The legend of Chử Đồng Tử and Tiên Dung

, ,

Under the reign of King Hung the third, the King had a beautiful and smart princess named Tiên Dung. People said that her beauty could compare with the beauty of fairies on the heaven. Although she was at the age to get married, Tiên Dung still did not want to marry anyone. She just liked to travel around, found new beauty spots in the country. The King loved her very much and let her do whatever she wished. Tiên Dung and her servants usually went out by boat. Sometimes she went out for months, followed a river to the sea or explored a large lake which nobody ever had come.

At that time, in a small village, there was a poor man and his son named Chử Đồng Tử. They lived in a small hut near a river. The father and the son loved each other very much and always tried to work hard to make ends meet. Unfortunately, their hut was burnt in a fire. Therefore, their lives became much harder. They had nothing to wear but a loin cloth. They wore it by turn when going out. When the father got sick and dying, he told his son to keep the coin cloth for himself. Chử Đồng Tử could not stand seeing his father buried without clothes so he wore the only loin cloth for his father. Living alone without any cloth things, Chử Đồng Tử had to go fishing at nights when nobody could see him. In daytime he had to deep his body into water, swam to boats to sell fishes.

One day, Tiên Dung in her royal boat came to the place where Chử Đồng Tử lived while he was swimming in the river. Seeing a royal boat with many people and music, Chử Đồng Tử was too sacred so he hurriedly hided himself under sandbank. The princess like the wonderful view of the river bank, she chose a place and told her servant to use a net to make a place for her to bath. However the place she chose was exactly the place where Chử Đồng Tử was hiding himself. Chử Đồng Tử did not know what he had to do, he even did not dare to breath. When Tiên Dung poured water on her body, the water swept sands away and Chử Đồng Tử appeared under the amazed eyes of the princess. The young man did not dare to look at her. Kneeling down, Chử Đồng Tử bowed his head and begged the princess to forget for his offence. After some seconds the princess calmed down and asked the man why he was there. Chử Đồng Tử told her his story. Tiên Dung looked at him and thought how strange he was here – I was planning not to get married but today I meet this man in this situation - that must be our destiny. The princess told him to get up and wash his body. She told her servants to give him clothes.

The princess invited him to come into her boat and have lunch with her. After talking for a while, the princess told him that she wanted him to marry her. The man said that he was a poor man who could not deserve to her. However Tiên Dung tried to convince him that their accident meeting was a destiny and their marriage was a plan of God. Finally, Chử Đồng Tử agreed with her. Their wedding was held right on the boat.

When the King was informed about the wedding, he got furious. He could not believe that his beloved daughter had decided to get married without his permission. It was even worse for him because his daughter – a precious princess of the kingdom – who did not want to take a look at a prince, a duke or a lord of a land but chose to live the rest of her life with a poor man who had nothing. That was a serious offence for the royal family. Therefore, the King declared that Tiên Dung was not his daughter any longer and she was not allowed to come back to the court.

Tiên Dung knew her father was very angry but she still wanted to live with her husband. They started their new life in the countryside. They opened a market to engage trade with people. Many people came there to sold and bought goods. The market quickly became one of the biggest markets in the area. Even foreign merchants knew and came there. Tiên Dung and Chử Đồng Tử became richer and richer. One day, a foreign merchant prince invited Chử Đồng Tử to join with him in a big trade affair. Tiên Dung wanted her husband to go outside and learn more so she advised him to accept the invitation. Chử Đồng Tử started to go with the man and his servants. When they went to the sea, they crossed a beautiful island. Chử Đồng Tử decided to stop by to enjoy the beauty of it. On the island, he met a Taoist hermit. Talking to the hermit, Chử Đồng Tử was brighten his heart so he told the merchant to take his gold to buy goods for him while he stayed there to learn with the hermit. When the merchant finished his work, he came over to get Chử Đồng Tử. At the farewell, the hermit gave Chử Đồng Tử a hat and a stick as his presents and said that they were magic things which would help him someday.

When Chử Đồng Tử arrived home, he told his wife about the wonderful time learning at the island. Chử Đồng Tử taught Tiên Dung what he had learnt from the hermit. After that, the couple decided to give up trading and went out to learn more and help people. They shared their fortune with poor people, taught them work, rescue people who got serious disease. Their good reputation was known everywhere.

They kept travelling thru many places. One day, they passed thru a wild area. It was late and there was no house around. Chử Đồng Tử pitched magic stick which was given by the hermit and put the hat on it. They stood under the hat and slept. When they got up in the following morning, they found themselves in a very big, beautiful palace. The palace seemed to be even bigger than the royal palace. There were many servants were willing to server them. People were surprised and believed they were God and Goddess. So, they came to the palace to congratulate them and asked for their advices which helped them a lot. More and more people knew about Tiên Dung and Chử Đồng Tử. However, that made the King worried. He got afraid of their power and wonder if they want to rule the country. So, he ordered his army to come to arrest the couple. When his troop came near to the palace, it was late evening. They dared not pass thru the river in such a late time with darkness so they camped on a river bank and waited for the morning.

Many people heard that the King wanted to arrest Chử Đồng Tử and Tiên Dung. They came to the palace and wanted to protect the couple. However, the couple denied their help, they did not want to make the King misunderstand. They said that the King was their father and they always loved him no matter what he did. They ordered all their servants left their palace to go home. In the midnight, there was a thunderstorm blow that cared all people. It rained heavily. Winds seemed want to blow everything up to sky.

In the following morning, people surprised to see that the palace was gone. There was not a small thing left which showed that there had been a big palace there. The troop looked at the place where had had the palace and the only thing they saw was a large lake. People called the lake Nhất Dạ (One - night lake). It was said that the couple had gone to the heaven and they usually came to help people when someone needed their help. Chử Đồng Tử is one of the Four Immortal Gods in our belief, he is the symbol of love, marriage and wealth.

Bring sunshine to my corner

Today, when I went to market to buy something to prepare for lunch I saw a woman with a lot of flowers. She was standing there, under the hot sunshine of a summer day, next to her bicycle which was covered by roses, trying to sell some of them. Aww, I loved those flowers. They looked very beautiful - red, orange and light pink roses – I just wanted to have all. She smiled to me and asked me to buy from her. I smelled the sweet perfume of them and picked up a bouquet of light pink roses. Finally, I had 4 big bouquets in my arms – light pink ( I like to call them ice-cream colour) and orange ones. Everybody was surprised why I could buy so many flowers – well, it was about a hundred roses if you wonder. Yay, I love them so so much even though my fingers got hurt with their thorns heart

Behind the laughter

My phone rang
I talked something
I laughed aloud
You heard a joke
I laughed again
You saw a funny woman!
Would you imagine
how I feel
It was only hurt
Too hurt for me
I did not know
How it could be
But it was there
I could not share
I could not tell
Why it could be
Behind the laughter you heard
just hurt
for me...

A legend of the star apple/ Sự tích cây vú sữa

Once upon a time, in a village, there was a mother and her son lived in a small cottage. The mother worked hard every day to take care of her son. However, the boy was very lazy and liked to play with nasty children. Therefore, the mother was worried about him and tried to talk to him but the boy did not want to listen to her. One day, when the mother told him off because of doing something wrong, he was sulky and left his home. He went out with his friends. They went to other villages. The mother was so sad and went to look for him but she could not find him out.

After a long time playing around, the boy felt tired. His friends left him to have fun with their new friends. He had nothing to eat. He had nowhere to sleep. Nobody cared for him. He missed his mother and decided to go home. He was sure his mother would not angry because he knew she always loved him a lot.

When the boy came back, the small house was very quiet. Nobody was home. Everything was still the same as he left. He called his mother but there was no answer. The boy started to worry. He went around the house, came into the garden to look for her. The mother still did not show up. She seemed to move to somewhere else.

Tired and hungry, the boy cried under a green tree in the garden. It was amazing, the tree was shaking lightly. Tiny flowers appeared as white clouds and then, became strange fruits. The fruits grew quickly. A ripe fruit fell into his arms. The boy picked it up and tried tasting it. The juice of the fruit came as a flow of milk. It had taste as the mother’s milk – fragrant and sweet.

The boy looked at the tree. Leaves were deep green. However, the other side of leaves looked like his mother eyes that cried so much for him. The boy cried loudly. The branches of the tree held him like his mother’s arms. The boy regretted very much but he could not change anything. He stayed at home, took care the garden.

Many people liked the strange fruits. They called them “vú sữa” (means milk-breast). They asked for seeds and planted in their gardens.

Go home

I used to go home by buses. I have a bad habit when sitting in a bus: always feel asleep and I usually sleep in a bus, especially in a long journey. Whenever a driver-mate woke me up as I had told him/ her before, one or two people sitting next to me smiled and asked me how I could sleep too much – a smile was the best answer I could give to them. How could I know why I always want to sleep when sitting in a bus in a long journey (that long – to me- means some hours). Anyway, a wonderful ability of forgetting way and my sleeping habit gave you a funny person: “Somebody” did not know exactly the way to go home. Humm, nobody heard that could hold their breath because of laughing too much - Except my mom and my sister. Of course they believed in me. They had too much experience about this. One day I decided to go home by motorbike. I would drive myself. I had thought about it sometimes but I usually found a reason to cancel that plan: it was too cold, it was too hot, it rained, the road was too crowded, etc. Anyway, my family seemed not to like my idea of driving much. One day, I decided that I had to go home by myself. I told myself that I could enjoy the beautiful sightseeing beside the road and perhaps found out something interesting. Well, first I had to looked at the map, then calling my sister to ask something. One of my friends wanted to go home with me. She had never ever come to my place and wanted to explore a “new land”. Yay, I could not say how much happy I was at that time. She had not been able to think that I did not sure about the way to get to my home. I did not tell her until we started for about 30 minutes. Nobody could image how her voice was. It, well, was complicated. First of all, it was a shout “What? Really?” and turned to be laughter, then, a worried voice “Can you sure we get home before evening?” Well, it was not that bad. I just got lost for, ehh, two or three times. It seemed to want to encourage me so it stopped raining (yes, when we started it was raining). After that, my friend usually had to see if there was any bus that went to my place and she seemed to throw a big stone out when she saw one or two. When we arrived home, my sister could not stop laughing when she heard my friend tell about the journey. She could not believe that I could get lost at the place where nobody could. My friend was still satisfied with our trip. We had much fun when going around, visited some historical places in my hometown. My mother said that I seemed to relate to rain somehow- whenever I brought my friend to our house, it rained. Now I can be proud to say that I will never get lost on the way to go home (unless I decide to drive on another road). You never know if you dare not try to do anything wink A nice song: Home - by Michael Buble
Another summer day
has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome
But I wanna go home
Mmmmmmmm

Maybe surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel all alone
I just wanna go home
Oh I miss you, you know

And I’ve been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
“I’m fine baby, how are you?”
Well I would send them but I know that it’s just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that

Another aeroplane
Another sunny place
I’m lucky I know
But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I’ve got to go home

Let me go home
I’m just too far from where you are
I wanna come home

And I feel just like I’m living someone else’s life
It’s like I just stepped outside
When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
Come along with me
But this was not your dream
But you always believe in me

Another winter day has come
And gone away
And even Paris and Rome
And I wanna go home
Let me go home

And I’m surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel alone
Oh, let go home
Oh, I miss you, you know

Let me go home
I’ve had my run
Baby, I’m done
I gotta go home
Let me go home
It will all right
I’ll be home tonight
I’m coming back home

My translation:

Lại một ngày hè nữa
Đến rồi trôi đi
ở Pari và Rome
Nhưng anh chỉ muốn về nhà
Mmmm

Anh biết mình may mắn lắm
