Sunday Morning

, ,

Up and awake very early this morning, 5:30AM on a Sunday is almost ridiculous! However, I've got to say it was worth it.

The sun was shining, the neighbourhood still sleeping and all you could hear were the birds in the trees. Yes, it was worth being awake.

Unfortunately here it is less than 4 hours later and the clouds have once again moved in. The weather forecast calls for showers right through to Thursday, if this keeps up nobody will have to worry about getting a sun burn.

Today there are over 50 antique cars in the market and vintage aircraft flying overhead heading to the aviation museum. Which way should I head?

I'm thinking the market and the cars - my head isn't often in the clouds.

It's About Time!

Finally! After a long cold Winter, a grey, wet and cool Spring; decent weather is on its way!

According to the latest weather forecast for Ottawa we are all going to be wearing shorts and sandals this weekend. Now I know the weekend is still days away and weather can change with a blink of an eye, but I'm hopefull.

I don't even care that it is supposed to be cloudy on Sunday - Its going to be nice and warm. For those of you who don't understand the numbers, just double them and add 32 you'll get close enough to Fahrenheit temps.

Interesting news this morning. Our provincial government has decided that teachers can no longer fail a student in high school. Doesn't matter if they don't show up, never pass a test or turn in any homework; teachers are not allowed to fail them. What will happen when these same kids try to get a job a get fired for not showing up!

School is a lot more than just learning math, science or english its also about developing work ethics, the ability to do research and responsibility. This next generation is going to be in for a big surprise when the real world kicks in.

Weather Weirdness

Wow what a difference!

Waking up yesterday, it was +7 outside and raining, all through the day nothing but steady rain and wind blowing it all around.

By 4:00PM that rain was ice and the temperature was -15 with a windchill of -26. Needless to say - everything and I do mean everything quickly froze over.

The weather office predicted this flash freezing, television and radio stations reported that this was going to happen, the police were advising every one to slow down on their way home from work; did it make a difference? Hell no!

The city claimed it had no warning and so didn't get out to salt and sand the roads. drivers spent most of their time in ditches, the number of collisions rose exponentially every 5 minutes. I watched car after car slide through the corner and into each other and for what?

Have people forgotten how to drive? Did everyone forget this is Canada and it is after all winter? Where were the salt trucks? Oh yeah they apparently don't listen to the radio or watch TV, they missed the warnings from the day before.

Right now it is -18 with the wind making it feel more like -26 and I still haven't seen or heard a salt truck go down my little street. I have heard a lot of thumps and bangs though while cars slide into each other.

Water and more water

City officials are asking Montrealers to avoid several blocks around Peel Street in the south end of downtown Montreal as crews repair a massive water main break and try to stop the water from spreading.

The water main, which dates back to 1891, broke early Friday morning, sending a fountain of water shooting into the air.

City trucks moved snow into the area to build a dam to prevent the water from spreading farther, including into the nearby Ville-Marie Tunnel.

"What we are looking at is a dam made of snow," said Jacques-Alain Lavallée, who speaks for the borough of Ville-Marie. Aging pipes have been giving way as temperatures drop to lows between –20 C and –35 C, levels Montrealers rarely see even in the coldest of winter months.

On the bright side - that's a whale of a skating rink.

What A Day

What a gorgeous day!

The sun is shining, it doesn't feel very cold outside and Ottawa is covered with a fresh blanket of snow. Sure, there is a transit strike that began today - but on the bright side of it all those smelly, dirty buses are off the road.

Sure it's a huge inconvenience, I like many depend on the buses for transportation; I am also very glad that people are seeing just how ridiculous this union's demands are. The head of the union was on the radio early this morning and basically told all of us to just go F##K ourselves.

The complaint by the union, they want to be able to schedule their own hours and what routes they drive. I don't know about you, but I've never worked a job where I could pick and choose the hours I worked or the work I did.

Thirty five cm's of snow on the ground, roads clogged with all those extra cars and I'm so happy to be able to say - screw 'em leave them out, let them strike in the end they lose more than they gain.
