All Quiet on the Home Front

, , ,

Quiet doesn't begin to describe the atmosphere around here. Not that it is normally noisy, I just think the wet weather and grey skies are keeping people inside and subdued.

A little cloud didn't deter me though. Waking up today at the crack of noon, I decided I needed a hair cut. Yep out of the blue I wanted it all shortened. A hair cut on a Saturday? I must be nuts, the place will be loaded with people.

Not a problem - I walked in and was out 10 minutes later, not a soul in the place but me. Very unusual! Next on the list, food; I was a little hungry and honestly just a wee bit too lazy to cook anything for myself. I hate cooking to begin with!

Bonus points again, walking on down the road a little cafe was open. Normally they only serve breakfast and lunch and close up for the day. This weekend they are experimenting with staying open for dinner as well and nobody knows anout it yet.

The Baker Street Cafe is very inconspicuous, hidden behind a very simple facade there is no indication of what you might fond inside. I was more than pleasantly surprised. Nothing fancy, just really good food and decent music playing at an easy level.

I asked for a burger, nothing fancy and got the best damn one I've tasted in a long time. The thing was huge, topped with not one but 3 types of lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, cheese and bacon. That wasn't all, freshly made home fries, fresh fruit and a never ending cup of coffee. I was in heaven.

Will I ever go back there again, you betcha. Yes, not a bad day despite the terrible weather.

Hot Fun in the Summertime

, ,

Man its been HOT!

Over this past week, we've been up and over 30C and lovin' it.

With the heat though my walking around has been a little on the stick to the shady side of the street, but the sun couldn't be avoided yesterday.

Walking along Sparks St. I couldn't help but gain weight even though I ate nothing. The BBQ Rib Cook off is going on and the smells alone will make your mouth water with desire.

With all the heat though, I haven't felt much like eating so I can't tell you who's ribs are the best. To me they all smelled fantastic!

Canada Day is coming up quickly and on Parliament Hill the stage is being built. Check out the web cam image above and you can see the construction happening.

Checking the weather forecast for next week I see the temperature will be dropping to 25 with showers. My garden will love the water and I'll enjoy the cooler temps.

An Off Day

, ,

I spent the entire day in bed. Not because I wanted to, but because I managed to catch the flu. All winter long, not so much as a sniffle, the warm weather hits and I get sick. Nope it's not that weird flu going around the world, just your average ordinary everyday stomach bug that is making life a little miserable.

The day wasn't a total write off though. I caught up on sleep I've been missing, watched hours of "Get Smart" and read Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

I need to get over this bug quickly, I don't want to miss the Dragon Boat races happening this weekend.

I also don't want to be stuck in bed when the weather is supposed to be semi decent. Semi because right now they are saying cloudy with showers on Saturday and lots of sun on Sunday.

Today wasn't one of my best days - it also wasn't a bad day.

Dinner Fun

, , , ...

Dinner for me is never an exciting affair. Usually I eat something if I remember to and then forget all about it. Not a lot of excitement there.

This past Saturday however, a bunch of us got together and celebrated a friends 60th birthday. All I've got to say is ...we all had a great time!

Rather than have a standard boring birthday party we all headed out to Scarlett's for a little bit of fun. Scarlett's Dinner Theatre is home to the Eddie May Mystery Group.

We all had an excellent time. Good food, great one liners, and a cast that somehow worked our birthday celebrations into their play.

My buddy Norm didn't have a clue that any of this was happening, the look on his face when he came through the door was priceless.

The night was a lot of fun and more than likely we'll be doing it all again.

Westboro

, , ,

Doing as little as possible is not as easy as it sounds; it's actually a lot of work and you find out pretty quickly just how boring doing nothing really is. Downtime is always welcome, I'm just not used to anymore than 2 days of it in a row and this is only partway into a 21 day stretch.

So what to do, that's the big question. Laundry (ugh) is all done, the floors are washed, carpets vacuumed, no housework left to do. Cut the grass maybe; nope it was raining yesterday and its all still wet. So much for that idea.

Westfest starts tomorrow! The annual neighbourhood street party begins and people will be out in the thousands.

What started as little more than a store "sidewalk" sale has grown over the years to the point of where the Westfest stage isn't even in Westboro, it sits outside of the actual neighbourhood boundary.

Over the years, the neighbourhood has gone from a quiet little village to where it is now THE place to live and open a business. Great for property values, bad for the many Mom and Pop stores that made the village what it is.

No longer unique, Westboro has become just another noisy, busy, high traffic area like the rest. What made the area unique has been forced out with high rents leaving the box stores to move in.

As much as I like the area - I'm looking to move.

In the meantime though there's going to be lots of opportunities to take pictures over the weekend. I'll be out there with everyone else listening to free tunes, and people watching.
