History Lives

I'm sure you've probably seen this painting online by now - if you haven't here it is.

Painted by Dai Dudu, Li Tiezi, and Zhang An in 2006 this is a huge oil on canvas work featuring historical people. Can you make history anymore exciting?

When you open up the large, much larger file be sure to check out Dante in the top right corner along with the three artists.

If you want to view this as an html file with links to the Wikipedia entries of those in the painting then open this file.

This is really an amazing painting!

Halifax, Nova Scotia

I travel a lot. Not much more to be said about that other than I'm constantly on the road in one part of the country or another. This past trip took me back to Nova Scotia and my favourite city in Canada Halifax.

Seriously if you've never been there you really have to go check it out. What they say about Maritimers being laid back and extremely friendly is very true. This wasn't my first time there so I played tour guide for Tab and Mike; dragging them up and down the hilly streets until their feet just about fell off.

I walked them around the downtown core, past all the historic buildings, along the harbourfront which in the summer is the busiest place I know of; and then straight on into my favourite pub.

Alexander Keiths brewery has been there since 1820 and is still bottling and churning out some of the best beer. The pub inside makes some of the tastiest food around and of course the beer is as fresh as you can get.

Down the street is the Garrison Brewery and a little past that is Pier 21.

Most people don't know that almost every imigrant to Canada passed through Pier 21. It was the first piece of Canada that most saw. For the past 10 years it has been an immigration museum and today still teaches an important part of history.

Halifax is a city with a lot of tradition and history and a lot of devastation. The Halifax explosion of 1917 is still remembered as the absolute worst disaster ever. The stories of the people, survivors or not are told and remembered in the Maritime Museum and during remembrance services every year in December.

What more can I say about a city that is always a surprise and a delight to visit. I can't wait to go back.

Louie Louie

On this day in history, December 10th, 1963 Louie Louie by The Kingsmen was on top of the charts.

Over the years a lot has been made out of such a simple tune, but nothing like the original trouble it caused when it was released.

Dec. 09, 1968 History

, ,

One of the most commonly used computer devices made its debut on this day in 1968, wondering just what that could possibly be?

The humble mouse was first demonstrated December 9th, 1968 in a presentation by Stanford Research Institute engineer Douglas Engelbart. This little presentation of his would go on to be called "the mother of all demos".

Engelbart's mouse pictured to the left was made out of a block of wood, had one button and underneath was two wheels connected to potentiometers. One recorded the mouse's movement along the x axis, the other one tracked the y axis.

The simple mouse has evolved to become for some people an extension of their hand, a piece of art, and most of all an absolutely essential tool. The mouse - as commonplace as the keyboard has let literally millions of people use computers by simply pointing and clicking.
