Rumour Mill

,

Sources close to the Cisco Systems Blues Festival are reporting KISS, Jeff Beck, Mick Taylor, The Alan Parsons Project, Paul Simon and Jackson Browne are among the acts coming this summer.

Also included in the rumour mill is Grand Funk Railroad, The B-52s, Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire, Iggy Pop, folkie Chris Smither, Dave Mason, David Lindley, Belle and Sebastian, Stone Temple Pilots, Los Lonely Boys, Michael Jerome Browne and Blue Rodeo.

I don't know why they still call it Bluesfest. Sure there are some amazing blues artists but it goes way beyond blues. The lawn chair debate has already begun, allow them yes or no. Regardless I'll bring mine along.

The complete schedule for Bluesfest, which runs July 9-19 at LeBreton Flats, will be announced April 22.

Weather Weirdness

, ,

Wow what a difference!

Waking up yesterday, it was +7 outside and raining, all through the day nothing but steady rain and wind blowing it all around.

By 4:00PM that rain was ice and the temperature was -15 with a windchill of -26. Needless to say - everything and I do mean everything quickly froze over.

The weather office predicted this flash freezing, television and radio stations reported that this was going to happen, the police were advising every one to slow down on their way home from work; did it make a difference? Hell no!

The city claimed it had no warning and so didn't get out to salt and sand the roads. drivers spent most of their time in ditches, the number of collisions rose exponentially every 5 minutes. I watched car after car slide through the corner and into each other and for what?

Have people forgotten how to drive? Did everyone forget this is Canada and it is after all winter? Where were the salt trucks? Oh yeah they apparently don't listen to the radio or watch TV, they missed the warnings from the day before.

Right now it is -18 with the wind making it feel more like -26 and I still haven't seen or heard a salt truck go down my little street. I have heard a lot of thumps and bangs though while cars slide into each other.

Back for the weekend

, , , ...

Busier than a one legged man at a butt kickin' contest; but I've got the weekend.

It's a good thing other people handle the travel plans, I wa sure I left on Tuesday - nope I'm gone again on Monday. I'd be totally pooched without others. Okay - so I could look at a calendar, that works as long as you aren't crossing time zones constantly and can actually remember what day it is.

Apparently the bus strike here is over. For 51 days, since Dec. 10th nobody in this city that relies on a bus got anywhere without leaning on friends and family. Most of the time I walked and I'm happy to say I dropped an inch off my waist and have the leg muscles all ready to get on the bike and ride. Now if only the snow would quit.

The canal is all frozen and back in use. This city loves it's skating rink and for a lot of people, this was one of the ways to get downtown without a bus.

The Rideau Canal was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and every winter becomes the world’s largest skating rink. Some people claim Winnipeg has the longest rink - but a shovelled pathway on a river doesn't count for much.

For your viewing pleasure I've dropped into the live web cam feed. Not only do you get to see what is happening, you can get a chuckle watching some of the "skaters".

The 2009 World Junior Championship got under way today in Ottawa.

December 26, 2008
CZE 1 vs CAN 8

SWE 3 vs FIN 1

USA 8 vs GER 2

RUS 4 vs LAT 1

Russia completely walked all over Latvia, Team USA did a number on the Germans and Canada soundly beat the Czech Republic in the opening games.

Will this year make it 5 in a row for Team Canada? Who knows.
You can follow the games at CBC Sports or at TSN.

Day 7

, ,

Here it is Day 7 of a transit strike and no end in sight.

Yes it's a little difficult getting around the city, but only slightly. Most people are bitchin' about the traffic in the morning and afternoon rush hours and to them all I can say is - if I can get there so can you!

When all is said and done, there are going to be a lot more healthier people out there. Why? The only way to get around for a lot of us is to walk and walking is good excercise. Okay so yesterday with the rain wasn't so great but that's where planning comes in.

We've had one city councillor that stated yesterday that the city should cave in to the union. What a mistake that was - he's been raked over the coals by everyone including those that are truly shut in. This councillor should learn to shut his mouth and I'm sure the flood of e-mail he's getting is telling him just that.

Let them stay out on strike, we are doing just fine without them.
