Music at water's edge

, , ,

This afternoon, on my after-rain lake checkup, I discovered a music festival being held at lake shores!

First I was surprised to see no parking spot on the street which should be relatively empty on weekends. I had to turn into the paid parking lot by the lake which I never used before. It was then when I discovered tons of people around the lake. I looked at the faces closely to see if it was a senior citizens' weekend event. But they were people of all ages.

I asked a woman what was going on and she told me music was to be played on the lake. I immediately thought of a similar event on the Thames in London and mentioned it. She said she had heard about it.

There seemed to be a delay, possibly due to the rain, because for a while nothing was going on and people were patiently waiting. It did not matter to me since I was busy photographing. Besides the event, I was also interested in the colours of the mountains after rain, which was what I came for.

While I was busy with my camera, the music started. It was nice but a bit too short. A small-scale event, nothing like what happened on the Thames. It is a little disappointing, but as a community cultural event, there was nothing to complain about. What happened was twelve trombonists, including Cuban jazz icon Bobby Carcasses and the world music trio Vocomotion, were placed at corners of the lake interpreting R. Murray Schafer's Music for Wilderness Lake. The music was supposed to work in harmony with the environment. An excellent concept!

Celtic performances

, ,

Celtic stage performance is really not my thing. The group Celtic Woman has some nice songs but I don't like to watch them perform. Many of the tunes are similar, just like the looks of three or four of these women. Their excessive facial expressions put me off after a while. They are on TV a lot somehow.

There existed some very beautiful Celtic folk songs, but they got lost over the years and cannot be reproduced, just like some of the very beautiful Walsh folk songs.

I hope Celtic culture lasts forever. I just cannot stand repetitious sounds and movements.

My friend Daxonmacs says that this song of Rolling Stones, which he aptly calls the most beautiful cry ever, is played frequently at this time of the year in Belgium's shopping centers. I wonder why. Because it is a classic and it is played among other classics? Here, where I live, they cannot wait to play the boring Christmas carols, again and again.

I agree that this is a very beautiful song. I was deeply touched by it the first time I heard it. When it or the Rolling Stones first became popular, I was not around to hear it. The next decades I was in a different part of the world, listening to and busy with very different things.

This song has played a vital role in my life, too; enabling me to soften my heart to forgive someone.

Finally

It has been a turbulent few weeks. The Olympic game served as a big distraction. The sticky hot weather seems to have passed for the year. I am sleeping more regularly, feeling better, and looking better. I cut my own hair again and it looks better than before. I am taking Chinese medicine for my stomach problem and it has started working. Should have cut my hair and started the medicine sooner.

I finally embedded the Olympic theme song to the pertinent post. Sorry it took that long. I know people from different parts of the world revisited my lyric page for the song because I said I would try to upload it later. First it took nearly two weeks for my brother to pass along the music file. Then I had trouble uploading it to my opera files. Then the code given to me by a trusted friend did not work. I had to do my own research and use a different set of code found on the Internet.

You And Me - Beijing Olympic theme song

You and Me / From one world / We are family
Travel dream / A thousand miles / Meeting in Beijing
Come together / Put your hand in mine
You and Me / From one world / We are family

我和你,心连心,同住地球村,
为梦想,千里行,相会在北京。
来吧!朋友,伸出你的手,
我和你,心连心,永远一家人。

Shout, shout, shout

Currently, this is one of the great albums for me to help release the emotions caused by the stupidity in the mass media regarding China, Tibet, and the 2008 Olympics.

I know the cover is a bit scary and may, unfortunately, cause the album to be under-estimated. But it is really wonderful music. If you like real classic solid rock of the '80s, you would love what this band of New England has churned out. This is their second album since 2006 when they released their first one. They are no new kids in the musical scene although the band is fairly new.

I very much enjoy it. Its opening track "Eye" is almost as exciting as "The Final Countdown" or "California Dreamin'". It really helps release frustration and makes you want to shout along even if you are quite happy.

Spellbound

I have never written on musical topics two days in a roll, until now. What's the urgency? Well, for one thing, I want my brother to know what I have found, assuming he is reading, since he seems to be so into music; for another, this is great music from a talented Canadian aritist and a unique individual which I want to promote.

This must be k.d. lang's best album so far, which, judging from the emotional content, seems only possible after the arrival of her middle-age. I immediately fell in love with it and believe most of the world will.

Some weeks ago, I saw her interview on the CBC. She was utterly cool. Efficient and business like. At the time, I felt she could have shown a bit more grace. But that's just her style. She appeared to be there just for a task - to answer questions. The answers were short and matter-of-factly, the conversation not very engaging. But then when they showed a bit of her singing on the big screen, I was immediately captured by her - her music and her personality. The melodies are refreshing and ballad like, the lyrics candid and intelligent, and her voice clear and intimate.

Of the eleven songs in the new collection, I very much like "Coming Home", "Shadow and the Frame", "Flame of the Uninspired", and "Je fais la ponche". They are just beautiful. Listening to them, you would think "what a talented and sensual woman" and forget about her masculine interview persona.

It is my heart you have got

There's not a lot of contemporary pop music that I'm crazy about. But since last night I've been yearning for immediate possession of this fine album by Okay. Even the title Huggable Dust is amazingly cool.

I find myself playing its first track "My", which I downloaded for free, again and again. I have sampled all of the 18 songs in the album and feel a strong urge to pay and download them all. This is great music for quirky people like myself. If you consider yourself a bit off, I am sure you would like it as well. It also has remarkable lyrics that touch the soul. The whole thing is painfully good. It gets my chest heaving.

Why can't I have you

,

oh baby, just one more time to touch you
just one more time to tell you
i'm not so blind
baby, why can't i have you
it's breaking my heart in two
you know what i'm going through

I can't find my freaking glasses again, which I knew were near my bed. I just used them last night to watch the TV show America's Next Top Model. I am playing The Cars Complete Greatest Hits to warm up for another search attempt. It is perfect for finding glasses or remote control. All that tension and frustration, it needs an outlet.
