The Linked Data Landscape in 2008

, , , , , , ,

For the latest issue of Talis Platform News I wrote a short retrospective of the first year of the Linking Open Data project. (Just before posting this blog entry I spotted that Mike Bergman has also written a great piece in a similar vein: Linked Data Comes of Age - great post Mike).

There are a few things I had to leave out of my piece to keep it brief. Here is my attempt to fill in some of the gaps. I didn't get the chance to mention WWW2007 in Banff, and how TimBL's Linked Data 'plug' in his keynote brought dozens of people to the informal get together we'd planned, and even more to the subsequent Dev Track session. There wasn't really room to talk about all the additional data sets that have joined the LOD web in the last twelve months, from huge new additions such as Riese, to the smaller but highly significant Lingvoj. Along the way these publishing efforts have been supported by tutorials such as Cool URIs for the Semantic Web and How to Publish Linked Data on the Web that build upon existing guidance available to developers and help to crystalise best practice in the field.

Now, early in 2008, the outlook looks even brighter. The deadline recently passed for submissions to the Linked Data on the Web (LDOW2008) workshop at WWW2008. We received 38 submissions in all, and from studying these during the review assignment process the quality appears exceptionally high. Luckily we have a superb Programme Committee to review the papers. Keeping the Linked Data flag flying high at WWW2008, Chris Bizer and I will be giving a talk with TimBL in the W3C Track of the conference. This will provide not just an introduction to the topic for Linked Data newbies, but a view of the state of the art fresh from the LDOW2008 workshop the previous day.

Fast forward to June, and we reach the first dedicated conference on the subject: Linked Data Planet, to be held from 17th - 18th in New York. This will be a great chance for LD pioneers from industry and academia to get together and chew the fat, and for those with a growing interest in the topic to find out more. An major bonus is the chance to see a keynote from TimBL dedicated to the subject of Linked Data.

No doubt in 2008 we'll see even more data sets published according to the LD principles, and I predict a headache for Richard Cyganiak as he tries to keep the superb Linking Open Data diagram updated  One of the most exciting trends I've observed in the last 12 months, and one which I expect to continue unrelentingly, is the rush of the Linked Data meme into the collective psyche of the Semantic Web community at large. The presence of "Linked Data" in the main tracks at ISWC2007 in Busan was noticeable, not least of which in paper such as this one about Sindice.

So, what started as a relatively obscure concept introduced by TimBL has grown into a niche interest minor obsession held by a few dozen enthusiasts, and from there snowballed into the mainstream. Sound familiar?
