wow, food, breakfast, eating
Today, I have toasted wheat bread, but no jams, jellies, or butters -- but I do have a lowfat Meadow Gold blueberry yogurt. I never would have thought that quickly dipping pieces of toast into yogurt would be so delicious. It still has the crispiness of the toast, yet is not dry, and the sweet-but-tangy yogurt sets this apart from many overly sweet jams.
The best thing is that it's simple and fun to eat.

rant, games, wow
Quick note...played for a few hours last night (and one must play it at night)...WOW. Bioshock rocks. One of best -- if not THE best -- games that I've played. That says a lot, as I usually prefer 3rd person views instead of 1st person.
quick rant...Opera Mini 4 beta fails to "Add Post" correctly on my phone. Yet, I keep on forgetting to use Opera Mini 3 (prob. b/c OM4beta is so much more usable?) Yes, lost a few posts that way.

lunch, wow

Lunch: leftover Bertolli pastas. Yes, pasta
s, as it was a combination of leftover Meatballs Pomodoro & Penne from Sunday night and Chicken Parmigiana & Penne from last night.
Bertolli pastas: good? Yes! This is their "Dinner for two" line of pre-packaged pastas. The convenience factor is really high, as it's heat-and-serve at its simplest: dump entire contents of package into a skillet, stir once while heating, and serve. There's no separate package of sauces to mix in or additional ingredients needed as in other brands of pre-package pasta meals. The sauce in Bertolli's pasta comes in the form of inch-long blocks so that it mixes evenly with the pasta as it thaws. The quality of the meals themselves are pretty good. So far we've had about six different varieties, and they've all scored well in flavor (good tasting sauces and ingredients) and pasta quality (al dente and no clumping problems). The most problematic one was probably the Chicken Parmigiana from last night. The mozzarella tended to stick together and onto the stirring spoon.
Bertolli's pasta gets a nice thumbs up from me. The only downside to it is that it's priced to be a sale-only purchase (about $7 for a 24 oz bag from Safeway). The little premium is worth it when feeling lazy

wow, eating, lunch, sucks!
oops, been lax on the lunch posts of late.
yesterday I had something new:

ちりめん (
chirimen Hiroshima-rai?)It's a mix of furikake and little tiny fishes. Sharon and I mixed it into our rice for dinner Sunday night and I had enough to bring for lunch on Monday. It's quite a simple meal, but satisfying nonetheless. The flavor was pretty aromatic, but wasn't overpowering -- there was still the sweetness of the rice to enjoy. Definitely would enjoy this again...also, the packaging is so cute. Wow!
for today's lunch, I had instant noodles:

Vina ACECOOK branded NICECOOK Fried Noodles with Tomato Sauce & Pork Flavor. This was on sale at Longs and I wanted to try it out. It's supposed to be eaten dry (drained of the water used to cook the noodles), so I prepared it last night for convenience. Drained, it held together well and didn't get soft overnight -- quite a good sign. The flavor was nothing special though, with the normal oriental flavoring along with rehydrated chives and salted vegetables. I did like that it included packets of chili powder and chili oil (influence of it being a product of Vietnam?)
What I was most disappointed in was the blatant false packaging. Tomato & Pork Flavoring my ass! All I got was normal instant saimin...it's much like another brand my sisters and I ate
raw unsoftened as children (like crispy noodle chips). Anyway, there was no hint of tomato nor pork flavour at all. What's more, the noodles didn't look anything like in the picture. Next time I'm in the store I'll try to check the ingredients again...though these imported products don't have very trustworthy labeling.

oh yeah, I had also purchased a Seafood flavoured version too. Anyone want to bet that it's exactly the same as the Tomato & Pork? Vina ACECOOK brand sucks!

tv, anime, wow
Just watched an episode of
Flag and I'm loving it already. Very simplistic summary: it's an anime about a photojournalist as she follows a UN mission to recover a Flag that's become a symbol of peace. That by itself isn't very interesting, but what drew me in was the way that the story is delivered.

Most of it is shown through dramatic stills and the viewfinder of a camera. Sounds like a gimmick, but it's very refreshing to see things in this view. What's nice is that the creators paid a lot of attention to details and included as many things possible to make you feel as if you are holding the camera. Very neat.

The still shots are nicely done as well. It's like flipping through a documentary photo album. Last, but not least, the music is very apt for the show, with slow regional music to complete the mood.
I found a
site that has some streaming video which shows what the anime is like. Scroll down to the section with "500K" and "1M" links. I recommend the one titled "Document of Flag," as it best shows what Flag is like.

eating, wow

Of all things on a Saturday night to watch, what did I see? The 2006 Bratwurst Eating competition on ESPN. Amazing. It was simply amazing. I got to see
Takeru Kobayashi (小林尊) smash yet another record by eating
58 Bratwursts in 10 minutes. It's unbelievable how fast and how much such a tiny guy can eat. Those grilled sausages weren't small either -- they're 4 to a pound. 58 makes 14.5 pounds...meaning he ate nearly 1.5 pounds of meat per minute! I guess I'm not doing the feat justice as it's something that you must watch in action to really appreciate.
Nobody has posted a clip of the competition on YouTube yet, but there are some other clips of Kobayashi in action. Here's a
2001 clip with him stuffing down
40 pieces of sushi and 140 gyoza.
Astonishing and impressive. Now, do I want to be able to eat like that? No, way. There's no enjoyment of the food in competitive eating, and I like to at least taste to food

It's a heck of a way to make a living though. Kobayashi's won over $100,000 in prize money alone, and who knows how much in endorsements and such. Anyway, it makes for strange entertainment.
Now what should I eat for a midnight snack?
