The Rainbow Effect

Excuse the vaguely Grisham-like header.

I noticed a trange thing when watching Dollhouse on DVD on our new plasma TV today. I haven't noticed it while watching Blu-ray movies or playing PS3 games, but with this DVD, I noticed a strange rainbow effect when I flickered my eyes across strong white highlighted areas. The colors varied, I kept seeing maily green and yellow, but also red and perhaps blue (not to sure about the blue). I could only see the rainbows while moving my eyes.

I've googled it and found some stuff about "green ghosting", but I don't think that's it. Does anyone else experience this?

My TV is a Samsung PS50B850 50" plasma, and the P3 shows DVDs at 50 or 60 Hz, can't remember. It wouldn't surprise me if the refresh rate had something to do with this rainbow effect.

More chocolate

, , , ...

I haven't been terribly active here the last weeks. I find myself twittering more than blogging, looking at this huge white text box makes me feel like I need to write something lengthy and profound.

Anyway.

Found two new chocolates today from Freia. Both milk, both filled. One filled with caramel and walnut, the other filled with raspberry and yoghurt. I was more excited by raspberry and yoghurt one, and for good reason. Caramel and walnut sounds great, but it turned out to be a bit too rich. The raspberry and yoghurt one on the other hand was pretty nice - not stellar, but certainly something I'm going to buy again.

Oh, and I see Blizzard have announced their new World of Warcraft expansion, titled Cataclysm. Looks pretty good actually, but not enough to lure me back in

Bergene melk

, , ,

Oooo, exiting! Nidar has launched a new milk chocolate on the Norwegian marked, using real vanilla extract for flavouring. A huge bonus! Sadly, the chocolate is slightly too sweet, even compared to Freia Melkesjokolade with similar ingredients. A little more cocoa, perhaps 40%, would go a long way in this case. Also, the mouth feel is a bit dry/grainy, perhaps indicating too little time spent on conching.

Overall it's a decent effort, and I'll probably keep buying it if for nothing else than to express my support for chocolate with real vanilla, but I'm a little disappointed.

Adding your favourite special characters to your keyboard

, ,

After some twittering today, I realised there are some special characters I'd like to have on my keyboard, like «, », ‘, ’, “ and ”. So I found Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator, which has a fairly descriptive name

A few minutes later (yes, it's very easy to use) I had my own keyboard layout, based on the standard Norwegian one. Here are my new AltGr-modified keys:

And here's the file, if you're interested.

The baby experience

It's been a while since I wrote an entry here. Being Johannes' father has been surprisingly uneventful so far. He eats, he sleeps, he lays around doing nothing, or he cries. When he cries, I try to soothe him, mainly by trying to make him burp. When he lies around doing nothing, I try to fool around a bit and make ugly faces at him, I talk to him, and generally try to make some sort of contact.

That, and the diaper thing, is basically all there is to it.

Some things I've learned:
  • Making sure the baby burps as many times as he needs to after a meal is of the utmost importance.
  • Sometimes, lying on the floor and just looking around is more fun than a hyperactive dad.
  • Cover your clothes before picking up a baby who's eaten cod liver oil and is aching to puke it all over you.

Opera Unite

, ,

I've had a few quick peeks at Opera Unite inbetween changing diapers and stuff, and made a small homepage on the webserver, which will be up when my computer is turned on:

It's not very useful at the moment, but who knows what time might bring

Enjoying the stroller

, ,

After doing some intense research online and IRL, we basically narrowed our search for a babystroller down to three models:
  • TFK Joggster Twist
  • OTH Urban Jungle
  • Bugaboo Cameleon

We decided we wanted a three wheeler, so the Bugaboo was out of the game. Mainly due to its bigger carrycot, the TFK (pictured on the right) ended up as the winner. We've just started trying it out, and so far we're really loving it. The three wheel design with rotating front wheel, coupled with the stroller's light weight and superb shock absorbing, makes for a very agile and enjoyable ride, both for the baby and for his parents. You can also lock down the front wheel for a more "old fashioned" ride experience, which some will probably prefer.

I'm heartily recommending this stroller to anyone!

A day, a life

,

Becoming a parent, the meaning of life? Insofar as there is a meaning, the answer would be yes, give or take a few decimal points.

Johannes was born four days ago, and it already feels like he's been around for much longer. Maybe it's an ancient instinct awakening, this just feels more right than I imagined it would when I first discovered my dear Kristin was pregnant. I had my doubts back then, but now... my son is here, he's mine, and we belong together.

Hva med stakkars meg da?

Seeing this video gave me a real flashback to the early nineties. I used to love SNoB and their laconic, laidback style. I think I even have the CD featuring this track lying around somewhere, but I haven't seen it in more than fifteen years! Weird.
