Dinner at Thai Garden

,

This is the most authentic Thai restaurant in the area. I read about it and had wanted to try it for sometime. I could not find it initially knowing only the street name, forgetting that it is a long street and without memorizing the restaurant name. But then I got to hear about how good it is again on my way when I stopped to ask around about it. It was a long trip, but it turns out to be worthwhile.

Adding orange to gray

,

What best can you do on a depressive gray October day in west coast Canada? Buy a live crab, stir-fry it with ginger and green onion, and have a feast.

Both dungeness crabs and wild chum salmons are cheap in October, but I prefer crab anytime.

A quick snack

,

Stir-fried oysters with ginger and green onion. A little salt, white pepper, sugar, and white wine does the trick. The oysters are a dozen a jar for $5.99 CND (sale price). I used six in this dish, saving the rest for later.

Tried Belgian Waffle

,

Saturday morning I got up early but the weather was terrible. I decided to brighten up my day by trying Belgian waffle for the first time. Luckily when I was ready to get out the sky had cleared up a bit.

Joie de vivre

I have found the perfect solution to my pizza quest. I love pizza but the normal size ones on the market always presents a dilemma. They are too big and too expensive. Leftover pizza does not taste good either. It is for this reason that I never order pizza for delivery. This Deep Dish brand, which I found in Costco on Thursday, solves my problem. There are twelve pieces in a box and it is about $1 a piece. They are of the perfect size and are most delicious.

To balance out, in case the cheesy pizza causes me difficulty on the throne, I have these items handy: oranges from South Africa, organic Romaine lettuce hearts from USA, and English white tea with blackcurrant; all of which obtained with a fairly good price while they were on sale in two other stores. That tea is currently my favourite and I alternate it with white tea with passion fruit of the same brand.

Tried Takoyaki for the first time

, , ,

I tried Takoyaki for the first time eight days ago at Chinatown night market. It is Japanese octopus dumpling balls. Here they were made by Chinese of course. I tried the seaweed flavour. It was okay.

A third Vietnamese noodle house

,

This is a third Vietnamese noodle house in the area. An older, busy one. Currently my second choice. Normally it is full. It does not look very busy here because it was late and it had been raining all day. They have a better menu for rice and noodle plates but I find their noodle soup sometimes not hot enough.

Unagi Rolls for $3.95

,

I had unusually big Unagi (roasted eel) rolls on Sunday night, preferential treatment I think. They shouted "Hello" upon hearing the doorbell before seeing me. It made me feel so good that I gave them a smiling nod when walking past them. The dish cost $3.95 before tax. The pieces are larger, richer, and tastier than usual. It made me very happy and contemplate on the power of a smile.

Taking care of both ends

I have not been to my old favourite Vietnamese noodle house for a while, because the last couple of times I was there I found the service less good and their soup less tasty than when I first found them over two years ago. I went there again on Monday night because I was visiting the grocer next door and they do have a better price. I was disappointed again. They tried to cheat me out of lemon grass for my beef noodle soup and the soup lacked the usual flavour. Yet they were willing to spend money on a clean bun technology in the toilet. I was surprised at their deeds and suspected change of ownership. My suspicion was confirmed when I paid the bill. They said that happened a year and a half ago. Well, that explains everything. I will not visit them again, despite the heart-warming, bun-protecting technology they invest in. I will stick with another popular (busy) older noodle house and the new, more expensive one that I found last month.

A New Vietnamese Restaurant

,

I tried out a new Vietnamese noodle house last Thursday in a neighbouring town where I conduct most of my business. Oh my god their beef noodle soup is so good! When I first sat down and examined the menu, I was not too happy. I was expecting a better price considering the existence of two competitors nearby and was also disappointed that they only offer two sizes for the beef noodle soup, regular and large. Their regular charges more than others' small or medium, almost one dollar more after tax. But when the food arrived, I realized that I should not complain - the quality of their food is better, the soup clear and very tasty. I liked the taste so much that I drank up all the soup, even though I was already very full. I nearly went back the next day and ended up revisiting on Saturday.
