Like A Teapot

"Enlightened or not, it is all the very same. Have a cup of tea! "

Weekly quote for tight-asses

,

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness,
all foes to real understanding. Likewise tolerance . . .
and charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired
by vegetating in our little corner of the earth.

So true. There are large areas of my home country, Scotland, where people are born, work and die in the same tiny communities. Even in this day and age of fast and affordable travel, a trip 60 miles away to the nearest city is a huge event for them!

Correspondingly, attitudes are blinkered, narrow and change at a glacial pace.

They even have a word for people born outwith these communities: In-comers. To be an In-comer is practically the same thing as coming from Mars - you are not to be trusted or, if they can avoid it, even spoken to.

That is one great example you gave, Granty. Always good to learn more about matters in your part of the world.
