A strange feeling

I got news today that my overbearing grandfather passed away yesterday, after a stroke on Saturday. I did not feel much, except for the imaginable impact of the event on my mother. My own father passed away ten years ago and it was quite a shock for me even though he had been ill for quite some time. So I can imagine what it is like with my mother although her memory would be very different. I find my thoughts keep turning to my grandmother, who though only a housewife was wise and fair. She is the only person on that side of the family who has truly loved me. She passed away some years ago unfortunately. My paternal grandfather who would have loved me more also passed away too soon. I never saw my paternal grandmother; she died in WWII during Japanese invasion of Hong Kong.

My two recent purchases

,

I recently made two purchases that make me very happy: Bose computer speakers and a pot of Christmas Cacti. The speakers provide very satisfactory high-quality sound that I had desired for over a year now. I got it with Thanksgiving gift money from family. The flowers was a spontaneous purchase on Monday, a cold rainy day. That day, on my way home after evening yoga class, I stopped by Safeway the grocery store to find a variety of flowers put on sale, most probably due to the lack of customers under poor weather and the misgiving over short life-span of flowers in a heated enclosed environment. I had always wanted a green plant or a small pot of flowery plant for indoors but never could make up my mind. That night the price for the Christmas Cacti was reduced to four bucks from six. Since it was so very pretty and affordable, I instantly decided to bring one home. There were two colours to choose. I chose orange over deep pink.

Adding orange to gray

What best can you do on a depressive gray October day in west coast Canada? Buy a live crab, stir-fry it with ginger and green onion, and have a feast.

Both dungeness crabs and wild chum salmons are cheap in October, but I prefer crab anytime.

The unbearable grayness of being

Last evening when I was preparing to go to bed, I heard a sudden dripping noise in the bathroom. I found it strange as it had been a while since I last showered. Then to my horror I saw the dripping coming from the ceiling, directly into my bathtub.

Visiting Burrard Inlet

, ,

I visited a part of Vancouver's Burrard Inlet yesterday. Got a fantastic story to tell. I was so excited when it happened that I nearly turned myself inside out (got to love that expression). But I cannot tell it now because I am too tired and have not edited the photos that provide the setting to the story. I have, however, uploaded a new photo album of seasides and animals. It will be continuously updated.

In the mood for love

, ,

Well, I did see a full moon. It was freezing out there when I tried to snap a picture of it. I shot this one outside a shopping mall. There was too much light on the parking lot. I later attempted a few more times but clouds had surged to embrace the moon.

For the moon festival, I made a trip to the Chinese stores. I remember how my father used to prepare for the occasion when he was around, even though we would not exchange words for the whole day or the days before and after. He just cooked a sumptuous dinner and laid the various traditional snacks (mainly fruits, with symbolism) around. Sometimes I was amazed and wondered why he even bothered, since he was so cold and mainly kept to himself. Tonight I did not fetch all the traditional food items, but I felt the need to treat myself. And I did. I know my late father would like me to do that.

Stuck In Traffic

,

I went to see a friend and got stuck in traffic for a good twenty minutes. Well, mid-autumn festival today. Hopefully get to see a full moon. Going to check on moon cakes in Chinese supermarket now.

Life Track

I have come this far
And am still steadfast
The past is behind me
The future is not bleak

Though I carry scars
And am burdened by memories
I am glad to be still alive
And still march like an intrepid

Tried the new Canada Line

, ,

Thanks to the bidding for the 2010 Winter Olympic Game, Vancouver now has a new train line in its public transit system. It is called Canada Line and it connects Vancouver downtown to Vancouver International Airport. The train runs mostly underground, unlike the skytrains that we already have which connect the central parts of Metro Vancouver, running mostly far above ground. I tried the new line on Tuesday and was quite pleased with it. It is no big deal compared to the world's many cities' subway services, but it is clearly a big deal for Vancouver. First, it is long overdue; second, the new train is more comfortable than the existing skytrains. It is more stable and the directions at the stations are simple and clear.

Early nightfall

For days, I failed at my attempt to take a walk in the city's outskirt before sunset. By the time I got out, night had fallen and the only thing interesting was the sky. But I was invariably in the car when I could have a clear view of it. Yesterday at a parking lot I saw what the Chinese call a "fish scales sky".

The Superstore in the first picture is a great Canadian chain that beats the American chains Safeway and SaveOn in prices and variety. Its own brand is good, too. The flags on rooftop are the national and provincial flags. The Japanese restaurant in the second picture is the one I went to and blogged about earlier.
