On a few occasions, I have had an opportunity to dine in such a room in a Japanese restaurant. We did sit on the floor, but it wasn't like I was expecting. The floor underneath the table was sunken, so when you sat on the floor around the table, your legs still bent at the knee with your feet on the lower floor. And they had little, chair-like seats that were available if you wanted them. The seat was flush with the upper floor, and there was a little back, so you could lean back just like you could in a regular chair. This restaurant closed because the surrounding neighborhood was in decline (for instance, near the former location, there is now a strip club). The management said they didn't want to be there any more.
Then to my delight, the owners of the former restaurant opened up another Japanese restaurant about one mile from my home. It is a much smaller establishment, and it no longer has much in the way of a Japanese decor. There are no private rooms. BUT the food is delicious, the service is good, and I can't believe how close it is to my home. I can even walk there.
Because I like the restaurant so much, this poses something of a dilemma. Whenever we are considering trying a new Japanese restaurant, we are conflicted because we want to support our local one by giving them our business. So it turns out that we don't sample other Japanese restaurants the way we would if we weren't so very loyal.
