Run Away To Sea

Fed up with politics? Start your own country at sea, living in your own utopia with its own laws, customs and peculiarities. Sure, it's been tried before with varying degrees of success, but now the nonprofit Seasteading Institute says such a platform can be built safely, and at reasonable cost.

This 160,000 square foot deck, held together by super-strong carbon-fiber cables, was created by offshore oil rig designer Marine Innovation & Technology. It's supported by floating, stabilizing pillars to minimize the effects of huge ocean waves, powered by an auxiliary diesel generator (where are the wind turbines and wave generators?) that can move it along at 2 knots, and includes a desalinization plant for all your water needs.

The 20,000-ton platform is expected to cost $50 million. Hey, that's only $10 million more than the penthouse on the Chicago Spire, the world's tallest apartment building. Get together a gang of a hundred of your closest friends, and this mini-continent will only cost you $500K apiece. Let's go — we'll call it
OPERAland.
