Some mistakes to the first control and again to control 6,12 and 15. Making the first leg in Relay wasn't the best choice for me...
After the Relay it was time to the 1st Beer Orienteering Relay.
Teams of 2 persons and 8 beers.
Mass start to the fist element. The first element had to drink one beer and do a small course, when he arrived, the second element had to do the same, than more one beer and 1 course for each one. After complete 4 courses for team, they had to drink more one beer, run around a football camp and drink more 1 beer. The first team to complete won.
I made team with Jorge Fortunato but our result wasn´t really good. Jorge drinks very slow... I finish the four heats in 1st ;P

Than WUOC in Estonia and 6 days of France will be waiting for me...

After Swedish Camp: Absolute National Champion

OK Klemmingen from Gesta is my new orienteering club in Sweden!
From the 8 to 13th of May I went to Sweden where I trained orienteering a lot. Swedish terrains and cartography are very different from Portugal. This was really good to start understanding what I will find in JWOC this year.

The Swedish Camps had finished and I was really tired however Absolute National Championship was coming.
From 22nd to 25th of May took place in Gerês (North of Portugal) the 4 days of Minho and in the last 2 days was the Absolute National Championship. Qualification on Saturday and Final on Sunday.

On Saturday I made the Final without big problems, however I did 2 big mistakes who make me feel unsafe to the Final.

Sunday was my day, but I didn´t know it! I remember my last words before the start! I said: "Everything goes wrong with me"
I start the competitions slow not to make big mistakes. When I was coming to the control 8 I saw Celso (HE runner that start 6' before me) coming to control 9 and I feel that it was my opportunity to catch him.
In control 13 Pedro Nogueira (HE runner) lost time and we caught him. In this moment I felt that was possible for me to win the race but quickly I big problem came up: my compass disappeared! I only had in my hand the base.
We went together until the final of the course. I finished the race with the best time and then was time to wait to see what the others guys could do. I had also the best time in the spectators control, but I had lost about 3' after this control, however the other guys also lost time and I won the race!

It was not enough!!!

After some time without competitions I was completely focus to do a nice Relay and Long Distance Championships.
In Thursday was held the Portuguese National Relay Championship. This year I ran in a senior team by my Portuguese club and I was really motivated.
The terrain was not nice because it was very dirty and the options were almost through paths. I lost about 4' minutes in the 2nd control because it was not in the right place!:furious: However there was a worst thing! My team was disqualified because the 2nd guy miss one control! :frown:

Friday was the day to relax! I did a sprint race but slowly because it was not important!

On Saturday, in the same map of the relay, took place a middle distance race (Portuguese o-league).
I won this race however the terrain and the course was unpleasant and the weather was very hot. To make things worse, the 17th control was missing in the terrain and I finished the race bleeding from the nose!

After so many things, Sunday was the day of the Long Distance Championship. 25 controls, 10,9 km and 380 of climb was waiting for me.
I started with a good feeling however the 9th control made me lose the race. In this control I lost about 4' minutes to my opponents. After this I decided to forget what happened and do my best until the final. And so after this I made a perfect race however it was not enough and I lost the title by 1' 17". I completed the race in 1h 09' 36". It was really disappointing for me.

This week I will go to Sweden where I will train with my Swedish club, OK Klemmingen from Gnesta!
JWOC is arriving and I´m in a nice place to be a part of the national team for JWOC!

Sprint and Middle distance National Championships

Last weekend (8-9/03/2008) took place in Castelo de Vide the Portuguese Sprint and Middle Distance National Championships.

My weekend started on friday with two trainings in two differents maps in the region that had been used in a competition last year.
The Sprint Championship was composed by two races: in the morning in florest and in the afthernoon urban in Castelo de Vide village.

For me this was a good competition, however in the morning I did one big mistake: the two first controls were very easy and the third was a litle bit more dificult, but I didn't understand it and take a bad direction who made me loose about 2 minutes
In afthernoon the race was almost perfect and I enjoy it very much.

The Middle Distance Championship was very disappointing for me. I start the race very concentrated however in the 7th control a disaster happened. I take a bad direction and when I was near ta little wall I saw the rocks and I thought that I was on the rocks below that actually I was. After I saw the control 9 and finally I understood that I was wrong. I know where I was but my brain stopped and I tried to find myself.
Then my brain started to work and I found the control. All this story made me loose more than 2 minutes. However the story doesn´t end here.
To the 11th control I lost more seconds because there was one wall that wasn't represented in the map. To 12th control I tried to recover some lost time, however I lost more than 1 minute.
Until the end of the course I didn't make more mistakes like those, only a small mistake to the 19th control.

After the competition I went to Leiria where there were 4 latvian guys. Two of them from OK Klemmingen.
Ok Klemmingen is my new club in Sweden... I will go to Sweden in May to prepare myself to he JWOC '08 in Sweden...It is my biggest goal this year.

Big weekend at Évora - 119 controls...

Taking part of a small competition that happened in Arraiolos (Évora), S. Pedro da Gafanhoeira was the host place of o-weekend from 22 to 25 of February 2008.

Alentejo is always a good place to do orienteering and the National Championships of Sprint and Middle distance will be in similar terrain of these trainings. These were some of the reasons that make me choose this place.

On Friday (22/02/2008) I and an O-friend arrived at Arraiolos where would be at 18H a training of S. Pedro da Gafanhoeira Orienteering Club headed by Tiago Aires and Raquel Costa.
I did with them an Indoor Training. Orienteering simulation and indoor courses. After this, we run in S. Pedro da Gafanhoeira.

On Saturday (23/02/2008) was the D-day. 3 trainings in a very changeling maps, São Bartolomeu de Outeiro II, São Bartolomeu de Outeiro IV and Évora City.
In the morning, after some problems to find the Start, we start the training under the gaze of many cows.
After lunch we went to São Bartolomeu IV where we training until the night.
In the night we did a sprint in Évora, was a changeling map with a very nice course.

On Sunday (24/02/2008) was the day of the competition.
In the morning, in a map called "Pastaneira" I did a nice race despite the tiredness. My big mistake was to control 11 where I lost some seconds in the control zone because I did not see the control at the first time I attacked him.
After lunch, in the village of S. Pedro da Gafanhoeira happened a sprint race.
I did this course two times because in the first time I was jump 8 controls :yikes: and I was very angry with myself.
In the second time I enjoy the race and I did a nice race. And no problems because I was there to training, no for compete.

On Monday (25/02/2008) was the day to return at home, however there was still time for one more training. This time was chosen the map called "Esbarrondadouro" or knowed in Portugal by "São Bento de Castriz". A nice map, different from the others because was more dirty.

Finally I want to say thank you to Tiago Aires and Raquel Costa for receive us at your home, the way how they receive us, the nice competition and the others trainings.

Fantastic 'O' week

My last week, from 2 to 10 of February, was totally dedicated to Orienteering.
POM (Portugal 'O' Meeting) in region of Algarve was a nice surprise for me, special the final qualification, 2nd place after 4 days of competition.

First day (02/02/2008)- The race took place in Tavira on a map a little dirty.
For me terrain was not very interesting because the progression in terrain was very difficult and not so technical to a Middle Dstance race.

Scond and third day (03-04/02/2008) - In the map called "Pontal" near Faro took place two Long Distance competitions.
I enjoy very much the 3rd day because the course was better than the day before. It apply much more to a precise orienteering. In this day I did less mistakes and I got a better result. In the competition of the 2nd day I did many mistakes.

POM's last day (05/02/2008) - Vila Real de Santo António was the host village of POM's last day. This map was really challenging. The terrain was pine forest with many little trees that decreased the visibility and required a very precise orienteering. This was certainly the best day of POM. I won this final day.

Refresh days (06-08/02/2008)
In these 3 days I went to Leiria and did trainnings there.
First refresh day was only to do small slow running with map in forest.
On Thursday I did a fartleek training with map. Was a very nice trainning. In the map here is single arrow to do slow and here is double arrow to do in maximum speed.
On Friday was the day to do the model event in Cantanhede.

I Troféu Internacional de Cantanhede (9-10/02/2008)
This weekend was really challenging. Congratulations to ORI-Estarreja for this excellent event.
First day was a Middle Distance where the precision orienteering was the main requirement.
In this course I did not make big mistakes and I was the best Portuguese runner.
Second day was really disappointing for me. The Long Distance race makes me do many mistakes.
After middle of the race I was really tired and I could not concentrate myself. In general I lost about 5 minutes between hesitations and mistakes. On the final I was 5th in the competition.
