Before the Meiji restoration, Ooita was the two provinces Buzen and Bungo. These provinces were largely divided among many daimyo, so a large castle town never formed.
Ooita prefecture is largely comprised of mountains, and narrow coastal plains. To the north is the main island of Honshū and to the west the island of Shikoku.
The total number of municipalities used to number 58, but from 2005, these cities merged to form only 18. It is therefore has the least number of municipalities for any prefecture in Kyuushuu, and the fourth least for all of Japan. The municipalities are divided as such: 14 cities, 3 districts, 3 towns and 1 village, it has the fewest towns and villages of any prefecture.
Ooita is known for its production of horse meat and the citrus fruit Kabosu. The horse meat is eaten cold and is soft.
Ooita’s tourism industry profits largely from nationally famous hotsprings, the most famous of which are those around the city of Beppu, which are known as the 地獄 jigoku (hells). Many can not actually be used for bathing, but are a visual attraction only.
There is an annual music festival in Beppu, and this city also hosts the Hihokan Sex Museum. Another annual music event is held at Ooita’s Mt. Hachimen, an international charity event called Concert at the Rock. The Sanrio theme park is located in Ooita prefecture.
The small city of Hita is host to the Sapporo Beer Factory.
As far as dialect goes, apparently there is a special way to form honorifics. In place of ~してください ~shite kudasai, it's ~されてください ~sarete kudasai.
