An average girl's perspective

Back home

Back home after a nice 3,5 week holiday in the south of England. Lots of things to do there, although the weather was a bit to cold to call it real summer. Picking up work from of today and hoping to post more regularly than I did in the last two months.

Happy 4th of July

To all American friends: happy fourth of July. Enjoy the traditional gatherings, food and fireworks. I only have been there once, in 1976 in the heart of the MidWest and I remember going to the fair, competing in the home baked cake competition and having a lot of fun with my guest family in Holland Michigan.

Barbecuing in the rain

It seemed like such a good idea to have the family around the house and enjoy a barbecue party. It should be dry on Saturday according to the weather forecast. But then there is always our Dutch weather with it’s nasty tricks. :irked: So, although we could sit outside parts of the afternoon, every time it started raining and did we have to find shelter in the house.
:chef: So no barbecuing at the lawn, but HK and his brother using the cover of the garage to get the meat ready, bringing it in to the kitchen, where we kept it in the oven until the other things were done. The food was good though and the atmosphere too. My sister even thought she enjoyed it more this way, because she could eat the meat together with the salads, rice and potatoes instead of stuffing up while waiting until the meat was ready…
The day ended with watching TV for Life 8 and we saw among a lot of crap, a great Robbie Williams (that guy really knows how to play his audience) and the rock legends The Who and Pink Floyd. Hope it will influence and inspire our world leaders to make a generous gesture to relief poverty.
:sing: :sing:

Unexpected pleasure

Yesterday it was HK’s birthday, although the guests are coming to celebrate today. So the three of us went out for dinner in Deventer, the city next to our village. It has a very old centre of town with a square called ‘De Brink’, surrounded by shops and a choice of restaurants and cafés. We picked a restaurant with a mixed European kitchen called ‘De kokkel en het zwijn’ (the cockle and the pig) with a terrace on the Brink.

We had a very nice three course meal and the temperature was reasonable, at least after a glass of wine . During the meal the festival program ‘Deventer on stilts’ started at the square. It turned out there were all kind of Dutch and foreign groups of walkers on stilts were performing. They were dressed up as mythical figures like yeti’s and dragons, animals (very cute kangaroos that could really jump on there stilts) and a couple of medieval theatre groups from Spain. They moved around the square entertaining the crowds. BK followed them with great attention, as were lots of children, young and older…

Nerve wrecking days

The past few days were nerve wrecking because work and income were both at stake. The company my partner works for is in rough waters at the moment and they are downsizing in two steps. The first round was in February, the second round in June. In Holland usually the principle of last in first out is used to determine who has to leave. In this case every professional group was subject to this “lifo principle”. Since my partner was the last one in (although 15 years ago!!) as work and safety professional, we were expecting that he would be laid off. But today we heard, HOORAY, no such thing happened. He can stay and that’s a HUGE relief I can tell. :sing:

Meanwhile I was unexpectedly offered a four day job at the Netherlands Center of Occupational Diseases where I already work as editor/webmaster. It is a challenging job in the field of knowledge management: gathering, developing and disseminating knowledge on occupational diseases. It was totally flattering that my colleagues proposed to ask me for that position, so I know they trust I can do the job. Had a thorough discussion about it at home first, because I’ll be gone to Amsterdam three days a week, work one day home. My daughter didn’t like that too much, but on the other hand she realized she will be at school most of the time. Altogether it will be a big difference starting somewhere in September, but I accepted it with pleasure and hope I’ll make it work.

So time to celebrate tonight and in the weekend, as it is HK’s birthday tomorrow and most of the next of kin are coming. Barbecue probably. Now I’m going to plant some of the flowering plants I bought this afternoon, to brighten up the front garden a little.

Little princess

A little princess was born yesterday, second daughter of the Dutch crown prince Willem Alexander and his wife Maxima and sister of Amalia. Tomorrow we will find out her name. She is third in the row to the throne, after her father and her older sister. Hope she will have a good life away from the spotlights.

Her name was announced yesterday as Alexia Juliana Marcela Laurentien, named after the father, grandmother and two aunts

Dutch TT revisited

http://images.google.nl/images?q=tbn:nA756g_5azgJ:www.mcheerjansdam.nl/log/images This weekend we celebrated my dads birthday at my parents home in Assen. After some thunderstorms it was much cooler, which was a relief. Assen is the town I grew up and spend 18 years. It’s in the north of Holland and only famous for its annual international motorcycle race, the Dutch TT, which always coincides with my dads birthday.

So although I don’t watch this sport at any time during the year, I always follow it with one eye with this race. Each year it’s a big festive event in Assen with a lot of bands performing, motor trials, people watching the qualification training sessions and a big fair. On the night before the race – Friday night – there are all kind of parties in town to entertain the crowd. About 100.000 – 120.000 people come to see the race each year, a lot of them by motor bike. When I was young there used to be riots, vandalism and small fires in town during the ‘Night of Assen’, but now it’s usually more peaceful. http://images.google.nl/images?q=tbn:QXWFfUp6o1UJ:www.madbikers.net/sbk/ASSEN

To avoid the traffic we came to Assen in the middle of the day and left late on Saturday night. No problems then. We had a nice and quiet day, watching the Dutch soccer team under 20 loose the quarter final of the World Championships and preparing my dad for his new computer.

Flowering garden

http://www.morethanone.nl/images/2005/garden1.jpg

Finally took some time to photograph a couple of flowers blooming in the garden.

http://www.morethanone.nl/images/2005/garden2.jpg

Especially those in pots are doing great at the moment, but I think that the little heat wave we are currently having helps even grow the Californian poppies. Hope they will bloom soon too.

It's really summer out here now.

Midsummer :star:

Today summer came at 8.46 am and the sun will be out for 16 hours and 45 minutes. Fortunately it’s not as hot as it was yesterday. More wind and some clouds. It was even bearable to sit outside for a while.

After one year at high school the summer vacation is dawning for BK. Next week the last series of big tests and this week finishing of all kinds of school projects. So I think this girl is really busy for the first time this year . Must say she is doing great, zealous working on the computer these days. Not too much TV, surfing, gaming and MSN going on as far as I can see. :sst:

Finished the second part of the ‘French assignment’ and I am glad they seemed pleased with the products I picked and the popular description sentences I made up. Unexpected problem was that I have to test the deep links to the resellers websites after removing the cookies from my computer: I had to log in manually in a pile of my own preferred sites again. Had a nice e-mail exchange with SS, the French project leader about work and other stuff that keeps us busy.

Yesterday they published a book on Dutch Bat, called Memories on Srebrenica – 171 talks with soldiers ("Herinneringen aan Srebrenica - 171 soldatengesprekken"). The soldiers were in Srebrenica in former Yugoslavia to protect the Muslim people, but were crushed by general Mladic in 1995. Ten years later it turns out that 40 percent of them have psychological and psychiatric problems, 10 percent suffers from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Apart from the terrible things that happened to the people of Srebrenica I think it’s an amazingly high percentage, considering it was supposed to be a peacekeeping operation. Wonder if any of these problems is reported as occupational disease.

Tropical temperatures now

 It’s always to the extremes here. Last weekend around 12ºC (53ºF) and this weekend around 30ºC (86ºF) and today 33ºC (91ºF). This afternoon it’s hardly possible to work upstairs behind the sunscreen, so I moved to the cooler kitchen with the laptop. Still busy, but I consider my little health problems from last week as a warning to take it a little easy every now and then.

The weekend was filled with barbecue and reading outside. HK’s mom had her 81th birthday in the open and was pleased with her presents (which is not self-evident!). We brought her a very small and easy Radio-CD-player (‘sound blaster model’) and two audio books from Dutch literature. She likes reading, but gets tired by it lately. She’ll need some more instruction I guess, but I don’t doubt she is going to try it some day. The barbecue was great in different ways (lots of fun, nice food and far to much to eat it all). The kids performed with children’s songs, making a lot of lively noise and the weather was sunny and not too hot. :coffee:

On Sunday there was so much meat left, that we turned the barbecue on again in our own garden and had our own little garden party. It stayed light until almost 11 pm, being almost the longest day, so we could sit outside for hours reading and sprinkle the garden. Didn’t envy all the people that went to the beaches and ended up in a traffic jam, since the trains around Amsterdam didn’t go either.

No trip to Amsterdam tomorrow, since they are supposed to move to another building this week. Work at home, probably doing a lot about the anniversary book.

Saw a creepy movie on DVD yesterday: The Forgotten (2004), the story is kind of incredible, but the scary special effects are great and I like the acting by Julianne Moore.

Mountain lion in a flat country

Far to busy with work to write long entries. Have to be careful and not get hand, arm, neck problems typing and ‘mousing’ too much. The weather is much nicer since last Tuesday, so we can sit outside and even prepare a barbecue party for HK’s mum 81th birthday on Saturday. Hope to feel a bit better by then, because I caught a nasty cold with headache, cough and a stuffed nose.

Spend my evenings very lazy, watching some of the soccer world championships under 20 which take place in Holland. The Dutch team is unexpectedly good and play attractive. Very interesting to see ‘Dutch’ guys that actually come from 7 different countries (Suriname, Ghana, Bosnia etc.) play as a real team, advertising the multicultural spirit at its best.
Got Sex and the City episodes on DVD: I never saw it before and like it very much!

http://www.nu.nl/img.db?545889+s(350!x223!)

Lots of Dutch and European political problems going on and a interesting hunt for a mountain lion in the centre part of the country, called Veluwe (woods, moors). The ‘poema’ as it is called in Dutch is sighted a few times since last week and they try to catch it alive. Not many people understand how dangerous this animal can be if it gets hungry or feels trapped. So big wild life in Holland.

Have to go down not and check on BK’s homework. She has a test tomorrow on Dutch spelling and needs some more rehearsing.

Warmer weather to come :)

Another day of hard work done and my to do list is only getting longer. I started grabbing hardware information for the French project, but today I got another e-mail about changed plans. Fortunately the deadlines are sliding back into July. It’s really the worst organized project I ever participated in, but I don’t think I can blame the guy who is keeping me informed. He too is a handed over to the people at Microsoft, who keep changing their minds.

Watched two pretty good movies in the weekend: Seabiscuit which gives you a great insight in the life at the beginning of the 20th century and has great performances by Toby McGuire, Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper and the other one was the thriller from 2001: “Don’t say a word” with Michael Douglas and the Dutch actress Famke Janssen. Entertaining but not too scary.

The weather was very cold on Saturday and Sunday with temperatures round 12 °C (about 50F) and lots of showers with occasionally some sun. But they promise warmer weather from tomorrow, so it looks like the next weekend will be even ‘tropical’. I took a nice walk in the woods and today we mowed the lawn because it was at least dry. The Californian seeds are growing more or less slowly: I guess they think it’s still early spring here. Not much contact with the States, everybody seems very involved in their own things. Hope it will be temporarily though, because it’s nice to talk on the phone now and then.

Yesterday I saw the French journalist finally released fro Iraq after months in captivity. It was really amazing how well spirited she looked, not broken in any way. A real strong spirit!

Movie psychiatry

Saw the movie ‘Girl, interrupted’ yesterday, which I thought was interesting to watch and well acted by Winona Rider and Angelina Jolie, but I was amazing by the picture they painted of psychiatry. Maybe because it was situated in the sixties, but I still think it was odd to put this depressed girl with a possible borderline disorder (doubtfull!) in a closed ward for 18 months. She came out well adjusted to society standards, but I’m not sure she should stay happy that way. The antisocial personality disorder was well acted though! Great performance by Jolie.

Work and health (promotion)

Spend a lot of time editing the big yearly report for the Netherlands Center for Occupational Health. They publicize the numbers on the reported occupational diseases in our country in 2004 and comment on them with the aid of scientific research and publications in 2004 and the first part of 2005. It’s interesting stuff, because each year they find new relations between work and work circumstances and health. This years main points are raising problems with aggression and sexual harassment, new technologies like nano technology and the problems with dust with ultra small particles, problems with gas exposure in the OR in hospitals and people getting hearing problems because of noise from live sources (children yelling, pigs yelling etc.)

One of the points there is a lot of discussion about, is whether being obese can be seen as an occupational disease. Health promotion in companies is a hot item at the moment and a lot of people think employers should interfere with their employees health, not only by providing fitness opportunities and healthy food in the restaurant, but also by encouraging people to quit smoking, loose weight, get their health checked yearly etc. I think it all sounds very caring, but I’m in doubt whether the employer should intervene in people’s personal lifestyle as much as they are planning to do now. Curious what other people think about that.

Memories and work

Friday night with some candles and the oil lamp and vivid memories of Rob. It’s was not too sad this year, just quiet remembrance….

Quite a cold and rainy weekend after one nice summary day on Friday. Had to do a lot of working, so that was easier now, but it didn’t feel like days off. Finished the first part of my work for the French client, a bit out of the ordinary, finding hardware compatible with Windows for use in the kitchen. By having a broad perspective you can come up with a lot of things, funny. Next week more of that to come. I started my report on the conference and did the first day and I did some work for the medical website too. Another 4 – 6 weeks with a lot of work to come.

Super Size Me :eyes:

Watched the documentary on the experiment of eating 30 days 3 meals a day at McDonalds and you should not do that before dinner. It’s incredible how much food the guy had to eat to stick to his own rules, jeopardizing his health. :chef:
None of the 3 doctors that saw him before could predict the damage that was done to his liver: same effect as a lot of alcohol, just by accumulating fat there. One of the interesting things to me was the addictive effect of eating junk food. After three weeks he feels awful during the day, except when he starts eating again. Must have been a brain effect, but I didn’t know about that. For me no McDonalds for a while!!! :ko:

Light a candle

Tomorrow I will light a candle and a little oil lamp in remembrance of my brother…. It seems so short since he passed away, but it’s already two years. Memories are still vivid and this time of year even more since every date reminds me of the days in SF, hoping and fearing at his bedside.

No, no, no, no, no…….

You may have notice: the Dutch voted “No” on the European constitutional law. For a wide variety of reasons, that had mainly to do with the fast pace things are changing in Europe and the deeply felt aversion to the Dutch government. Despite the fact that all the people considering voting no where demonised and called crazy in the last couple of weeks, two third of the country made up their mind and said No, and I was one of them. :eyes:

Not because I don’t believe in the concept of Europe as a strong bond between nations, but because the Dutch perspective on a lot of things tends to loose impact. I think we don’t need to be one Europe including a constitution, a secretary of state, a hymn and for instance a European District Attorney telling us what crimes have to be persecuted.

<http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/06/01/dutch.poll/?section=cnn_world>

Now I hope they will take the French and the Dutch signal serious and slow down a bit. Think about things again, discuss them, listen to the people and proceed in another way….
:ko:

Totally absorbed in work

Long time back from the coast, where it was really hot, except on the moment it would have been nice (partying outside was not nice, because of the strong and cold wind). The conference was interesting, partly in English with guests from Norway, Finland, Germany and Scotland, but if you have to pay attention for two days it’s very tiring. My brochure was presented two the people that attended the conference and I got some nice reviews. Unfortunately they never said publicly that I wrote it. Vanity! :irked:

So I needed the weekend to recover, although I did some editing work on Saturday and Sunday. This week started with the Cnet project for Microsoft, which is totally different from what I do normally, but interesting for a while. Good contact with the French guy in charge of the project, he seemed positively surprised by the work I already did. Besides that two interviews and more editing work….. it is really working all day at the moment...

Off to the coast

Two days at the coast with summer weather prospected. Working my ass off at the conference. Hope the party will be as nice as last year....
