Midnight wings

, ,

Last night, after a five-hour sleep before midnight, with dreams and all, I did wee hours cooking again. This time I tried to perfect a new way of preparing chicken wings. It's some East-West fusion in style.

I love chicken wings. I crave for them every now and then. Because I need them so often, I also need them in many different flavours. Luckily, I have inherited some cookery genes from my late father, who was a professor by trade but is known for his culinary skills and ability to cook up meals for departmental faculty gatherings. In addition, I have good memory and natural instincts that I trust and use. So I can easily spend a few dollars on raw material and quickly cook up a delicious dish in my own kitchen, without relying on any cookbook. I only need to decide which flavour I want at a particular time. The other day, I did a quick mental count and found myself able to come up with at least a dozen flavours of wings. They are all basically Chinese or oriental styles. Well, China is a big, diverse country.

Dinner at a Thai restaurant

,

I had dinner at a Thai restaurant tonight. It situates near the driving entrance to a very common and busy ground level shopping plaza, in between an old fashioned fish and chip joint and a major American chain grocery store.

I have always wanted to check it out, as I like Thai food very much and it is the only Thai place around. But it looks dark and sinister from outside. It seems tiny, too.

I do not visit the shopping plaza often, as parking is crazy there and I do not like the brand of milk sold at the grocery store. But every time I did stop by, I stepped out of my car resolved to check out that dark place some day.

It actually has a bright yellow sign up across the large dark glass front wall, telling the world that Thai cuisine is served inside. Since yellow is in the family of my favourite colours, it catches my attention from afar. Well, it brightens my mood and, combined with the mysterious dark exterior, stimulates my taste bud as well as curiosity. It beckons me.

Mid-autumn festival

, ,

Today is Mid-Autumn Festival. It is celebrated by people of Chinese decent all over the world. It is August 15 on the Chinese lunar calendar, a date for family union and celebration of autumn harvest. The moon is supposed to be the brightest and fullest.

I did look up at the sky from my car at 8:45 PM and found a very bright full moon. This gave me much satisfaction, because, in the past few years, when I did remember to look, I never had such luck. It was either overcast or raining. I did not get myself any mooncake this year, though. I think they are over-packaged and ridiculously over-priced. They are too rich and too big a burden for my stomach, anyway.

An alternative to Qingdao Beer

For those who do not know, on the right is a good alternative to the famous Qingdao beer. It is specially developed for women and others who want a good beer but cannot afford to be alcohol-impared. It tastes wonderful and is an official sponsor of the Beijing Olympic Game.
