Chinese Hot Pot

The other day, I, with four friends, went to a Chinese restaurant in suburb to eat Chinese Hot Pot.

Now, this is the hot pot which is not yet hot. The pot is separated in two sections to contain two types of soups. There were 5 alternatives, and we chose tom yam and herbal.

The pot start to boil in less than 10 min, the we just dump all the ingredients.

These are one of the dishes that the waiter brought to us. You see chicken, mussels, live crams, meat balls, fried taufu, and cow's stomach. Apart from these we had also fish, a big crab, beef slices, and two types of noodles to finish.

It was excellent. We paid about £15/head, and it was all-you-can eat style. When we finish the food, waiters ask us if we want any more and anything we want, they bring to us.

Also the Japanese have our kinds of hot pots, but we tend to limit the kinds of food we put in the pot. For example, if we have beef hot pot, we put beef and vegetable, if we have chicken hot pot, we put chicken and vegetable, and so on. This Chinese hot pot is quite different from the Japanese ones, and we like it too.

Hello Kimbers,

Could she put her birthday candles on the hot pot? :D

This soup separating system seems to be common here (in England) and it is no the first time I see this (although this was the first time I ate one).

Hot pot is a perfect winter food, isn't it?

You call it steam boat, maybe? I have never tried it in Singapore, although I have been there several times. I have to say that the hot pot is better in cold climate. For Japanese, it is typical winter food. :D

yeap we call it steamboat here :D

i like it when everyone gathers around and eat together

The separation in the middle of the pot was originally for soup bases that are spicy and not spicy. Later, due to competition, more and more choices have been offered. :D

We actually ordered one spicy and one not-spicy (Tom Yam and Herbal), but they just kept on mixing together... :D

Welcome Anonymous,

I ate this hot pot in Johnny' Wong's near Wing Yip supermarket, which is not in the town centre.

However, if you go to Birmingham Chinatown, there are several restaurants offering Chinese Hot Pot. Tai Pan, Red 'n Hot, Jacky's Kitchen, Han Dynasty to name the ones I know. I hope you enjoy the hot pot in one of these restaurants.
