...
All four of us spent the Easter holidays on holiday

We went to Barcelona for a couple of days then caught a cruise ship and visited Malaga, Lanzarote, Teneriffe, Casablanca and Cadiz. We had a great time.

Wales, holiday
Just over 1000 miles later and we're back home after our week away in Wales (with the kids staying with their Nannie in Leicester). Sheep, hills and rain is probably an apt description for our week, but it was great to get away and lovely to go somewhere we'd not been before.

holiday, Machynlleth, Wales, Roman Settlement
Today is effectively the last day of our holiday as we'll be travelling all day tomorrow. We've had a relaxing day today, hanging round the bungalow and onto Machynlleth for lunch.
In the afternoon I went for a walk round the local village Pennal where I discovered that nearby there is apparently evidence of a Roman settlement!

Spain, Madrid, food, holiday
...
On Sunday we had cafe y churro at a local cafe (called Arysol) for breakfast

We then headed in search for El Rastro street market. The market was enormous and there were thousands of people. The stalls ranged from antiques to gas masks to t-shirts and general tat.

Next, we went to the Renia Sofia art museum. It was a massive place (and ex-hospital I think) that had lots of abstract pieces of art. Some were bizarre, others I felt I could have done better (but that's probably because I'm not an art appreciator nor an artist).
We spent the late afternoon/early evening in a cafe watching the F1. Poor old Lewis didn't manage to seal the championship, but then neither did Alonso. It was interesting to see the F1 coverage as (not surprisingly) they're massive Alonso fans. There are Alonso branded products and massive TV coverage with him. The most amusing thing was they kept showing various Plazas around Spain with hordes of people waving Alonso flags and banners, then they'd cut to Stevenage (where Lewis is from) to an empty sports bar - although I didn't understand the commentary it was clear the point they were making.
In the evening we went in search of a restaurant along Cava Baja only to find it closed. Found another which we booked a place at for the next day as it was fully booked and headed back into the centre to have dinner at Museo De Jamon. This place is a mixed from a deli, cafe and restaurant. It has drying hams hung on every wall.
We finished the evening with Ben & Jerry's ice cream in Plaza Mayor.

Madrid, Spain, holiday
Julia and I got back from Madrid this morning. We went on Saturday and had a great time.
We visited lots of museums, ate loads and took in the sites.

Madrid (hence the MAD - the airport code - in the title) isn't a particularly beautiful city at eye level. It would seem that great effort is made to maintain good looking buildings from the second floor up, but little is done on the first floor. Most shop fronts and doors have grafitti on them. We saw quite a few homeless people begging. The instrument of choice appears to be the accordian with chaps popping up all over the city playing out a tune in the hope that someone will give them a few Euro for their trouble.
There's a big police presence throughout the city which makes you feel safe particularly in areas where pick pocketing and theft are reported as being high.
It's an amazingly busy place. We arrived around 19:00 on Saturday evening, so the shops had reopened for a couple of hours and there were thousands of people about (not easy to navigate through with wheelie suitcases and when you don't know where you're going). That said the Metro (which was notably cheaper, bigger and cleaner than the London Underground) was not that busy which made travelling about relatively easy.
Our digs were a Hostal in the heart of the city (a few steps away from Plaza Del Sol and Plaza Mayor). Described as a little pricey for back packers it wasn't as nice as we thought it would be. But the room was clean and the staff helpful and friendly and after all we were only using the room for somewhere to sleep at night.
Look out for the blog postings with photos to hear what we got up to.

strange, holiday, list
Whilst my daughter and I were at Thorpe Park a couple of weeks ago, staving off nausea caused mainly by the Zodiac Ride, we observed a number of oddities at the Park.
So many in fact (and I'll know my blogging colleague
Funky Pancake will appreciate this), that my daughter suggested that we keep a list, so we did and I've just remembered, so here it is:
We saw:
A man dressed as a cow
An older gentleman in a flowery overcoat enjoying the train ride too much
Lads in flowery shirts and stetsons
Some were wearing inflatable hats
A couple of chaps wearing big pink "Bad Girl" hats
and not least of all (and a s feature a the park) the professional oddities: the Fungles.

family, holiday
Well two weeks holiday has passed and I'm back to work today.
We've had a great 2 weeks, for what was an adventure holiday based from home. We managed to fit in a trip to Thorpe Park, horse riding in the New Forest, feeding deer in the New Forest, kayaking along the Jurrasic Coast, a ride in a hot air balloon, some sailing, paintballing and a visit to an arts festival. We also managed to do some jobs round the house and fit in some shopping, with mum, dad and my nieces joining us for their own holiday based from our home in the second week.
A good time was had by all

Just back to reality now - the kids are back at school on Wednesday and Julia is back to work tomorrow.
Roll on the next holiday

food, family, music, holiday
Today we went to Upton Country Park to an art festival with mum, dad and the girls. We started off with a picnic for lunch.
There were activities which the girls enjoyed including making mobiles for the garden, reed butterflies and circus tricks, as well as live music.
