STICKY POST

Welcome!

Welcome to my little blog :D

This is where I collect the little stories that I write, instead of hiding them in a dusty old notebook. There may also be the occasional real (the horror! :insane:) post, and other possible random bits (probably phone-related). But it's mainly stories . If you want to know about me, there's my About page, or the link section titled "Me Me Me!".

My stories are almost always self-contained. There are a couple of character names I use frequently - Aldernak and Sophie. In any story they can take any role or suffer any fate. On the rare occasion two stories are linked the title will say so - otherwise just treat them as taking place in different realities.

I'm still not entirely sure how I ended up posting here regularly. I signed up in 2006 to ask a few questions in the forums, answered a few while I was there, but mostly stayed away. So in my first 8 months I did about 50 posts, all serious (and mostly on Groupwise WebAccess :faint:). Then, bored one evening in January, I signed on and saw a thread in the Nitrous Intense forums titled 'Create A Story'.

After over 20 months and over 12,000 posts, I'm still here. :D

Hitslink II - The Weirdos Strike Back

, , ,

:sst: just a small intermission. Check in the foyer for ice creams and drinks :left:

1) 'escape chastity belt' (this one came from Princeton University :eyes:)
2) 'gruesome rude games' (for when rude just isn't enough)
3) 'master "please stop" throat' (Er...:eyes:)
4) 'where can i be brainwashed'
5) 'strap-on boobs' (from Norway?)
6) 'midget gun' (ammo might be hard to come by)
7) 'rude do not disturb signs' (pffft! Canadians :rolleyes:p:)
8) 'darth vader's chat up lines'
9) 'names for evil wolves' :left:
10) 'one something' (I've no idea what people are looking for, but this search has appeared on my Hitslink every day since I started my little series and it's coming from everywhere)

Clones

, , ,

This is a little different to my regular story posts. I'd simply like to share an article I read a few months ago, something I found particularly interesting. It's about clones of Western high-tech that are produced in China, leading with a hunt for a cloned iPhone.

China's iClone

I expect a few of you have probably read it before, but it's still worth sharing . It's mostly Opera Mini-friendly, although there is a YouTube video at the end as well.

The obligatory Hitslink post

, , ,

Short and, er, sweet.

These are some of the weirder searches that have found my page :

1) 'im 14 with spots glasses and a bit fat help'
2) 'poke marts in mass' :eyes:
3) 'possible to cough in your sleep'
4) 'pictures of people with hiccups'
5) 'omg M.A.R.T'
6) 'sony ericsson laundry'
7) 'email punishment'
8) 'share mik.zip' WTF? Done using Google Japan
9) 'jeremy bloody beadle'
10) 'red panties avatar' :eyes:
11) 'squonk pictures' Ok, who did this one with Google UK?
12) 'what will i look like with false teeth' :eyes:
13) 'The torturer began by removing her clothing' :insane:
14) 'tie me up and shave my head, please sir' :eyes:
15) 'take cois'
16) 'furie transformer'
17) 'punishment server'

I also get a remarkable number of searches for statistics to do with phones, or ones about problems with SE phones.

Additional - there is a Friends Only post just before this one.

Oh, and I've put a new poll up :left:

list edited to counter effect of new autonumber bug

At the moment...

At the moment i'm sitting in a room at work which when full holds 8 people. It currently holds two, one of whom finished 25 minutes ago and is currently asleep in his chair doing a Darth Vader impression. All the others are either on holiday or finished at 1630.
The room itself is a shithole we were summarily moved to 5 months ago.
Right now i'm feeling lonely and unappreciated :frown:
The question is, do i throw something in Darth's open gob?

Tagged! Again! :faint:

,

:sst: Didn't I used to write stories here?

Today's tag is Kim's new one. It is about inventions. Specifically, I am supposed to list 4 things that I would like invented and 4 things I wish hadn't been.
So, without further ado, here they are. Bear in mind I'm writing this after a stressful day .

Inventions I would like

1) An invisible cattle prod so I can jab people who never notice that there's somebody trying to get past them because they're either deep in conversation or deafening themselves with headphones.
2) A smell-alyzer for public transport, the idea being that people aren't allowed on if their BO is over a certain level, or they've used a whole bottle of perfume, started the day with 10 pints of beer, etc.
3) Infinite Storage. This one's a bit weird. I'm a hoarder - I have hundreds of books, DVDs and other stuff. I'd like something with the 'capacity' of the TARDIS but also with easy retrieval, ie a search engine for physical objects.
4) Corporate Email punishment. Here's the deal. Person X sends lots of emails to Person Y. Person Y identifies that many of these emails contain requests that are either too vague to understand without several email exchanges, or a waste of his time as Person X has all the tools themselves but can't be bothered using them. Person Y will assign each of these emails an 'WALOS' (What A Load Of Shit) rating from 1 to 10. When Person X has sent emails worth 100 WALOS, the internal email system notifies the punishment server, and next time that Person X presses a key on their computer a mild electric shock is received. Repeat offenders get stronger shocks. The WALOS score decreases automatically as time passes, to reward good behaviour.
I cannot think what inspired this one, and I do not have names in my head instead of Person X and Person Y.

Inventions I don't like

1) DVD Regions. Quite simply, fuck off. I'm English and I can't play a US DVD? I've got to wait until the Region 2 version comes out? :irked:
2) Software that fills your PC with crap when installed. Nerdy one, this. I don't want new Services, I don't want extra crap in Startup, I don't want you filling my registry with rubbish that should be in its own little DB, and I don't need an extra 20 hidden 'devices'.
3) Starforce copy protection. Ok, this can fit in 2), but it's such a bastard it needs its own category. I don't want the CD in the drive when I play a game, dammit!
4) Beer . I really dislike the stuff. I hate the smell, the taste, the way that it sticks your shoes to the floor if it's spilled, it's just generally :yuck:. I also dislike that they always fill it to the brim.

Now I must tag 4 people...hm...who haven't I tagged yet for a while?

OK, I'm tagging Mik, Fanny, Dennis (as he's on a bit of a run) and Mehran. Have fun, people

"5 Things I'd Like To See On Opera" Tag

, ,

Well, today's tag (arriving courtesy of Sugarwinx) is the '5 Things I'd Like To See On Opera' tag. It's supposed to be just the browsers, but a misinterpretation has led some people to include My Opera features in the brief.
I'm going to do five of each, so this will be a fairly hefty post.
Firstly, the browsers :

1) Opera for Desktop - Session Management
When I use Opera, I usually only use one window containing lots of tabs. When I use a session, I want it to relate only to one window and its pages. So, right now, I have 5 tabs in one window relating to My Opera. If at the same time I open one of my saved sessions it opens a new window(s) containing all the tabs in that session. If I save that session, it will include all the My Opera tabs as well. From my point of view, a session should relate only to one window and its tabs.
Additionally, the general session management should be improved so that you can see what's in them without opening them, rename them and also edit what's in them.
2) Opera for Desktop - Stopping Page Loads
This is something that bugs me as a dialup user. If I open a page, wait a little while and then realise it's loading about 5MB of pictures, I will usually close that page pretty quickly. As soon as I close that page, I expect the downloading of what's on it to stop instantly. It doesn't - it usually takes about 10 seconds before my connection is free to load other things. I suspect it has to finish loading whatever the last element was.
3) Opera for Desktop - Cache display
This one's real nerdy. I would like the display of the Cache to be improved so it can be sorted by file type, or grouped by domain. I would also like a filter implemented in a similar way to that in opera:config.
4) Opera Mini - RSS Feed Management
Firstly, I would like some way to Unsubscribe to several feeds at once - ie checkboxes and an Unsubscribe to Checked Items option. Secondly, at the top of a displayed feed is the Unsubscribe option. This is rather unforgiving if clicked accidentally - I would like this to have a Confirm option to appear. Thirdly, please restore RSS Feeds to the history view.
5) Opera (all versions) - Shared Bookmarks
I would like some way of using My Opera to store my bookmarks for the versions of Opera. The separate versions could interact with it, and overall admin could be done via a special page where you could designate certain pages as only relevant to a particular device's version of Opera. So, for example, every version I have has a link to Hotmail and My Opera. The two PCs I use have links to Indigo Puzzles. My phone and my home PC have links to my work email.

That's the browsers out of the way, now for My Opera.

1) Friends
This is probably picky, but I would like Friends on My Opera to be split into two categories - People I Like (added as friend but not reciprocated) and Friends (they reciprocated! :D).
2) Subscriptions
Please fix it that the Subscriptions frame doesn't tell me that I have no unread posts when I actually have over 20.
3) Shoutbox
Please make it so that the blog owner can access the archived items, and also so that smilies are displayed in it. Also, for the owner to be able to delete/edit them.
4) Hitslink
When are those of us outside the chosen few getting HitsLink stats accessible from our Account page?
5) Recent Visitors
Whether it's broken, erratic or I'm misinterpreting it I don't know. But I have comments on my blog which predate any Recent Visitor.

That's the lot. There could be more, but it's 00:45.

Finally, I'm tagging brojoy, rose-marie, st0le, Embry Hallowed and, because I'm curious what form his revenge will take, Cois.

New Phone needed

, ,

This is simple enough. The joystick on my SE K800i became unusable a few days ago and I had to revert to the old W800. However, I don't think that will last much longer either. The warranty for the K800 is still valid, but doesn't cover wear and tear, which is what has done for it (via the medium of Opera Mini). I'm still going to try and get a free replacement, but I'm not hopeful. I do have my eye on the K850, but it's not out until late this year and will probably be buggy for the first couple of months anyway. I need a decent phone to tide me over until then.
Anyway, I'm asking for suggestions. So far every phone I've had has been a Sony Ericsson, but I'm willing to consider other brands. I've got a few guidelines :

1) No joystick - Opera Mini will kill it off in 3 months.
2) It must have an FM radio and MP3 player.
3) It must have at least a 2MP camera, ideally more.
4) No touchscreens.
5) It must be 3G-capable.
6) I must be able to expand the memory with external cards.
7) Nice, big, Opera Mini-friendly screen.

I think that's it. :D

Phone Usage Statistics tag

,

Thanks, Mik! :faint:

This will be complicated, as I was using a K800i (my third one) happily until a few days ago, when the joystick finally got Opera Mini-ed to death (although a few days rest for it is helping). I'm currently using my old W800i until I get a replacement. Stats will be tricky as they'll be a mixture of the two phones (where relevant). But I have stats for about a year with the W800, plus 2 months of the K800.

What the...?

,

Just heard this on BBC Radio Five Live. The most random news item ever :

"A giant telescope has opened to scan the skies above the Canary Islands. Brian May, the guitarist from Queen who has an astrophysics degree, was at the opening"*

What the hell? A one minute summary of the news, only five items squeezed in, and one of them was that?!

*quoted from memory, so the words aren't exactly right

Me & Sony Ericsson phones

, ,

I started this little rant here :

http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=2042743

and now I can't stop :irked:
I have to date had 5 (well, sort of 7) Sony Ericsson phones.

Phone 1 : Ericsson T68. No problems, ever
Phone 2 : SE T610. Only problem was the screen was useless in sunlight
Phone 3 : SE K700i. My favourite so far. The only problem I occasionally had was that the music player would occasionally stop by itself mid-track with a buzzing noise. And the memory could only hold 11 tracks, which meant I had to upgrade to...
Phone 4 : SE W800i. A generally good phone, unless you tried to transfer music to it using the USB cable. Then it would merrily wipe the memory card 1 time in 3. At this point my trust in Sony software was not good, and rather than rely on an online download to upgrade the firmware (while the phone was connected to the PC via the cable), I opted to buy a card reader and transfer the music that way. Following the highly disappointing results of trying to take pictures of a friend's party in a darkish room, I targeted one with a better camera, which lead to...
Phone 5 : SE K800i. Initially, this phone had everything. It had 3 megapixels and flash, and passed the dark party test with flying colours. I added a 1GB memory card, and everything was good. For November and December, it behaved itself impeccably.
Late January approached. The joystick had become temperamental, making using Mini a rather nervous affair. Pressing up would scroll a whole page downwards. Down, a whole page upwards, or nowhere. Then one Saturday the phone decided not to let me into the Applications folder, giving me Operation Failed every time. However, come the monday morning, suddenly it started working again. Not only that, but all the protected junk had gone. Hurrah.
Sadly, it waited until the following Saturday before it failed again. This time, in addition to intermittent Operation Failed messages, it did the following :
1) Recognised the handsfree, but refused to output sound through it
2) Some of the menus started missing letters
3) Started to insist that Opera Mini was actually a game I'd downloaded 2 months before and deleted
4) Finally, it refused to turn on, remaining perpetually on a white screen.

It went to the shop. They reflashed the memory and returned it, seemingly working. 2 days later it was dead again, permanent white screen. I took it back, they ordered a replacement. This arrived on Friday. I charged it and took it home, being too busy to try it out at work. At home, it gave me instant graphical corruption. The Startup Screen had half the letters missing, and it refused to recognise my code. Monday, I took it back. Tuesday, I got another replacement, which is still in use a week later. And the joystick is already dodgy.
