35km vs. 4km - heaven vs. hell.

Today I did the last hard training of this period - yeah! It was for sure the hardest training since long time, even if 2x5x400m doesn't sound too bad... The reason: a fantastic day on the xc-skies yesterday, making 35Km and 850 m climbing in 3:15h. The weather was a dream - and the slopes freshly prepared, all you can wish for a perfect day on the skies. My course took me from St.Jacob im Walde to the Kreuz-Rabl-Hütte at Hochwechsel, from there on a 7,5Km round-course around the hill and then back to St.Jacob. It was a fantastic tour, but in the end my arms got really tired and hunger bigger for every minute, so I was pretty happy to get back to the area to start a big food-attack. Driving the 100 minutes back to Vienna was a challenge for the arms and the rest of the evening I spent eating and drinking, ending it in front of the telly with a box of chocolate chip ice-cream - I had the feeling I just couldn't get enough to eat;).
This morning the legs were pretty stiff, to be honest I felt like at least 90 years old when I finally got myself out of the bed. A good, strong coffee made me finally wake up, but I felt the load from yesterday throughout the whole day. Knowing what kind of training waiting for me made me look forward to it with lots of antipathy. I knew the legs were so heavy it would not be the fun it normally is. Ok, ok, I do know, that making such a long training the day before a track-training is not the smartest idea, but yesterday was just such a wonderful day and the long tour was a spontaneous decision.
Coming onto the track today, my appetite for a interval-training was about zero and after two times 400 m I thought about giving it a break.. But, I'm not being born a stubborn girl for nothing, so I told my self to go on and so I did. It was really hard and the fun factor was low (ok, not existing), but I was able to run the planned times (80") in a even pace, only varying with some tenths of a second and even speed up a bit more on the last two intervals (77"). Still I was really happy when the last interval was done! I invested some extra-time in the cool down and stretching afterwards and has been eating like a wolf this evening too. Except for the ice cream, I'll save that to the next emergency situation
.
Tomorrow I'll fill the day with some 10h of work and then I'll go for some jogging, at least if I got enough energy left. From Wednesday till Sunday noon I have osteopathy course all day long, so training will be held on a minimum level. Time to be a brave student - and to let the body get some rest. From Monday on we will put in basic endurance training for some weeks and then it is soon time for a training camp in Portugal!
