police state, surveillance, Britain
The Independent Online reports that Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years.
The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts.

cars speeding Britain
I recommend a great rant by George Monbiot in the Guardian against media bore Jeremy Clarkson who epitomises selfish, macho, "boy" racers who have mounted a campaign against the use of speed cameras in Britain.
Last week the Department for Transport published the results of the study it had commissioned into the efficacy of its speed cameras. It found that the number of drivers speeding down the roads where fixed cameras had been installed fell by 70%, and the number exceeding the speed limit by more than 15mph dropped by 91%. As a result, 42% fewer people were killed or seriously injured in those places than were killed or injured on the same stretches before the cameras were erected. The number of deaths fell by more than 100 a year. You can read the article at

blair, education reform, privatisation, corruption
The Guardian reports that a 'super-head' schoolteacher honoured by New Labour will escape legal action despite making illegal payments and wasting taxpayers' cash.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uklatest/story/0,1271,-5368250,00.html?gusrc=ticker-103704The New Labour agenda of privatising education provision will provide even more opportunities for Blair's chums in big business.
