Thea Lillehov

the sunny side of life

Almost there...

..just another 4 days and then it is time for my first race at the World Orienteering Championships 2009. Woohaa, nerves are slowly starting to tingle:). Tomorrow we head off to Miskolc and since we have all ready used the official accommodation a couple of times, no big surprises will wait for us there. The food is also well-known. Murphy's Restaurant - the restaurant in charge of the WOC food - has by now brought us many delicious moments, so the nutrition should be fine. The type of terrain and mapping should also be well-known, since easter 2007 I have been on 6 training-camps in the area of Miskolc/Aggtelek mountains.. My map folder is as thick as a Dan Brown thriller:).

So, when everything is so well-known, is it then at all exciting? YES, it is! Orienteering is a very physical sport, but without the technical challenges, it wouldn't be orienteering. In the end, it is simple. The less mistakes/loss of time, the better the race. I am really looking forward to face and to solve those technical challenges and to get my legs go rock'n roll! Hopefully we'll get to run a lot of nice, long, steep hills!. How well I solve the problems and how fast my legs can be, we'll see. I will run the long distance, the sprint and the relay, which is takes place on:
Monday 17.8: Long Distance Qualification
Thursday 20.8: Sprint Qualification, Sprint Final
Friday 21.8: Relay
Sunday 23.8: Long Distance Final

Last weekend I spent 4 days in Wallis in Switzerland, doing some final training and getting my thoughts of orienteering for a while, which was really good. We have been so often to Miskolc, that the last time was a bit too much of the good cake. After coming back home, my longing for WOC and orienteering in the Bükk area was about zero, but the days off apparently did miracles, because when I woke up this morning, my first thought was that I am looking forward to the WOC. Must be a good sign.
In Switzerland I did some easy running, one short but intense uphill-running (265m climb) and one long, easy training from Zinal down to Mottec and from there up to the Sierre-Zinal-course (making 950m climb up and more or less the same down). It was beautiful there and the view to the fantastic mountains surrounding Zinal gave a real energy boost. My legs worked great on the last training and this feeling, together with the energy I got from the nature, I will take with me to Hungary. Mind and body are prepared, it's time to rock.
