If Battle for Wesnoth would be first person shooter with similar level of quality, it would be quite likely be lot more popular. Now it's excelent fantasy role playing strategy game that doesn't look bad compared to commercial alternatives. Sure, there's no fancy 3D graphics, but that's not so important in genre like this.

Productivity is something that everyone, regardless of if he or she wishes to deny it, wants. No one wants their Windows PC to be complicated, and yet it is. This is partly why so many Windows users have Mac-envy, because Mac OS X is so simple to navigate and use that is laughs in the face of Windows. So, what has Microsoft tried to do to fix this?

Games, gadgets, techie, tech-tagging
...
There's a new game going on in the forums. It's called tech-tagging. When you're tech-tagged you have to post about 5 of your gadgets and tag 3 other members.
1. When you're tech-tagged you have to post about 5 of your gadgets (phone, games console, TV, computer, washing machine, anything) in this forum thread.
2. Then you have to tag three other #techie members by linking to their profiles in your post and sending them a private message where you tell them that they have been tech-tagged and have to post about 5 of their gadgets in this forum thread according to these rules. Remember to include the link to this thread.
If you want to join the game, you have to become a member and wait for someone to tech-tag you.
Have fun!

Mac OS, wanted, techie
We in #techie want to include as many people as possible. The current moderators know some about Windows, Linux and BSD. But we're missing an important platform. Mac OS.
If you know something about using Mac OS and think you could help, you could become our Mac OS moderator. You'll get access to post in the blog and moderate the forums. And you'll get access to the moderator forum.

. You'll also become an operator in our
IRC channel at OperaNet.
Leave a comment if this sounds interesting to you.

It's hard to find sites that have just the important news and no usual junk. Some sites just link stories without doing any research. But everything that gets site readers is good, right? But anyway, let's see what sites I have. If you're allergic to open source and Linux, most of these sites might not be good for you.

As I mainly use FreeBSD, two of these programs don't work with Windows at all. Though
Google finds few reviews for you, if you want to find more readers that work in Windows. But for the rest of us, here's review of few free RSS readers. And if you're wondering what RSS is, I wrote post
about it some time ago.
This is not going to be comprehensive list of all readers, I have left some readers out that didn't seem to have features I want, so I haven't even tried them out. I use keyboard heavily and go through number of feeds daily, so that affects reviews too.
Let's start with the integrated readers

If Microsoft is making your life too difficult with all those
anti-piracy checks in MS Office, there's a way out. Or maybe it's just too expensive. No matter what's the reason, there are few free alternatives. Most popular one is
OpenOffice.org and bit less known is Abiword (though it's just word processor, not complete office suite). For Linux users out there, there's also
KOffice. It's not impossible that it has Windows version too some day. All three support more or less MS Office document formats, OpenOffice does it even better in some cases.

Not a long time ago, there was guy who was asking for a free IDE (Integrated Development Environment). There were some suggestions to get one from P2P network, but that's simply not necessary. Even Windows has some free tools.
I haven't tried these myself, but at least I can point you in right direction. And you can always demand your money back if they don't work.

Year 2006 hasn't been completely silent in information technology. I can't say that I remember everything that has happened, but I can always try. And maybe you remember different things so I would like to see what you think was most groundbreaking news item, gadget or whatever that involves technology so I would like to see some comments.
