1. Martin guitar
2. A cheap but great sounding dobro
3. An Ernie Ball replica bass
4. A cajón (a flamenco box drum)
5. A tambourine
6. A harmonica, wrong key though
7. My trusty Akai MPC2000XL sampler
1. Shure SM58 microphone
2. iMac G5 with Logic Express
3. An old 8 track tascam cassette recorder, borrowed from Zac.
4. Leads all over the place
I am lacking a mic stand, next pay day should secure me one of these. I think that's pretty much all I need really. The original intention was to record the lot on the 8 track - the sound on it is superb and a little bit rough as it's so old and Zac has clearly caned it over the years - but this is pretty impractical when mixing sampled beats and live instruments. So it's all going into Logic.
I wanted to avoid using a sequencer so I shall try to use as few features as possible in Logic. I don't have a problem with sequenced music per se, much of the music I listen to at home is sequenced. I just don't like working that way, moving little boxes of sound around on screen, I want there to be an air of spontaniety to my recordings, and with sequencers everything is just so easy to edit, so thats what you do. Edit, edit, then edit some more. Unless you're making really slick stuff like Amon Tobin, it can really suck the life out of your music... But it certainly makes making intros into songs a darn-sight easier. Plus the biggest problem with the 8 track tascam is it's bass response is appalling. The tape on those little machines isn't very wide, and whilst the sound is lovely and warm and phat for the guitar and drums, the bass sounds weedy...
So far I have the beats ready in the Akai. Next step is to record the different patterms onto the Tascam to get that scratchy sound. Then bring it into Logic.
I also need to deaden the sound in my room. I had some carpet in my last place but we left that behind when we moved into our new place. Marble flooring makes recording a little difficult. Especially when you want a nice, close, echoless guitar. Might have to enlist the use of towels or something.
Oh, and I am giving myself a maximum of 1 day to record each track.
