Amazing things in Belgium

, , , ,

Having not heard from my mother for a while, I decided to give her a call tonight. I had suspected that she had gone to visit her father this past weekend and I was right. Apart from seeing her father, she also attended a dinner event celebrating the birth of one of her sisters' first grandchild.

She also informed me that she was in the middle of watching the final episode of the American television series Prison Break. Now that was interesting. First I did not expect the show put on Chinese television. Second, I never thought she would ever be interested in such material. I asked if she was watching the English version or a dubbed Chinese version, she said it was the latter. She also mentioned that the main actor of the show, whom she thought was quite good, had visited China and gone on a popular talk show earlier, which I did remember reading about here.

Though I knew about the tv series, I have never watched it myself and could not immediately recall its English title. So I typed in the Chinese title to google it. And guess what, "Reality Prison Break Show in Belgium" emerged as one of the top search results. I clicked on it and found it a breaking news item. An English BBC version is here.

This is amazing material. Not the least because a similar incident took place in Belgium a few years ago and things of Belgium seem to have made quite a bit of headlines lately. Yesterday I was going to comment on this remarkable Belgian on the right. He was a painter of the 19th century. He may not be a great artist, but he truly had guts. And I admire him for that despite what The Economist says.

Only in Belgium. I had to laugh when I first heard the news.
Never heard about the Wiertz guy.

solid copper 28. July 2009, 10:27

Yes, only in Belgium, really. I now remember the buzz here about Belgian prison escape with a helicopter a few days ago. I only heard the headline on air and did not associate the story with the tv show.

That Wiertz guy is no less amazing and I don't blame the politician who accepted his bold proposal.

I'll follow that link later. Thanks.

america strikes again with their "bad television shows" giving people bad ideas.

I thought every queen wanted to break free.

Pommes frites! Don't forget the potatoes and horseradish sauce. :D

daxonmacs 29. July 2009, 01:39

Pommes frites and simmered meat with mayo, if you're talking a Sunday day out, Matt :D

noah counte 29. July 2009, 03:52

I had 'em by themselves, and slathered in horseradish mayo. Delicious!

I know :D
One week later, a 62 years old mother helps her son escape from prison.
They had broken in , into a dock, stole a ladder, climbed over the roofs where dear mom was waiting.
Sorry, I cannot take this serious.
Few years ago, in Dendermonde, where a prison holds dangerous gangsta's, 28 man were spotted by neighbouring civilians, walking over the prison's wall.
Turned out the locks of the cell doors were in a deteriorated state.
Now I ask you, what's the importance of the state of a lock, in prison? lmao

Two weeks ago, I watched the speeches in the Flemish Parliament, where they were discussing the image of the Flanders in the international press, seems they took care of it, already. :D

solid copper 30. July 2009, 19:38

The flanders, from young to old, are quite something, eh? Well, at least some news have been about Belgian art.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 20:36

There's more at here than what reached your eyes and ears, rest assured.
One, nearby, is Jan Fabre, but this link won't tell you all.

solid copper 30. July 2009, 20:49

Thanks for the link. I'd sure like to know more.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 20:56

Well, you 'd better start learning dutch then. We're not waiting for the outside world to spot us.
I already pointed this out in an earlier, already deleted, post, about Antwerpen, the city and its inhabitants. The story continues. The city as well as all the rest in and about it is a story of continuous change.
For us, the national government is the first external or international force, what's behind or beyond, we see, know and don't care too much about, yet.

solid copper 30. July 2009, 21:06

Hehe, I mean to know more about Belgian art.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 21:12

Yeah, well I personally think there's a lot of interesting weirdos here

solid copper 30. July 2009, 21:15

Me, too.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 21:18

Okay, one clue, many seem to have missed. The old Duchess of Brabant. It's tail is worn in our face p: , connecting both parts forever again, regardless any international committee or its decisions or as they are sold here ' concretes'.

Sorry there's no translation for Brabant.
But this should give you a clue.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 21:18

You are way too subtle for my poor english copper.

noah counte 30. July 2009, 21:23

Belgium has given us a ton of famous people.

Eddy Merkx is at the top of the current top ten, and he's one of my favorites

solid copper 30. July 2009, 21:28

The way you talk, it seems that you don't need no good English, if you know what I mean.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 21:30

Oh man, for cycling we have to go back to the seventies, for football, to the eighties, last decade we had tennis stars, haha, we are only a small country of paysants

Nothing like Merckx will ever see daylight again.Sorry.

You know what drives us Matt? Wind from upfront, we face the storm to continue our passion, the word no, often sounds like an encouragent to us, once money finds its way in, it is over, the heart dies.
Too bad, but too true.

We are, after all, true Celts.p:

You mean you can google translate it to Chinese, directly? p:

solid copper 30. July 2009, 21:37

I won't bother with that. I am too lazy.

daxonmacs 30. July 2009, 21:43

I know.

StevenV 1. August 2009, 14:33

 Belgium has lots of cool artists!

solid copper 6. August 2009, 12:28

But they all seem kind of goofy. :right:
