HOMEPAGE OF SAMSHER RAWAL

Playing Blackjack the Smart Way

Start with the essentials. Because the dealer has to hit on any hand 16 or lower, you will never win with less than 17 unless the dealer busts. Take a hit on any hand lower that 17 when the dealer shows ace, K, Q, J, 10, 9, or 8, cards that are not probable to make the dealer bust. Stand on any hand higher than 11 when the dealer shows a 4,5, or 6, cards that will then make dealer to bust more than 40 percent of the time.
Take insurance only when you have an intuitive feeling that the dealer has blackjack, or if you are card counting and know the cards remaining in the deck.

Tip#1-This is easy, and it's a no-brainer. Play tables that offer only a one deck game. Stay away from the multi-deck shoes as these give the house a huge advantage. Your winning percentage literally drops to about 30% edge, not a smart way to approach the game. The tables get turned, with the richer concentration of face cards, the house easily attains 17-21's almost 75% of the time. And with that richer concentration, the player attains more busts or 12-16 hands frequently. Stay away from these at all costs.

Tip#2-Keep the betting consistent. Don't waver your bets with every hand. To take advantage of a winning hand percentage, keep the bets close by within 5-10 dollars each time. When your pot is running low, don't make the emotional chase bets to try and make up the losses. Gain control of your play and keep it steady. Like most slot machines, blackjack offers a 96% payback to even. So when the action gets hot and you're losing control, take a quick 15 minute break and rest your thinking for the next session.

Tip#3-Don't bet a double down or split high pairs unless absolutely necessary. If the house has 3's-6's showing, that would be a smart move to play and more than likely you'll win 80% of those doubles or splits. Don't split face cards because they're almost a sure win. Split all aces when you get them. And don't split or double when the dealer is showing high cards. It's again all basic blackjack but you would be surprised at how many players stray away from this basic strategy when they're not thinking clearly.

Tip#4-Play a hot table! Examine hot tables by playing into the emotions and psychology of other players. Also take the time to examine a running 3 play session and try to get an understanding of the win to loss ratio of each player. It's not illegal but you're using this as a tool to find out which tables are sure bets.

Tip#5-And finally, don't be afraid to play one on one with the dealer. Not that it's a bad thing to play with a full table of players. But the more frequently a dealer has to shuffle, the easier it is to quickly turn the tide to the house's advantage. The change in the winning percentage is only about a 1-5% decrease but every little winning edge makes the difference in this game.

There are many things the beginner, intermediate or advanced players can do to improve their odds at the blackjack table. Below we provide a selection of blackjack tips that should help you prolong your time at the table:

The most important blackjack tip: The objective of the blackjack is to beat the dealer. Too many times blackjack hints are written that claim that the goal of the game is to get close to 21.
Is not possible to beat the game consistently. This is probably the second most important blackjack tip to remember – you won’t always win. Accept that losing is part of the game. This will improve your mindset as much as anything and will keep you focused on the game, keeping your skill level up.
Look for a table whose minimum is no more than 5 percent of you total stash. When you choose a blackjack table, take into account rule variations that help the player such as the option of doubling down on any two cards, or the dealer having to stand on soft 17. Even if you do not fully understand them, such rule variations can work to your benefit.

Surrendering can be done when player things he/she is going to lose. This can be verbally communicated to dealer or sliding finger along the dashboard. You will get 50% of your bet back when you do this.
Let’s take a look at what the odds are of winning one of the worst player hands in blackjack - a 16 - when the dealer’s upcard is a 10. If you analyze this hand over and over using a blackjack computer software program, you'll find that you will lose over the long run about 77% of the hands when you hit. That means you will win about 23% of the hands. If I wager a buck a hand, lose 77 hands, and win 23, I would be down $54 (77-23). But what about standing on that 16 rather than hitting? You'll actually do a tad bit worse and if we round the numbers, you’ll end up losing about the same - $54.

Photography: Random Tips and Ideas

ISO

The Exposure Triangle

Shutter SpeedAperture

Definitons:
1.ISO: the measure of a digital camera sensor’s sensitivity to light
2.Aperture: the size of the opening in the lens when a picture is taken
3.Shutter Speed: the amount of time that the shutter is open

Lower ISO = finer the grain in shots,
Use higher ISO in darker settings
100 ISO is generally accepted as “normal” and will give you lovely crisp shots.

Higher shutter speeds can prevent getting blurs in pictures.
For landscape photos, we need small aperture ( f/22 ) and large depths of field to bring crystal clear foreground and background.

Lower shutter speeds are desirable when taking pictures of an object in motion with a purpose of getting a blurry background to illustrate how fast the object is moving.

Of all the multitudes of facets of photography, one of the important aspects yet sounding trivial is the time of the day that we choose to take picture. In my opinion, early morning and late evenings are the best time of the day to take picture because of the lighting effect produced by rising and setting sun respectively. So, ideally when we get up early in the morning we will be able to capture dense fog hang over the water and the first sun that creates and intense light effect.

Different filters should be chosen to suit your mood or depending on what the environment is demanding.

To freeze movement in an image we want to choose a faster shutter speed and to let the movement blur you’ll want to choose a slower shutter speed.

Ideal occasion of choosing longer shutter speed: (note: need to use tripod)

When you’re taking a photo of a waterfall and want to show how fast the water is flowing, or when you’re taking a shot of a racing car and want to give it a feeling of speed, or when you’re taking a shot of a star shape and want to show how the stars move over a longer period of time etc.

For example, if you speed up your shutter speed one stop (for example from 1/125th to 1/250th) you’re effectively letting half as much light into your camera. To compensate for this you’ll probably need to increase your aperture one stop (For example, from f16 to f11). The other alternative would be to choose a faster ISO rating (you might want to move from ISO 100 to ISO 400 for example).

Aperture comes in f/number - for example f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6,f/8,f/22 etc.
So f/2.8 is in fact a much larger aperture than f/22. It seems the wrong way around when you first hear it but you’ll get the hang of it with enough practice!
Depth of Field (DOF) is that amount of your shot that will be in focus. Large depth of field means that most of your image will be in focus whether it’s close to your camera or far away (like the picture to the left where both the foreground and background are largely in focus - taken with an aperture of f/22).

Small (or shallow) depth of field means that only part of the image will be in focus and the rest will be fuzzy.
Large aperture will decrease depth of field while small aperture will give you larger depth of field. A smaller aperture in digital photography increases the depth of field because it influences the focal length. When you have an increased depth of field you will notice much sharper images in long distance shots such as landscapes and cityscapes.

Exercise: Go outside and find a spot where you’ve got items close to you as well as far away and take a series of shots with different aperture settings from the smallest setting to the largest. You’ll quickly see the impact that it can have and the usefulness of being able to control aperture.

As you increase the size of your aperture (make the hole that you shoot through bigger) you let more light into your image sensor. As a result you will need a shorter shutter speed. In the opposite way if you increase the length of time your shutter is open you decrease the necessary aperture that you’ll need to get a well exposed shot.

Aperture Priority Mode: often it has a symbol of ‘A’ or Av’ to indicate it’s selected

Shutter Priority Mode: often has a symbol of Tv or S

Most people use Aperture Priority Mode when they are attempting to have some control over DOF most people switch to shutter priority mode when they want more control over how to photograph a moving subject.

Writing on Old Travel Pictures

I recently scanned old photos in my possession from tens of years ago. These are the pictures from remote areas of Nepal. Achham is my birth place, obviously looking at those pictures brings vivid memories of visiting the place as a school kid.

To travel to Achham, we fly to Safebagar airport. Then, we literally have to walk 12 hours through mountains, passes, and rivers to get to my village(Sugali). However, the scenic beauty of the area is so attractive you never get tired of walking the perilous journey. There are ample falls, high mountains, enchantingly musical rivers( the strong river currents actually make sonorous sound), and of the big rocks you are walking on.

Chandanbari is yet another beautiful place popularly regarded as little rest area village on the way to Langtang National Park. Chandanbari is in Rasuwa district which is about 10 hours drive from the capital, Kathmandu. Rasuwa district, situated at about 120-km north (32 nautical miles) of the capital city Kathmandu has a total area of 1544 sq.km.; it seems like a short distance but due to the long mountain winding roads, the travelling speed is greatly impeded. Peope come to Chandanbari to visit the

place itself, and also as a resting point on the way to either Langtang Trail or Gosaikunda Trail. From this place, you can see lots of snowy mountains like Langtang, and the Ganesh Himal. Also, there are few falls to be seen from this village. This link provides more detail if anybody is interested:http://www.discovernepal.com.np/pdf/Rasuwa%20Fam%20Trip%20Report.pdf

This picture with a group of my friends was a picnic trip to Dolalghat in Sindhupalanchok. It is about 4 hours drive from Kathmandu. I am sitting in the middle with my blue shirt on; I greatly miss all of those friends from high school. I have not a slightest idea where they are today and what each of them are doing! But I guess that is just a simple fact of life ! You keep moving on or departing from great moments time and again.
Peace.

Improvisation Discussion on "Djangology":
One idea that might apply is a chromatically descending idea based off diminished arpeggios. I wrote something out for a student not long ago that began with a C#dim arpeggio (ascending):

before moving on to a descending pattern:

Job Interview Tips & Reviews

Job Interview Tomorrow

Follow-up Interview Preparation for an IT position:
05/15/2009

Questions you can ask:

What do you see as the priorities for someone in this position?

Would you be able to describe a typical day on the job?

Why is this position available? (Is it a new job or where did the former occupant go?)
OR
Why did the last person leave the position?

How long has the position been vacant?

What training programs do you have available for your employees?

Is there a typical career path for a person in this position?

How often are performance reviews conducted and what is your process?

What/where are the greatest opportunities within the organization?

What are the current challenges that your company faces?
OR
What would be my primary challenges if I were selected for this position?

What is your management style?

Some general points to start preparing:
- Identify your strengths
- Sell effectively
- Guide the conversation with your persuasive skills
- Good communication skills can be used by telling brief stories from your past
- Ask recruiter how many interviews are involved in anticipated time-frame for hiring?
- It is acceptable to ask that your current employer not be contacted until you're recieved an offer.
- Create 3 professional references:
Name:
Title:
Dates worked:
Company:
Contact#:
Email:

- Find about how you could follow up
- Plan your route to the place you need to go
- Attire
- few accomplishment stories
- Ask questions( more on this later on in this article ): future opportunities? professional developments? long term goals for the role? etc.

Final Tips: IMPORTANT
- Turn cell phone off
- Firm handshake
- Eye contact
- Send a thank you note

Anticipate Job Interview Questions and Rehearse Your Best Answers
This is one of the most important things you can do prior to your interview. Most interview questions, although worded differently, seek to identify the same basic traits:
What can you contribute to the organization?
> Being a hard-working and honest person, I will bring commitment to quality work and patient care.

How well do you work with others and get along as part of a team?
> I get along very well with my co-employees. I help out others whenever I can and build the sense of team-work by carrying positive attitude. I believe, with my good moral convictions I can contribute to maintaining the standards of healthcare excellence of this hospital.

Why should we hire you over the other candidates?
> tell the story of past accomplishments by introducing your diverse experience. I enjoy troubleshooting instrument problem; instead of getting frustrated with problems/mistakes, I learn from them and am very careful not to make the same mistake again.

Why do you want to work here and would you be motivated to stay here?
> I am fascinated by p's commitment to bettering the health system of our community and I want to be a part of it. elaborate from the annual report, and other information.

You need to show (not tell) the interviewer that you can efficiently and effectively do your job. You can illustrate by sharing past accomplishments and achievements: quantifiable, verifiable contributions to the bottom line.

Douce France – Charles Trenet

Free Translation
02/28/2009

Returning are my familiar memories
I re-examined my black shirt
When I stayed as a schoolboy
On the way off to the school I sang with full voice
Love songs without words
Formerly sung old songs of Soft France
Dear country of my childhood
Deluded with tender unconcern I kept it in my heart !
My village with the bell-tower at the wise houses
Where children of my age
Shared my happiness
Yes I liked you
And I offer you this poem
Yes I liked the joy or the pain
I knew landscapes
And the marvelous sun
During distance voyages
All over there under the far away skies
But how much I prefer to them
My blue sky and my horizon
My main road and my river
My meadow and my house

Harmonic Improvisation and Chord Substitution

Charlie Christian was a great swing jazz guitarist who used common guitar barre chords to formulate his melodic phrases. We will discuss his styles and chord substitution ideas in the following discussion.

In the blues progression Bb Eb F, we can use Bb barre shape in 6th fret. Lets look at the following chord progression:
Am6E7Bb69
Am7 can be substituted with D7. Also in a more complex chord progression of Bm7 E7 Am7 D7, use only E7 and Am7 and solo over A minor scale.
Harmonic substitution ideas work nicely when swapping related chords to spice up the chord progression: you can play a Bm or Fm lick over E7 chord, also playing Em or Bbm licks/solos over A7 sounds equally wonderful.
Complex substitution can also be made, for example, here are list of chords that can be used instead of G7 chord: G7b5, G7b9, G7#9, G9b5, G9#5, G13#9, G7#5b9, G7#5#9, etc.
Add 7th, 9th, or 13th to any chord to give it a jazzy sound. It is crucial to appreciate the fact that in gypsy jazz, standard major or minor chords are almost never played and are instead replaced by minor 6th, major 6th, and 6/9 chords, not to mention their unique fingering on the guitar fretboard with the root note usually on the lower 5th or 6th strings. Diminished chords and arpeggios are extensively used including the diminished 7th arpeggios played over dominant 7th chords in this unique gypsy swing method that became popular in France during 1930s. Diminshed chords are (1 – b3 – b5): Bdim B – D – F, and F#dim F# - A – C.
Some suggested recordings are of these following gypsy guitarists:
Django Reinhardt
Bireli Lagrene
Stochelo Rosengerg
Tschavalo Schmitt
Fapy Lafertin
Jimmy Rosenberg
Josho Stephan
Gary Potter

I will talk a little about modes here again. Modes can be thought of having major or minor sounding properties based on their 3rd interval; this concept is further explained below. Remember the sentence (capitalized letters of each word) to remember the sequence of modes: I Don’t Play Lame Music Any Long

Here is the interval list of all these modes:

1.Ionian: 1234567
2.Dorian:12b34567
3.Phrygian:1b2b345b6b7
4.Lydian:123#4567
5.Mixolydian:123456b7
6.Aeolian:12b345b6b7
7.Lochrian:1b2b34b5b6b7
Also, Super Lochrian mode is used when playing over altered dominant chords(eg. 7#9, 7#5, 7b9, 7#9/5, 7b9/b5, 7b9(#5).
Always emphasize the 3rd and 7th degree of the scales in your soloing.
Notice the distinct natural thirds or the flatted thirds on the above modes. So Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian modes are thought to have major sounding nature, whereas Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian, and Lochrian are thought to have minor sounding nature. Also, if you notice mixolydian mode, it is different than Ionian mode only by the flatted seventh degree. Ionian mode is also commonly referred to as major scale, and Aeolian mode is referred to as a minor scale.

The Three Scales for Rock/Blues Soloing

This article is intended to discuss guitar theory and techniques to intermediate
level guitar players/enthusiasts. Concepts are put in random order, yet they are
simple to understand.

The modes as we now know today started in the prehistoric time, we have now
greatly focused on other modified scales such as major, minor, melodic minor, and
harmonic minor. Also some pentatonic scales like major/minor pentatonic, blues
are profoundly used in modern popular music. Going back to the history, we had
the mode system namely:
Ionian - also known as major scale
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian - also known as minor scale
Lochrian

To simply explain these modes, consider a major scale in the key of C which is
same as Ionian mode; starting with 2nd degree D, it becomes D dorian mode and
so on. Thus, a mixolydian mode is the same as D major scale starting on the 5th
degree.

The three important scales are major pentatonic, minor pentatonic, and
mixolydian scales which are commonly used in blues, rock, and pop music. It is out
of the scope of this article to describe minute technicalities of these scale system,
but my propensity is to greatly focus on minor pentatonic scale if you want to
become melodically innovative.

To constuct a minor pentatonic scale we take a tonic, minor 3rd, perfect 4th,
perfect 5th, and minor seventh. For example in the key of A, we have:
A - Tonic
C - Minor 3rd
D - Perfect 4th
E - Perfect 5th
G - Minor 7th

Also, speaking relative to major scale degrees one can use this formula:
Pentatonic scale: 1b345b7
Note the b stands for "flat". To illustrate this, I will take a major scale in key of

C, and give you the C minor pentatonic scale below it.

degrees:1234567
C major:CDEFGAB
So, our C minor pentatonic scale takes the tones: CEb F GBb
There are 5 different shapes of pentatonic scale you can practise on guitar.

The intervals that I used above may seem to be confusing for a beginner. I will try
to explain the intervals here; the notes go up and down in half steps, so A to A# is
a half step. B and E are natural tones and they do not have sharps, so B to C is a
half step and E to F is also a half step. Taking the note A as our root, lets
formulate all the intervals or name them:
A : Tonic or Root
A# : m2 (minor second)
B : M2 (major second)
C : m3 (minor third)
C# : M3 (major third)
D : P4 (perfect fourth)
D# : tritone or diminished 5th
E : P5 (perfect fifth)
F : m6 (minor sixth)
F# : M6 (major sixth)
G : m7 (minor seventh)
G# : M7 (major seventh)
A : octave

I hope you can now relate music in terms of intervals!
A complete octave of the blues note( tritone or dimished 5th) can be added to a
pentatonic minor scale shapes in guitar to give a bluesy feel. For example, in the
key of A, add D# to give blues sound to A minor pentantonic.

Lastly, avoid playing scales just to memorize them but adapt it to have a clear
idea on how it relates to corresponding chord shapes. For an instance, you can
vertically improvise on A minor pentatonic and D minor pentatonic both starting
on the 5th fret of your guitar. The term vertical improvisation should not be
confused here, it just means you are limiting your playing within few shapes
ranging only few frets on your guitar fretboard ( not always an impressive way to
improvise).

Horizontal playing means to cover multiple octaves while going from one end to
the other end of the guitar neck/fretboard. You could incorporate various scale
patterns while doing so.
I have put all the patterns I have discussed above for you to practise.
Enjoy.

Translating "Ojala"

Ojala - Silvio Rodriquez

I hope that the leaves don’t touch your body as they fall,
so that you can’t turn them into crystal.
I hope that rain stops being a miracle that runs down your body.
I hope that the moon can come out without you.
I hope that the Earth doesn’t kiss your path.

I hope you are finished with the constant glance,
The precise word, the perfect smile.
I hope that something will happen which will erase you quickly.
A blinding light, a shot of snow,
I hope that at least they bring me death,
So that I won’t see you as much, so that I won’t see you always,
In every second, in every vision.
I hope that I can’t even touch you in songs.

I hope that the dawn has no screams that fall on my shoulders.
I hope that this voice forgets your name.
I hope that the walls do not retain, the sound of your weary road.
I hope that the desire goes away behind you,
to your old government of deceased and flowers.

I hope you are finished with the constant glance,
The precise word, the perfect smile.
I hope that something will happen which will erase you quickly.
A blinding light, a shot of snow,
I hope that at least they bring me death,
So that I won’t see you as much, so that I won’t see you always,

I have seen the Provider’s plans for me.
The world has alienated me from memories of you,
Even you are outcharmed by the world’s suffering.
It was by mistake that she smiled today, Faiz,
Do not ask about the feelings of this clumsy heart.’)

Millions of Miles

Millions of Miles

I saw a girl at North Lake, wished she’d remain there awhile
My eyes fixed at her as I stand on the veranda made of tiles

Many many times your well being is hampered by an idle mind
Thus suit yourself and crack up a laughter every once in a while

Seems like yesterday I found me here in new land, seven years have passed by
Who knows how many more before I finally open my old dusty file

How many times have you taken life as it comes your way?
May I suggest, sweet dreams are sought walking millions of miles

Reminishing my golden memories of Langtang Mountains

It was the winter time of 1998 when we went to the Langtang trip. I was joined by my friends Suman, and Arjun. From Kathmandu to Dunche, it was about 12 hours of straight bus-ride through the difficult byroads. The joy after getting to Dunche bazaar was exciting, but the adventure was just beginning.

From Dunche we started our trekking destined to Chandan Bari. Chandan Bari is a small village on the mountains close to Ganesh Himal and Langtang Himal. This village is also a resting area before venturing towards Goshaikunda Lake. Goshaikunda Lake is a sacred lake located at much higher altitude than Chandan Bari. I regret not going to Goshaikunda in that trip despite ample opportunities.

We started walking the trails following the directions to Chandanbari, it was slowly getting dark. We had to be very careful because we were crossing the rivers through handy wooden bridges merely holding
onto themselves, and the narrow trails carved along the ridges of these dangerous steep mountains. It was almost a four hour long exhausting trip, along the way we stop by at so called convenient hotels and eat some boiled eggs for quenching hunger.

At one point, we found out about the apple farm from a local and decided to go there. My friend Suman waited at the nearby stop while Arjun and I went to fetch some apples. This part of our trip was definitely thrilling because of what happened next.

So, Arjun and I finally got there in apple farm; we had a little chat with the owner and after buying some apples to eat on the way we were walking back to the stop where Suman was waiting for us. We kept
walking hoping to get to the right place but in vain. We really got lost and we both started to follow different trails to find that waiting place. And now we both were lost, it was getting dark and we got lost in the jungle. We both knew how grave was the situation. After about 8 or 10 minutes of desperately searching each other by shouting each other's names and trying to find our way to our other friend Suman, we lucking met each other again. Fortunately, the place where Suman was enjoying his noodles in front of the fireplace was not too far.

Again we started climbing those perilous trails in the dark, finally we realized we reached a village. There was no banners or may be it was too dark to see, we guessed that it was Chandanbari. I knew the name of the hotel(Panda Hotel), so we got there and found our friend,Pema. It was an extreme joy of completing the journey and the excitement of what comes next during those seven unforgettable days we stayed with our friend in Langtang Valley.

More to come.
