Like A Teapot

"Enlightened or not, it is all the very same. Have a cup of tea! "

I am dry leaves

You Are Dry Leaves

You love to feel thoughtful and aware. You notice life's subtleties.
For you, fall is a pensive and quiet time. You like to look at the changes happening around you and reflect on them.

You like that fall is a more serious time of the year. People are back at school and work.
After a light hearted summer you're ready for some depth. Even the movies and books are more profound in the fall.

I'm a pumpkin pie baking in the oven. :left:
edit: took the test again and I am now something else, I overlooked the long walks, on my cell phone. Does that even sound right? :left:

I almost bought one on Sunday night but decided to stick with coconut cream pie in the end. I really wished I could have a sample first. The banana pie that I got a week before proved to be too bland as I had imagined. Must learn how to bake pies later.

daxonmacs 6. October 2009, 11:28

I'll stick with pumpkin soup, instead.
Cakes I can bake but I never tried baking a pie myself either.
I should though, now that I got a decent oven.

solid copper 6. October 2009, 11:35

Never tried western pumpkin soup. It is much different from the Chinese ones which have the pumpkin in chunks.

daxonmacs 6. October 2009, 12:14

All - pumpkin, potato, carrots etc. - is blended into a homogeneous orange pulpy soup, here.

solid copper 6. October 2009, 12:47

I should buy some pumpkin soon, since they are more available near Halloween. It is very beneficial to the body.

daxonmacs 6. October 2009, 13:38

Yes it's the season for pumpkin now. Good food with a lot of possibilities.

It turns out that I am dry leaves, too.

If you buy the ready-made pie crusts (either frozen in a shell or soft and rolled up), it is easy to make pies. I have even made apple crumb pie in the microwave -- the only tricky part is that the apples cook down so much that you have to start with way more apples than you might think you need.

I am very fond of pumpkin pie; I really enjoy the spices (and it must have whipped cream!). However as a woman in her fifties, I am always struggling with my weight. One of the nice things about pumpkin pie is that the crust-less version turns out very well, but to tell the truth it is essentially a pie-shaped pumpkin custard at this point. Anyways leaving off the crust makes for a lower calorie version. It's also possible to replace the sugar with Splenda/sucralose for even further calorie reduction. Some of my friends claim they can taste the difference between sugar and Splenda though, and others seem to be against artificial sweeteners in principle.

der Wandersmann 6. October 2009, 15:18

Sugar vs. Splenda: Speaking as a diabetic, I find Splenda to be less than useless. I've tried it more than once, but find that it sweetens only on the first taste; after that, the nerve receptors are "saturated" and no sweetness is perceptible. I also find that any sweetness produced by anything but sugar is unsatisfying ... "It's just not the same", says a diabetic friend, and I must agree. The craving, if I may call it that, is produced by the body which needs carbohydrates in the cells. It recognises the difference, and rejects the substitute. The only remedy is a small amount of sucrose, followed immediately by protein and complex carbs, (This is the description of the condition known as "bottoming out" by diabetics, or hypoglycemia, as the doctors name it, where SUDDENLY, one is in acute need of glucose ... trembling, and sweats, elevated heart rate, etc. ... not to be confused with orgasm; the latter is pleasant.)

So ... the answer for a diabetic is too eat properly and keep track of these things, and if you're like me, you save up your carb allowance for something like a nice beer, or perhaps a bit of chocolate. And keep plenty of whisky about, in case the carb load gets too high. It has other uses, too, but for a diabetic, the prime consideration is the blood-glucose.

Deb Platt 6. October 2009, 15:54

@derWandersmann My mom had type 2 diabetes, but I've been lucky so far and haven't developed it. But I do have elevated cholesterol and carry my weight high; those things tend to accompany diabetes. Hope you are doing well at keeping your blood-sugar under control. It can be very challenging.

One of my friends also tells me he can distinguish sugar from Splenda, but I can't. I use it routinely in tea and coffee (I'm trying to develop a taste for coffee at this late point in my life). And once in a blue moon I'll put it in smoothies or make a dessert with it.

daxonmacs 6. October 2009, 16:26

Sounds like you lead a very disciplined life, dW.
I usually don't like the surrogates, for other reasons.
Splenda is not on the market here, but amalgame and the likes are.

I like pumpkin spice cookies, I like stomping through piles of dry leaves, I like the smell of wood fires in October, I like seeing flocks of Canada geese heading south. This is my time of year too!

Oh, if only our Canada geese knew enough to migrate...

Ah ... the people in your locality make them too welcome, do they? Same here ... I'm beginning to think they ought to shoot them ... supply meat for food pantries and eliminate a health hazard.

It makes a person grateful to have ice covering local ponds from December to April! :D
