Forum Nokia launches Launchpad to Glob al developer community

Ben Wang, Head of developer programs at Forum Nokia gave me a quick intro to their latest offering yesterday - Launchpad. The program is designed exactly as it sounds, to help developers get up and running and launch their apps on a platform support by Nokia devices. Offered via the developer portal at Forum.Nokia, Launchpad is a new, affordable alternative for those who were restricted in some way from taking part in the Forum Nokia Pro developer program - recall FN Pro was quite costly and restricted to special invite only companies that have a relationship with Nokia. Launchpad is open to all and is affordable - about 800 Euros p/year (priced in Euro the program is accessible Globally). Member developers and companies will have early access to tools and SDKs, access to affordable devices for testing, etc... see more about the program at http://www.lbszone.com/content/view/2016/2/ or jump directly to www.forum.nokia.com/launchpad

Microsoft / Yahoo! merger commentary

This came my way today from Action Engine... While there are question marks as to whether the potential marriage between Microsoft and Yahoo will succeed, this partnership offers wireless device owners a lot to look forward to. There are strengths from each player in different areas: Microsoft has a robust mobile Operating System and Yahoo has had great success with their recent on-device applications (i.e.Yahoo! Go service). Combining all of this into one pot could cook up the perfect blend of capabilities for today’s wireless consumer. Yahoo's oneSearch service could make dramatic improvements to the MSN search offering. And Microsoft could also benefit from enhancing their MSN web offer to more closely resemble the usability enhancements found in the Yahoo! Go service." – Source: Anne Baker, vice president of marketing at Action Engine, a mobile on-device portal provider

first on the block with a swanky new UIQ smartphone - The P1

, , , ...

Here's the latest from Sony Ericsson if you want to make your friends (and the guy at the cell phone outlet) drool... enter the P1. Based on the UIQ form factor, this device sports a QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, WLAN and Voip, touchscreen display and loads more. If you aren't familiar with UIQ its an open platform that offers broad potential for multimedia applications from operators/carriers, content owners and third party developers and sits on the Symbian OS. My colleagur Richard wrote up a nice piece on the device after an interview with a key SE Exec. See http://www.symbianone.com/content/view/4490//

As expected - Nokia Siemens to Cut 9,00

No surprise here I guess.. what happens when you get one giant taking over another one?? Job cuts naturally... looks like the pink slips will be going out soon.. .this from Unstrung... The vendor has said all along that cuts of between 6,000 and 9,000 would be made during the next few years, a process that will help it achieve savings of €1.5 billion per year by the end of 2010. Now it's clear the reductions will be at the top end of that proposed range. Source: http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=123258&site=nxtcomm

Looking for an audience for your mobile app? Try the kids

How's this for a stat... 50 to 70 percent of 12- to 14-year olds have their own cell phones (in the US)... more important, this demographic is savvy, like to explore, and will consume data... definitely key in driving ARPU. So, if you have a mobile app think about the kids and target them... I'm still waiting for a fun, and clever mobile app that will integrate moblogging, friend sharing, photo AND vide capture, and maps, all in one SIMPLE to USE application. This is almost possible if I had a Nokia N95... but realistically, how many of us are in the market for yet another $600 cell phone?? Oh, speaking of phones.. if you happen to score a new N95 and are stuck on how to get the data and apps off your old phone and onto the new one then check out solutions from oxygen software.
