if i'd know what to say...

thobi's page :)

why opera? sohalt!

,

Most of you know, that I'm a huge fan of Opera since I came across it in 2001. Anyone else seem to have missed my bunch of blog posts about Opera, myself being MyOpera "Member of the Week" :star:, being part of the MyOpera community page or visiting the Opera headquarter  or just has never tried to talk with me about computer :D But hey, no problem, just go ahead reading or contact me! :headbang:

With the release of the latest Opera 10 desktop browser there came up a lot of discussion about "Why should I use Opera? I already have IE/FF/Safari/...".
Well, there is no perfect answer to this question, but there are a lot of reasons why I really use Opera 10 even if it is - like everything else - not up to 100% perfect. But it is damn close!

I already posted my reasons for why I'm using Opera as my browser of choice in June 2008. But since it's a while ago, I think I might do a slight update.

A short introduction to Opera Software: The Opera desktop browser v1.0 dates back to April 1995 (Netscape dates back to October 1994 but stopped being supported in 2008. MS Internet Explorer also started in 1995 (August) and was combined with Windows with v4.0 in 1998). So it's currently the oldest browser available.
Opera Software is a Norwegian company, and has its headquarter is situated in Oslo. Opera Software was founded as an independent company on August 30, 1995 by Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner and Geir Ivarsøy.

Enough history for the moment. Let's focus now on the main points of Opera's desktop browser.

Opera 10 is available since 1st of September for all major operating systems/platforms like MS Windows, Linux, MacOS, FreeBSD and Solaris :eyes:

It's new main features are:
  • Exclusive Opera Turbo compression boosts slow connection speeds
  • Innovative visual tabs displays Web sites in thumbnails
  • Intuitive, sleek design
  • Easy-to-personalize Speed Dial visual bookmarks
  • Inline spell checker

Already introduced features in earlier versions:
  • Opera Link to synchronize your Speed Dial, bookmarks, notes and other useful browser data.
  • Password Manager to store usernames and passwords, so they will be at your fingertips.
  • Web services integration to use Web mail and online Feed readers as your default clients.
  • Mouse gestures to be able to perform certain movements with the mouse to provide quick access to frequently performed operations.
  • Sessions which enable you to save a collection of open tabs, or start with the pages you had open when Opera was last closed.
  • Reopen closed tabs if you accidentally closed it, even some hours ago.
  • Opera Mail to access, organize and search all of your e-mail with the fastest mail client available.
  • Quick Find to search the full text from any Web site you visit.
  • Feed Preview in a clean, multiple-column layout before subscribing to it with the integrated RSS-reader

For more detailed information on the single features, just head to opera.com!

So this might sound also interesting to you, but still didn't convince you? Well, let's try to show you my POV.

Let me start with quoting myself from back in June 2008:

  • I came across Opera as there has been a version 6.xx
  • I always have 3 browser windows with currently a total sum of 34 tabs running and thanks to the possibility to save sessions they always come up when starting Opera (see pictures at the end of the text)
  • I like the tabbar at the bottom because there is also the Windows taskbar
  • I don't need a Google search-field because I use to type "g search term" (and lots of other search-features in the same way - like a couple of dictionaries, ebay, wikipedia etc  )
  • I cannot live without the mouse gestures which is kind of handy  or the keyboard shortcuts (like ctrl+tab to switch tabs, ctrl+t for a new tab, ctrl+w to close a tab or ctrl+q to quit opera  )
  • I used the shortcuts - like digits (1, 2, 3 etc) - long before they became "in" with Speed Dial
  • I use and like to use RSS-feeds but I don't use the e-mail-client (because I need a calendar which I synchronize with my SE-mobile phone Nokia mobile phone), Widgets (I started using Widgets lately  ) or the BitTorrent-feature because I have to many of those files always running bug
  • I love Opera Link since the moment it has been included into Opera's snapshots
  • I'm kind of addicted to content-blocking :D
  • I couldn't be without the individual site-preferences to be in control of which site is allowed to open pop-ups or which site isn't allowed to use JavaScript! Homer: Doh!
  • I don't allow pages to "Raise, or move a window to the foreground", "Lower, or move a window to the background", "Intercept the right mouse button", "Hide your address bar"
  • I would have forgotten many usernames and passwords if there would be no Wand-function
  • I'm running out of space on my.opera.com although they offer 300 mb for free to everybody :yikes: (changed to 1 gb )
  • I love Opera!

So what has changed since then?

Opera introduced Opera Turbo, which allows you to have a nearly broadband like speed on slower connections (like public WiFi-spots) by compressing the page and shrink pictures. You can enable this feature either manually or let Opera determine if you are using a slow or a fast connection by itself and have Opera Turbo enabled/disabled automatically.

With Opera 10 they introduced a resizable visible tab bar. Drag the handle underneath the tabs to reveal thumbnails of your open Web pages (or just double-click it).
Further Jon Hicks has created a whole new look for Opera 10 which looks really smooth

Have you ever forgotten the page where you found that great article or that perfect gift? When using Opera's, the browser remembers not only the titles and addresses, but also the actual content of the Web pages you visit. So you just need to remember some phrases and Opera does the rest by hunting your browsing history!

You can now customize your Speed Dial to fit your own needs. Click the Configure Speed Dial button and choose from 4 to 25 favorite Web sites for quick access every time you open a new tab (or get even more buttons by tweaking the ini-files manually ). You can also add a custom background so that you feel right at home.

Not to forget the inline spell checker. Write freely in your Facebook wall, blog, or Web mail. Opera 10 underlines any misspelled words, so you can express yourself without reservation. By using the popular Hunspell dictionary format, you will always have the most complete and updated list of all languages. Easily add new languages/dictionaries with some clicks and switch between them.

Further Opera has features, I already mentioned in my list above like the following.

Quick and customizable Web search
Get quick access to Google, eBay, Amazon and more with the search field in the upper right corner. Or, for even quicker searching, search directly in the address bar using built-in and customizable keywords. For example, type "w Opera" in the address bar to search for “Opera” with Wikipedia. You can also create your own Web search from any search field on the Internet, simply by right clicking on a search field and choosing “Create Search”.

Tabs and sessions
Opera is very light on your computer, so it's possible to have many tabs open at once. Drag and drop tabs around to change their order, or get a preview pausing over them with your mouse. You can even save a session of tabs for later, making it easy to pick up where you left off.

Mouse gestures
With Opera you can navigate the Web with your mouse. A mouse gesture is performed while clicking and holding the right mouse button and moving the mouse in an easy pattern. Perform movements with the mouse to access well-known functions such as Back, Forward and Open New Tab. As with Opera's keyboard shortcuts, mouse gestures are fully customizable, so you can tailor them any way you want.

Zoom and Fit to width
Is it difficult to read the content on a page? Use Opera's Zoom button in the lower right corner to resize Web pages. If the page is too wide for your screen, simply hit "Fit to Width" and Opera will resize the Web page so you avoid horizontal scrolling.

Content blocking
Block images, pop-ups, and plug-ins you don't want . Right-click and choose "Block content" to selectively disable annoying elements. To make Web pages load faster, or to avoid offensive content, temporarily turn off images by pressing the image button. In Opera, smart pop-up blocking is turned on by default.

Well, that's not everything, but it's already a lot and it's what I use and really don't want to miss again.

Finally some tweaks to use with Opera (at least on Windows, but with MacOS you should have nearly the same settings and combinations; but feel free to tell me, if I'm wrong  ):

Use the keyboard to surf the web!
Press CTRL+T to open a new tab instead of touching your mouse!
Use CTRL+W to close the tab again.
Use CTRL+L to hit the address-bar and type "g search term" to search with google just in less than 5 seconds!
Press CTRL+1 to go to the link on your first Speed Dial, CTRL+5 instead of opening a new tab and heading to button number 5
CTRL+left cursor button goes back to the last page, CTRL+right cursor button goes to the "next" page (supported by e.g. Google) instead of clicking onto the "next page" link (so called "Fast Forward")

Instead of using the cursor-buttons you can also use the mouse.
Hold down the right mouse button and move the mouse to the left and you will end up on the last page visited. Do the Fast Forward by holding down the right mouse button and move the mouse to the right.
Or even easier: Hold down the right mouse button and press the left mouse button. On releasing both buttons you are back on the last page visited. Holding down the left and pressing the right mouse button "Fast Forwards" you

Nickname your bookmarks!
By doing that you can just enter the nickname into the address-bar and Opera knows where to go. Bookmark translate.google.com, nickname it translate and you are there immediately. Or bookmark Facebook with the nickname FB, your blog, newspaper...

Synchronize your bookmarks by using Opera Link!
So you have them available via http://link.opera.com from anywhere even if you don't have access to your Opera browser as also you are able to synchronize your desktop browsers among each other and also with your mobile Opera browser.

Hopefully I could convince you to at least give it a try and/or to play around with it a bit. Feel free to leave some comments and share your opinion. For problems you might head the forums.
More tips&tricks are available e.g. at opera.com and at Tamil's blog. You can also customize your Opera browser and add some panels!

So, go ahead and download Opera 10 and have fun!

Edit: And for your mobile phone just try Opera Mini 5. See this blog post for more info.

Oh oh, I love it when Opera fans talk about their favorite browser. It's not that I like Opera but I LOVE OPERA. Hehehe
P/s: This entry is so cool.

:D thx a lot

Tabmartel 6. September 2009, 08:21

Good post. Opera is my browser of choice simply because it is close to 100%
I appreciate the quick loading time and the all around functionality. I love to customise and Opera also delivers here.

Firefox is also customisable but lacks the online security that Opera is meticulous about.

IE 8 just plain sucks. I have experienced nothing but crashes with IE8 and the weekly security patches leave me feeling uneasy about using it for anything confidential. No matter what MS does IE always seems to have holes in it..I trust Opera.

thobi 6. September 2009, 08:34

thanks for your post tab

yep, opera is just fine (as "mentioned" above :D). also FF isn't that bad. i use it from time to time too. but it starts slowly and it's always naked. you have to find plugins to make it comfortable and with every update you risk your plugins to be not compatible. :frown:

and IE? still have v6 on my winxp-pc. and why upgrade if you don't use it :D just makes the whole pc slower :frown:

Tabmartel 6. September 2009, 08:59

6 was a joke.

thobi 6. September 2009, 12:37

no, no joke. why should i do an upgrade? makes everything just even worse :D

Tabmartel 6. September 2009, 12:48

7 was better than 6..but if the only thing you are using IE for is OS updates..no need for you to go to 7.

Speaking of seven..have you had a chance to try it?

thobi 6. September 2009, 13:01

uh, don't let us discuss here about IE
windows runs 4sure faster with v6 than v7
and what else should i use IE for? :D

Tabmartel 6. September 2009, 16:14

The very same thing I use it for....nothing.

To me it is easy... I use Opera since Version 4... and bought Versions 5-8.
The reason? It's the only browser that always did what I wanted it to do and still does. It's slender, it's fast, it's stable and reliable... and always cutting-edge! I would rather live without my mobile phone than without my dearest browser...

I  Opera.

besides... you missed to mention Opera Dragonfly and Opera Unite!

thobi 20. November 2009, 22:41

well, i don't know opera dragonfly and opera unite is nice, but well... we'll see
