Jehovah's Witnesses' attitudes to religious and secular festivals.

Witnesses do not celebrate birthdays or other secular festivals that originate in other religions.

Memorial of Christ's Death

The most important religious event of the year for Jehovah's Witnesses is the commemoration of the Memorial of Christ's Death, which takes place on the anniversary of the Last Supper, calculated according to the lunar calendar in use in Christ's time. They believe that this is the only observance commanded by Christ.

Christian festivals

Witnesses do not celebrate Christmas or Easter because they believe that these festivals are based on (or massively contaminated by) pagan customs and religions. They point out that Jesus did not ask his followers to mark his birthday.

Secular festivals

Witnesses do not celebrate birthdays or other secular festivals that originate in other religions.

Ok I get Easter, but Christmas?
I think it becuase it has became so much more to most people than a religious holiday and became more commerical greed.

It looks like Jesus was not born on December, Mecha. Though, really, it's due to Jesus didn't command to celebrate his birthday but to remember his death's day instead.

I do not remeber either being mention to be noted as a celebration.

What date is this celebrated, I am curious?

zrafatdjmd1 Monday, September 10, 2012 1:39:34 PM

*** w94 3/15 p. 4 The Lord’s Evening Meal—How Often Should It Be Observed? ***

Remember, too, that Jesus initiated this observance and then died on the Jewish calendar date of Nisan 14. That was the day of the Passover, a festival reminding the Jews of the great deliverance they had experienced in Egypt in the 16th century B.C.E. At that time, the sacrifice of a lamb resulted in the salvation of the Jewish firstborn, whereas Jehovah’s angel struck down all the firstborn of Egypt.—Exodus 12:21, 24-27.

The Passover was an annual celebration. Logically, then, so is the Memorial. The Passover—the day Jesus died—always fell on the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan. Hence, Christ’s death should be memorialized once a year on the calendar day that corresponds to Nisan 14.

zrafatdjmd1 Monday, September 10, 2012 1:41:11 PM

Mecha, the answer to your question is.. According to the Biblical method:

Nisan 1 is determined by when the new moon nearest the spring equinox can likely be observed at sunset in Jerusalem.

Counting 14 days from that brings one to Nisan 14, which usually corresponds to the day of the full moon.

By the same token, every year the date for memorial is different..

Mechamechame Monday, September 10, 2012 6:04:45 PM

Thanks for explaining it. I am curious about things and you were nice to expalin it.

zrafatdjmd1 Monday, September 10, 2012 6:10:05 PM

Oh.. I like to explain my mind way and listen others.

I am tremendously curious as well and doing my best and displaying as tolerance as possible..

I love to know about everything... It is one of my many 'faults' I think lol
