TEXT: ISAIAH 30:1-17
Key Verse : “Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin” (Isaiah 30:1).
Life is full of fears and great forebodings. And often this leads us into taking our fate in our own hands. We forge alliances with the great men of the world, seek protection from the powerful and pursue safety in places we consider to be secure. Usually when under pressure, we turn everywhere but to the Lord.
The people of Judah did exactly that, and it was most displeasing to the Lord. They sought advice from everyone but God. They sought power and protection from Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. They would not heed God’s warning that, inviting and attractive as the new alliance they were forming appeared to be, it would bring much harm to them in the future. They had come under the attack of King Sennacherib of Assyria. And in their moment of fear, both they and their king, Hezekiah forgot God. They probably believed they would be better served in the circumstance by making friends with the Egyptians. Some people in Israel even opted to migrate and settle in Egypt. At the same time, they spurned the truth spoken to them by the Prophets of God. They wanted to hear only good news, and thought that the Prophets were speaking too many uncomfortable words. What they did not know was that turning to any source other than God for their safety, was bound to fail.
We should not always seek an easy way out of our problems. For this will lead us to search for comfort, advice and relief from the wrong sources. If we are not careful, we would become so fascinated with the power, influence and prestige of men, leading us to seek direction and guidance in life from sources that are not pleasing to God. Whatever our station in life, we must learn to consult God, ask Him to help us choose what is best and wise, and accept His words even if they appear too bitter to swallow. We must place our confidence in God who has promised not to leave or forsake us.
Thought for the Day : Giving God a chance spurs Him to effect changes.
