Mission to Miskolc II

Since I was allowed to run again, I have done some pretty good sessions, but limited to under 80' and the running has been exclusively on soft ground. Pain hasn't been very present, only when I have been forced to run some meters on hard ground or when the duration has exceeded 80', so I have been extremely happy with that.!! Ok, there were days better and days worse, but that's normal in a healing process and it goes the right way!!. Minor problems like starting to talk like I would be drunk when the jaw get tired (puh, articulation can really be a challenge, especially with words containing "sch" or "ü") or the right corner of the mouth hanging down when I get tired, those things are irritating, but not deadly . And at least people around me has some entertainment when I start to slur like a drunk one;).

As all ready said, I have been extremely happy with the progress of the training buildup! I've been really looking forward to coming to Miskolc for the easter-competitions. This time I chose to work the week before Easter, since I have been away from work pretty much the last months. Also, I think it would have been way to much for my body at the moment, so it was a good decision. But, Friday at noon, Anita and I left Vienna and headed for Eger/Miskolc. After a short stop to get a map of Hungary, which might be a good idea to have when you want to curve the smaller mountain streets, we travelled straight to Eger. Of course we were way to late for the print-competition, but thanks to Agnes Simon and Bernadette Kelemen, we got some maps and could go for the first training. It was a nice course, without controls it was sometimes a bit tricky, but for me the main challenge was to avoid the asphalt. I succeeded well in that and except some insecurity in the spa area, it was a nice training. I held the speed low, more because of the coming days than because of the difficulty, and sitting here with 3 more competitions in the legs, I think that was a wise decision...

Yesterday was the day of middle distances - qualification and final. The info about the courses promised a fast quali (+/- 4k and 60-80m climbing) and a less friendly final with around 5k and 195m climbing. I was looking forward to the first time orienteering since a month, but all ready on the way to the first control I was flashed back in the reality.. I had forgot that stones are as hard as asphalt, which means my jaw and jaw nerves more or less hate it. Hurray, half an hour of heavy, persistent pain, very funny. I was really frustrated when I finally finished, since I hadn't expected that much pain. Ok, I did 2 mistakes too, costing me 2 respectively 1 minute, but that is ok after a month without touching a map. Of course the time wasn't good enough for a a-final, but since these competitions count only as training for me, that wasn't too sad. After enjoying the fantastic weather (yeh, finally easter competitions without freezing!!!), getting a sunburned forehead and waiting for almost 5 hours it was time for the b-final. Technically that was all ready better, but the concentration was almost zero, since the pain got worse all the time. It started to remind me about the pain when the whole story began, so out there in the forest I decided to skip the relay on the last day. No use in overloading the jaw and the nerves, they are clearly still too sensitive. In the end I ran a shitty time and the fun factor was low (ok, not there..), but after a decent meal at the Irish pub, some 10h of sleep and a some nice messages from home, things went better. Most important of all, I felt like doing orienteering again!!

The pain was still there when we went out to the competitions, but it got less all the time and so I got more happy for every minute;). Long distance is my absolute favorite discipline and even if the shape is far away from good, I was looking forward to a real Hungarian long-distance. With only 15 controls on 10k, there would clearly be some rout choices, and with 450m climbing, you should have some energy in your legs. After missing the start by 10 seconds - I overlooked that the control description was hanging outside the start - stupid, I should know that well enough, I went out into an absolute beautiful forest. Much less stony, clear orienteering, I just loved it! Ok, the form was reeeeelly bad uphill (irritating, since that is normally my strong side, but that will come) and I was slow as grand-grandma, but that doesn't matter. The form will come, there will be enough training to secure that;). Since it was much less stony, the pain was very limited - and I very happy! In the end I got very tired legs, but I guess that's normal when most of your training has been around an hour and then you run a competition for 90 minutes (ok, compared to Minna's 62' the time is beyond all limits, but hey, you can't have everything at once.) The major things - technique and health - was ok, so then I am happy!

Tomorrow the relay will take place, but without me. I will go for a short jog on soft paths and then cheer the Austrian/USA/Hungary-Team.
