK wish to be like him because he was once the highest paid footballer here.

Lyn 26. July 2008, 09:09

Wow, ok ya: thanks for the knowledge* I remember when the Spice Girls became popular, my youngest daughter loved them  So Beckham, he played the football that is called soccor in other countries? I know why it sounded familiar now; I was thinking of Beckman, who plays "American football". Does Beckham still play? Thanks again  Lyn

Afro Mum 26. July 2008, 21:28

No not Beckman...

Lyn 27. July 2008, 03:53

Yes, that is what I realized but was just curious as to whether Beckham was still playing soccor/football?!!

Afro Mum 28. July 2008, 21:32

You are right...follow the link or copy and paste in your web browser. I think his career is coming to an end. He may set up FC club in Miami.
He is presently with MLS All-Star in the US.

do u know about Aamir khan. the most creative actor in india. his film "Logan" was nominated for academy awards(oscar). he's always different.

u know, he never attends the parties of actor-actresses or tv program. even to take a prize, he never go. actually he avoids to expose himself.

the newest movie from his production is "JAANE TU YA JANE NA". it means "U KNOW OR DON'T KNOW". a very romantic movie. it is full of comedy, but u'll feel trgedy all the time. a quiet different rare combinetion. u'll miss something if u don't watch it.

request to u to watch it.

Afreen(افرين) 31. August 2008, 10:12

Well you can watch that movie only if you know about "cricket" and its "Lagaan"{it means TAX}(the movie's name) and also it deals with how indians were slaves of britishers and how britishers ill treated indians just by taking taxes(even though its there own motherland),well its a movie about struggle of india to independence.
And  blog has come a long way from soccer to cricket.

mailmurshed 31. August 2008, 10:32

Bhuban(aamir, hero of movie) learnt cricket within few days. So, u r also able to learn cricket easily except one rule. It's Dark worth Louis. It's a very complexive rule. Even, i found nothing about it on the net. In matches, it's calculated by a software.
