Winter Melon Stew

,

The other day, I went to a small Chinese restaurant in Birmingham China town.

While we were perusing the menu, the madame (owner chef's wife, I guessed) recommended this dish outside the menu: Water Meln cooked with string mushrooms.

As neither I nor my dining companion had particular idea what to eat, we went for it.

The winter melon (冬瓜), hidden under the sea of string mushroom sauce, was beautiful opaque green and plenty. The winter melons do not have strong taste, but it was nicely complemented by thick and tasty sauce (I thought it contained oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sesami oil).

The price was no cheap £7.80, while other veggie dishes priced around £5, but it is probably justfiable if we consider that string mushroom (エノキ茸 in Japanese) and winter melon are both airborn imported vegetable. Restaurants typically charge 66-70% more on original material price and I think £7.80 is just right in this case.

The other dish we ordered is mixed seafood and vegetablee chow mein, for very resonable £5.80. It was also tasty, though I thought the noodles should not be cut short as it was done here.

Birmingham is full of these small Chinese restaurants that serve both authentic and innovative dishes. I am fascinated.

winter melon soup when cooked long with a good stock beats all soups.

Hi Offspring,
Sounds delicious! I have seen it in photos: winter melon soup in elaborately curved winter melon case. I am afraid I have never eaten it.
In Japan, we braised it and put gooey soup on top. This looks really beautiful, but not exceptionaly tasty.

tabatakayoko 10. November 2007, 10:33

oh i see.

well at least on the bright side, i ain't getting mashed green peas and good fish and chips over this part of the world.

I am not complaining as I can get very decent dim sum and hong kong style Chinese food for affordable price here in Birmingham. They are pretty competent.

I however grumble over the lack of Korean restaurant here. There isn't ANY.

For the Korean food, I am actually thinking about visiting London...

korean food too spicy for me

tabatakayoko 13. November 2007, 07:09

I am after the spicy Korean food, but if you think that the Korean food is all spicy, it is not the case. Their "court" style cooking is not spicy at all, and I found it somehow similar to the Japanese "monks'" style cooking. I discoverted it when I went to Korea, but soon it was introduced also to Japan (I am speaking about 10-15 years ago).

I must say that the winter melon soup doesn't look or sound authentic. First of all, the colour of the stew should be quite light, without any of the dark colour sauces and there should be a wide variety of tasty ingredients in tiny pieces. The noodle dish looks good though for that price.

tabatakayoko 23. December 2007, 14:56

Hi Solid Copper,
Although Offspring recommended me to try winter melon soup in his comment, the dish in the photo ISN'T soup.

solid copper 23. December 2007, 15:31

I see. If you like it, it is worthy.

tabatakayoko 23. December 2007, 23:45

I am not particularly keen on winter melon, but it is nice to have something different from time to time, isn't it.
