Data privacy

First of all, YouWatch is a private project.
I don't have any commercial interest in YouWatch or the data I receive from it.

Location
My location is currently in Germany, so the data security laws of Germany apply. Needless to say, the data security laws of Germany are really strict. (German Data security law in english, pdf)
The location of the server is also in Germany, Berlin. The hoster is Strato AG.

Finances
I only pay monthly fees for the vserver (which hosts youwatch-extension.de). It costs 7,90 EUR per month. Thats really cheap and I can pay this with no problem. I don't need any money from advertisements or selling data. Therefore YouWatch will be absolute add-free and your data is save.

What data do you get from me?
You came here because you are curious what data the Extension sends to the server? No problem, I can show you. Go to the Options Page of YouWatch, scroll down and click on "Expert Options" at the bottom. There you find a log of all data the Extension sends.

At first, it may seem a bit difficult to understand what is send, so I will explain it here in detail.
Firstly said, these are no private data of yours. The Extension only sends aggregated and anonymized data.

• Total: Count of video and sum of duration.
• Tagebuch: Like Total, but split to one day
• Stunden: Count of videos in hours 0 to 23 on a given day
• Stundenduration: Average video duration in hours 0 to 23 on a given day
• Videoblocks: Average video count watched in a row (different minutes of pause between)
• Progress: Percentage of watch-through when video is a given length (1 to >60 minutes)

As you see, there are no private informations, like as which video you looked. The data is all aggregated and anonymized. No one ever (besides you) can match the data to you.

And why are this data collected?
Well, having the data which video is viewed, when and how long, it would be shame not to do some cool statistics. But just showing your own data is a bit boring. Humans like to compete, and so its now possible to compete against all other YouWatch users. But therefore, all the data must be collected to calculate a statistic.

And how long is my data saved at the server?
Your data is saved for 30 days. The statistics are calculated over this 30 days. 1 day would be to little, all data to much. So I choose 30 days. After these 30 days, your data is removed from the database.

I don't like that, how can I disable data collection?
Well, thats sad. But it's your decision not to give your data to me. Go to the Options Page of YouWatch, scroll to "Social Stats" and remove the check mark.
Please notice that already send data can not be removed from the server (prior than the 30 days limit) because its all anonymized and I can not figure out which data belongs to you.
