Happy New Year!

It has been a while (again) since I had to say something important enough to make a post wink Anyway, a new year should be reason enough to at least share some wishes: May you all have a great year and stay healthy smile

All the best

Ha det bra Jon!

I just heard, that Jon won't be with Opera anymore after next week. Mr Opera will resign over some different views about the future of Opera with board and management (more here).

Anyway, he'll still be the face of the company with the red O for me. Thanks for having and developing the idea of this hell of a browser. You've gone a long and hard way but your idea got millions of fans all over the world (still would deserve to be more anyway wink ).

All the best for your future ideas and plans and thank you very much!

Check out Jon's mailbox

Dear Oprah,

I am writing to you because i saw your show last week, and it featured a man who lost his dog several years ago. I have a similar experience but with my cat. Well, with what used to be my cat. Now it is not my cat anymore. Complicated story. If you would like me to come on the show i would love to do it.

I love you Oprah!

Melissa

have fun!

Eyjafjallajökull

The Icelandic volcano is keeping the air traffic down and people stuck for a couple of days now. But despite it's negative effects it's also a huge natural spectacle. See this photo for instance. Just amazing, huh?

mp3 & music and can you tell the difference between good and bad?

, , ,

I really love music. I have it everywhere and I tend to not leave the house without my phone with GB of music on it and I so spend hours listening to it every day.
I use mp3 files since back in the 1990s. While the average quality started with 128kbit - which has been described as 'nearly CD-quality' - this has never been enough for me. I quickly switched to either 192kbit or ogg files (way better but due to incompatibility I had to focus on mp3 sad ).

After mp3 files became widely available online and the web speed increased daily, many people just turned away from CDs and bought mp3 player and files.
I just came across an article about the decrease of quality of hearing today and with it a test to hear the difference between the bad and the 'good' mp3 quality (128kbit compared to 320kbit). It looks like not even half of the people can tell, which is the better one. I tried, listened to each file twice and I ended being disappointed in myself because there is just one single second, where I could really tell, which testfile is the 320kbit one. Maybe it's due to my headphones. Maybe it's due to listening to online radio to much lately. sad

But test yourself: "Do 320kbps mp3 files really sound better? Take the test!"

Did you hear the difference? Did you pick the right one?

Winter Photo Contest

, , , ...

Opera is looking for the best winter photo and so they came up with a small competition. And as I got a couple of nice shots I thought I should take part in this race. The only question is which picture I should pick? You can find the poll in the sidebar (on the right side of this page, scroll down a bit) and the photos I think might be the best ones I have are here...

Concerning Security of Internet Browsers

, , ,

Security is a big thing, especially when it comes to Internet, online banking, online shopping etc. And the best weapon against losing data is a protective operating system, a safe anti virus software and ... a secure Internet browser!

Microsoft showed again these days, that they can't help users with any of that. Trying to provide everything possible they miss to protect the people - who trust them with what they are doing.
And because there is a huge security leak, which has been made public during the last days, there is e.g. already a warning over using Internet Explorer from the German Government or also from the French CERTA.

The good thing is that USERS do have a chance to help them selfs cause they do HAVE A CHOICE! Picking one or two of the alternative browsers (well, I prefer Opera for years now, but feel free to fill in whatever browser you prefer [as long as it's got a red O wink]) makes life easier, cause your data is safe (again). And besides that they offer innovations and ideas making surfing the web easier.

The highest barrier nowadays IME is not, that people wouldn't know about alternatives. But they still think it doesn't make a difference which browser they use (as long as "the one" is working). Let me tell you, IT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND IT IS REALLY EASY TO SWITCH! So start today and enjoy the free web with your free choice to pick another free browser with a lot of free useful things you didn't know about but don't want to miss anymore wink
