the sunny side of life

Lipica Open

Last weekend I spent in Lipica (SLO), running the Lipica Open. Having three weeks of pretty hard training in the legs, my goal was to enjoy orienteering, meet friends again and get to eat some fantastic cream cakes. Most of these goals I was able to reach, only Saturday I missed out on the enjoy-the-orienteering part.

I have been running four or five times in Lipica and I knew the map and the forrest pretty well, still Saturday was not very much fun. Technically it was not that bad, I was running a bit zig-zag on the second long leg (3-4) and on the first control I missed about 1 minute, looking for it about 50 m to early. The rest was ok, but I had no speed and could not push my self to run hard. I also was running a bit to carefully in the stony areas, since at the moment I am not very used to this kind of underground. Sunday's competition (chasing start) made a lot more fun, even if the race it self was not that good. It started very well, not getting the map into the plastic bag, then having to make a toilet-stop before I had been running 4 minutes and then getting to far to the right on the route to the third control. I was able to correct pretty soon, still I dropped about 1 minute there. Some control later on I catched up first Sabine R. Mamleev, then Ursi Kardan and then I made a too-far-to-the-right-mistake again. This time it cost me more than 2'.. Thankfully, the other girls made the same mistake. Next control (14) also made the three of us some problems, then it was placed much deeper than expected. Again 1' lost. For the rest of the course I only made a small mistake on nr.18, running to much in the green area. During the up-hill running from 16-17 I had left the two other girls behind me, but at nr. 18, Ursi got back on me. The rest of the course I was running in front, fighting to keep her behind me. The finish lane was a tiiiiny bit slippery, so I ended my finish-sprint on the butt, sliding over the finish line. Well, it's never too late to make some new experiences;).

This week I will take it easy, doing only some regeneration training, and at the beginning of the weekend I will run a 5000m-test. It will again be a pretty hard week at work, but that's OK, since I really love my work. I think am really priviliged to be able to combine the two things that I love most: orienteering and physiotherapy. Of course, it can be stressful many times, combining work, training and regeneration, but still, even if I could, I don't think I would be happy doing orienteering on a full-time base. Maybe for a short periode it would be okay, but sooner or later I would probably start missing the challenge of my work.

As all ready mentioned, the previous three weeks have been filled with quality trainings and I feel that I have made some good progress when it comes to running longer distances on a higher speed. After this week things will change a bit, more hilly intervalls coming into the game. Next 6 weeks after this rest-week will include two training camps in CZE, Austrian Ultralong Champ (13.4), first Austrian World Champ qualification (19.4, CZE) and Tiomila. I am really looking forward to it!

Two weeks ago my camera decided to have some electronical break-down, so until it gets repaird (which seems to take some time..) there will be no new photo's. Sorry for that, but I will make up for it again later;)

Sunday, sunny Sunday! Not everything makes fun
