Tried Takoyaki for the first time

, , ,

I tried Takoyaki for the first time eight days ago at Chinatown night market. It is Japanese octopus dumpling balls. Here they were made by Chinese of course. I tried the seaweed flavour. It was okay.

I never had Takoyaki and never even heard of it. I'm a blank sheet when it comes to Japanese food.
I did have calamares before, but I didn't care for it much.

It is very soft. Too much flour and too small a bit of chewy seafood. Without the rich flavourish stuff poured on top of it, it is nothing. One box is enough for the stomach.

It's the tentacles, right? Well it is for calamares and that too is chewy, and without much flavour. Much talk about it, so I tried it, but I'm not particularly fond of it.

Hehe, I just expanded my comment. I will not buy it again. Yes, much talk about it. Just some gimmick I think. It is the way it is made that seems fun. The ball may look big but no substance.

Thank you. Forewarned is forearmed.

I stay away from mysterious seafood in general. :D

No wonder you are itchy now and then, aside from the itch from berry picking.

studio41 10. September 2009, 07:01

what could that possibly mean?! I do get itchy from too much Starbucks, though... gotta watch that, the decaff, especially

solid copper 12. September 2009, 06:11

I bet you did. How is your mother?

Tabmartel 12. September 2009, 11:43

I have had octopus and it was also ok however I love calamari but it has to be cooked properly for me.

The last time I had calamari it was horribly burned (no for once someone besides me burned my food p:)

Well, yes ... metaphor aside, it does sound like an allergy.

Takoyaki was very popular when I lived in Japan years ago, and I enjoyed it very much. The takoyaki shops are open very late at night there, providing a kind of fast food you can buy conveniently on the way home to enjoy hot and fresh out of the bag. I'm sure the preparation and ingredients are very important to produce tasty takoyaki. I see in your photo they are not using the cast iron baking molds like the shops in Japan. Similar to your experience, I recently had some local takoyaki that just didn't measure up to my recollection of the authentic item.

Ah, nice to know that it could be real good.
