Obama Obama Obama!
Yes, we have a new president of the United States of America! Let me make it clear that I wholly embrace the end of the conservative Bush regime and fully welcome the start of a more liberal era. I'm looking forward what Obama has in store for this country. I have nothing against Barack Obama himself; but the Obama mania has just been too much as of late.
Media coverage is overly saturated with news of not only the inauguration itself, but the preceding events and of the millions of people trying desperately to be a part of this "historic event."
But what makes it so historic?
Is it because he is the first African-American to be president?
Or is it because he is the first non-fully-white president? (No doubt that this is still news to some.)
Or is it because he is from Hawaii? Yes, the local media has pushed this aspect as heavily as the racial angle.
What I find ironic is that the more that race and locale (& culture) contribute to Obama's historic status now, the more one has to wonder how much those issues factored in voters' minds three months ago. Would it be too cynical to think that it did? Too naive to think that it didn't?
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." -Martin Luther King, Jr
This has been proclaimed a historic event mainly because of the color of Obama's skin, not because of the content of his character. Hopefully, to everyone's benefit, one day Obama will be remembered less for the color of his skin, but more for his achievements during his presidency. It's evident that the day still hasn't yet come when skin color doesn't matter, but perhaps this Obamania is a great step forward to that day.
