Shots from Ballyreen near Blackhead in Co.Clare, Ireland 7/2/08. A beautiful rugged piece of coastline that despite its wildness sets my mind at ease.

Down Among The Stones

This Barony affordeth not a piece of timber sufficient to hang a man, water in any one place to drown a man, or earth enough in any part to bury him.

~ The Journal of Thomas Dineley, 1681 Limestone pavement Formed during the ice age when a glacier sliced away the soil, leaving these bare slabs of Limestone or clints exposed
Seperated by deep fissures in the rock called grikes
The Burren
This whole area is actualy in a large number of my photographs, it lies to the south of Galway in County Clare, and can be seen looking across Galwy Bay, and forms the backdrop of many shots of the sea that I have taken.
On first viewing the land it seems stark and barren, but this 100 square mile section of Ireland contains so much more than just rock. The plant life brings botanists from all over the world. Mediterranean plants grow next to Alpine and Arctic species. 75% of the species of plants in Ireland grow here in the Burren, I will upload photos of some of the ones I saw in the small area I covered (check back in a day or so).
I could go on about the biologists and the wild butterflies, mammals and birds. The Archiologists and the megalithic tombs, ring forts, Bronze Age cooking sites and holy wells. The geologists and the vast array of caves and underground streams. But I wont.
Let me just say its a place where you dont have to go far to feel compleatly alone in the world. Click for larger images
