Got the Right Attitude ?

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 4:4-8

Key verse: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians4:8).

Geneticists have discovered long ago that outward attributes in plants and animals are coded in genes, which form the basis for those expressions such as gender and colour. While those traits are considered invariable, scientists also observed that some traits are influenced by the environment.

Researchers have, however, identified proper corrective or preventive measures against the manifestation of undesirable attributes. In agronomy, fertilizers come in handy to help crops grow faster and increase yield; pesticides are used to destroy ravaging pests and preserve the crops while in the field. And a lot of weeding is done to prevent the undesirable plants from crowding out the favourite crops.

In animal science and veterinary practices, animal varieties are bred to withstand certain unfavourable circumstances. Some breeds are produced to increase yield as in dairy cattle and layer chickens. Improved feeding rations are formulated to hasten growth, increase the body size and weight as well as increase resistance to diseases in addition to programmed regimes of vaccination and medication. All these are conscious steps towards helping the genes achieve the best of performance.

What fruit do you hope to bear as a believer? What steps are you taking to prime your genes spiritually and what nourishment are you giving your soul in order to bear the desired fruit? Are you faithful to your spiritual nourishment, vaccination and medication? How fertile is the ground of your heart? With what and how do you cultivate it?

Today’s passage has set forth the perfect prescription for a positive mental attitude, namely: rejoicing always, a lifestyle of moderation, freedom from all anxiety, prayerfulness, and thinking whole some and noble thoughts. Peace eludes those who do not prime their spiritual lives this way. If that describes your experience, change your attitude and see what great difference it makes for your health, well-being and accomplishments.
