The first News Letter in 2012 - and only bad news!

The river is flooding early and the signs are it will be worse than last year.
Because of the high levels of activity in combating the effects of the flooding (improving flood defences, etc), and interruptions to power supplies, information is sparse.

Alas, due entirely to local politics, combined with the early start of the flood season, the work of laying the pipeline, was delayed & could not be completed before the floods came.

So this News Letter is very brief - as you see!
I will however have an on-the-spot ‘reporter’ at n’Kwazi in February and I will be able to give you a comprehensive update next month.

The Thermometer shows the status at 31.12.2011.

For now I just want to thank everyone for their help & support in 2011.

Dear Friends,
With your help we were able to buy new school clothes for many learners. Most children are very careful with their school uniforms. They immediately change their clothes after school.
Of course, sometimes a child remains with his clothes hanging on a thorn bush. Many kids have a broken shoe after a year of wearing. As long as possible, the school clothes that became too small are passed to the younger kids n the family. In October, we visited several orphans families. Although we were traveling mostly on Saturdays and Sundays, we usually only found a few family members at home. Because of the intense heat, it was usually about 40 ° C, many residents went to the river. We handed out to the families some food, blankets, soap and body cream.
In addition, we distributed a lot of used clothes. The tourists gave it to the lodge as a donation and other sponsors sent it to us by parcel. We thank you on behalf of all residents of Mayana for this magnificent donation.
End of October in the preschool we have invited to the popular children's party with cake and ice. Through donations and partly by us, we were able to give all the kids in preschool a new pair of jeans or a new t-shirt.
Since 2010, the donations went back for the monthly maize meal action for orphan families. As a result of our discussions, we therefore decided to reduce the number of assisted families with maize meal from 40 to 13: Marcus was able to register the orphans for some families so they can attend school for free. Some orphaned children are now adults. They can help themselves and their family. The orphans of Haininga's family, for example, who are registered for the free school, learn very hard. Imelda got a good exam of grade 12. Now she begun her study as a nurse in Rundu. This makes us proud.
A sponsor makes it possible that the deaf Johannes Kangowa can go to special school and hostel in Rundu. In the same family, another sponsor has agreed to promote its former pre-school child in the future. Gellasius starts in January 2012 in grade 2.
Also other sponsors of preschoolers want to continue to support "their children". We report about it in the next newsletter.

Durch Eure Hilfe konnten wir für viele Schüler neue Schulkleidungen kaufen. Die meisten Kinder gehen sehr sorgsam mit ihrer Schulkleidung um. Sie ziehen sich sofort nach der Schule zu Hause um. Natürlich bleibt auch einmal ein Kind mit seiner Kleidung am Dornbusch hängen. Bei manchem
Jungen hat sich nach einem Jahr Tragen die Schuhsohle gelöst. Solange wie möglich wird die ausgewachsene und zum Teil notdürftig geflickte Schulkleidung an die kleineren Kinder weitergegeben.
Im Oktober besuchten wir (das sind Iris aus München und Ingrid aus Chemnitz) mehrere Waisenfamilien. Obwohl wir hauptsächlich samstags und sonntags unterwegs waren, haben wir meist nur wenige Familienmitglieder zu Hause angetroffen. Wegen der großen Hitze, es war meist über 40 °C, hielten sich viele Anwohner am Fluss auf. Wir verteilten an die Familien Nahrungsmittel, Decken, Seife und Körpercreme.
Außerdem verteilten wir viele gebrauchte Kleidungsstücke, die zum einen Touristen in der Lodge als Spende zurückließen und zum anderen Sponsoren per Post an uns sandten. Wir danken im Namen aller Bewohner von Mayana für diese großartigen Spenden. In der Vorschule haben wir Ende Oktober zur beliebten Kinderparty mit Geburtstagskuchen und Eis eingeladen. Durch Spenden und teils durch uns dazugekauft, konnten wir allen Schülern in der Vorschule eine neue Jeans oder ein neues T-Shirt mit nach Hause geben.
Seit 2010 gingen die Spendeneingänge für die monatliche Maismehlaktion für die Waisenfamilien zurück. Im Ergebnis unserer Beratungen entschieden wir deshalb, die Anzahl der mit Maismehl unterstützten Familien von ehemals 40 auf 13 zu reduzieren:! Marcus konnte für einige Familien die Waisenkinder für den freien Schulbesuch registrieren lassen. Einige Waisenkinder sind inzwischen erwachsen. Sie sollen selbst am Broterwerb mit helfen. Die Waisenkinder von Haininga's Familie zum Beispiel, die für den freien Schulbesuch registriert sind, lernen sehr fleißig. Imelda hat ein gutes Examen der 12. Klasse abgelegt und nun die Ausbildung zur Krankenschwester in Rundu begonnen. Das macht uns stolz.!
Ein Sponsor ermöglicht dem gehörlosen Johannes Kangowa den Schul- und Internatsbesuch in Rundu. In gleicher
Familie hat sich ein weiterer Sponsor bereiterklärt, sein ehemaliges Vorschulkind auch zukünftig zu fördern. Gellasius wird ab Januar die 2. Klasse besuchen.!Noch weitere Paten ehemaliger Vorschüler wollen im kommenden Jahr erneut „ihre Kinder“ unterstützen. Darüber berichten wir im nächsten Newsletter.

Dear Friends,

A generous donation of hand knitted baby sweaters was distributed to mothers with babies this month. The sweaters were produced as part of a prison project and we are very grateful for this donation to Yvonne Botes.
From this developed the idea to create „baby bags“. A canvas bag that includes a small blanket from the “Sit and Knit” project and some baby clothes. The first bagshave already been completed.

The children of the Mayana Pre-School were delighted to open their new playground. We have moved the goals and netball poles as well as the see saw from the destroyed N’Kwazi Pre-School. A new equipment could be added thanks to a donation from family Scholtz.

The new ablution block was nearly opened. The pipes only must connected. A big step towards completion of the schools requirements. We thank you all for your generous donations.

Diesen Monat konnten wir eine großzügige Spende von handgestrickten Baby Pullovern an Mütter mit Säuglingen verteilen. Die Pullover wurden im Rahmen eines Projekts in Frauengefängnissen gemacht und erreichten uns durch die Vermittlung von Yvonne Botes. Daraus entwickelte sich die Idee “Baby Taschen” zu richten. Eine Stofftasche mit einer Decke aus unserem „Sit and Knit“ Projekt und Babykleidung. Die ersten Taschen sind bereits fertig gepackt.

Die Kinder der Mayana Pre-School waren begeistert über ihren neuen Spielplatz. Wir haben die Fußballtore und Netzballkörbe sowie die Wippe von der zerstörten N’Kwazi Vorschule umgesiedelt. Dank einer Spende von Familie Scholtz konnte ein weiteres Spielgerät hinzugefügt werden.

Der neue Toiletten- und Duschblock ist bis auf die Außenanschlüsse und den äußeren Farbanstrich fertig. Ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg der Erfüllung der Anforderungen für eine Schule. Wir danken für Ihre großartigen Spenden.

The Mayana Community Water Project (MCWP)

Better late than never! And a word of explanation. In mid-July Iris & I moved apartments here in Munich. We lost our Internet & Phone lines for some 6 weeks And are only now recovering from the shock!

The good news is that our readers have been VERY active on behalf of the MCWP and those who know (either directly by their visits to n’Kwazi Lodge or through the medium of the various news letters, blogs, facebook, twitter, etc) about the excellent work done by Marcus and Joseph for the Mayana Community have responded magnificently.

From June – August we received donations totalling 3,715 EURO = N$ 35,300!

My very special and heartfelt thanks to Mr.  and Mrs. de Boer from Holland that visited Kwazi Lodge in October 2008; Steve in Bochum (we visited n’Kwazi at the same time in November 2010) who has, together with his girlfriend Alice, also contributed generously to the work of the Mpora Foundation, and
Jim from Munich, who made a quite spontaneous donation. And last, but by no means least, Iris & I celebrated our 120th Birthdays this year and so we asked my family to donate to MCWP instead of buying us presents – nearly 600 EURO was raised!!

All are now officially enrolled in the ‘MCWP Donor’s Hall of Fame’

YOU COULD BE THE NEXT!

As I write I already know of a further 1,000 EURO and more which will be added to the project in the coming weeks – Thanks to you all!

In October Iris & I will pay our annual visit to n’Kwazi. I hope to have much more to report when we get back!

n’Kwazi Newsletter July 2011

Dear Friends,

In the month of July the nights and the mornings are freezing cold therefore we have continued to distribute donated clothes and hand knitted blankets to our poorest families.
This month we had 3 groups that worked on the projects. One group of youngster came from the USA. They worked together with the local youth group to complete the ablution facilities for the pre- school in Mayana. Working together provided a platform to learn about each -others culture and after 2 weeks some friendships started to develop.

They were followed by a group of students and teacher of the Heidelberg International School in connection with Make Change Possible e.V . Their project groups come every year. This year they completed six projects; English and computer course for the teachers of the pre-school, football training for children, a football and netball tournament, games afternoons at Kayengona Combined School, a sports festival for children and the construction of a shelter for a mobile library.

A group of students from England followed. They dug trenches for water pipes and laid the foundation for the new classroom as well as decorated the outside walls of the Mayana Pre- School.

n'Kwazi Newsletter Juli 2011

Liebe Freunde,

Im Juli ist es nachts und morgens eisig kalt, daher haben wir auch in diesem Monat selbstgestrickte Decken, sowie Kleiderspenden an bedürftige Familien verteilt.
Diesen Monat haben 3 Gruppen an Projekten gearbeitet. Eine Gruppe Jugendlicher aus den USA hat mit der örtlichen Jugendgruppe an der Fertigstellung der Toiletten für die Vorschule gearbeitet. Die gemeinsame Arbeit hat das jeweilige Kennenlernen der Kulturen gefördert und nach 2 Wochen sind manche freundschaftliche Bande entstanden.

Darauf folgte eine Gruppe von Schülern und Lehrern der Heidelberg International School die durch den Verein Make Change Possible e.V organisiert ist, der jährlich hier tätig ist. Sie haben dieses Jahr in eigener Regie sechs Projekte durchgeführt: Englisch und Computerkurs für die Lehrerinnen der Vorschule, Fußball Training für Kinder, ein Turnier für die Fußball und Netzball Teams, Spielenachmittage an der Kayengona Combined School, ein Sportfest für Kinder und den Bau eines Unterstands für die mobile Bücherei.

Es folgte eine Gruppe Schüler aus England. Sie haben Gräben für die Wasserleitungen ausgehoben, das Fundament für den neuen Klassenraum gelegt und die Außenwände der Vorschule in Mayana dekoriert.

Zwei freiwillige Helfer aus Deutschland, Marion und Kristina, haben ein Sportfest an der Kayengona Combined School organisiert mit den Disziplinen Weitwurf, Weitsprung,
100 und 800 Meterlauf, sowie ein Fußball- und Netzball Turnier.
