Technology for Social Action

Not a drop to drink!

I have worked for many years near a place called Cherrapunji (Chee-raa-pon-gee), in India. The place stradles a plateau overlooking Bangaladesh plains. This place held the world record for a long time as the wettest place on earth, until a met station was established in Mawsynram (Ma-sin-ram)close by. Mawsynram stole the crown from that time onwards. Later I heard that some place in Hawaii also is a serious contenter for this title. Anyway what is now interesting about Cherrapunji, Mawsynram and other similar places is the accute shortage of water during most of the year. Poor water management pratices and the changes induced by environmental degradation have slowly drained the area of driking water. It is a common sight to see women trekking miles down the plateau slopes to carry water on their head.

How can modern technology help us here?
