Edirol have apparently upped the ante in the dry cell-powered palm recording studio sweepstakes with their new R-09, a 24-bit WAV (44.1kHZ or 48kHz linear PCM)/MP3 (up to 320kbps) field unit that comes with built-in stereo mics. Storage is on SD card and data transfer is via USB 2.0. MSRP is a steep US$450. Ouch! More

Edirol's new R-09 portable recorder is creating quite a buzz among audio nuts on music-gear chatlines. With inbuilt stereo mics, SD cards for recording, 24-bit WAV capability, and rechargeable batteries that can be replaced, the iPod-sized device could be the niftiest tool for field recordings, especially in way-out places where you can lug too much stuff.
