Acer joins Open Handset Alliance, says devices planned for Q4 2009

, , ,

Today Acer issued a press release announcing that it has officially joined the Open Handset Alliance. The OHA is the organization founded by Google and others that supports the Linux based Android smartphone operating system.

Acer also said in the announcement that it expects to launch Android based devices in the fourth quarter of this year. The full press release is available after the jump.

London, 1st June 2009-Acer announces its joining of the Open Handset Alliance and expects to launch smartphones based on the Android platform in the fourth quarter of this year.

As a member of the Open Handset Alliance, Acer will work with its members to contribute to the development of the Android platform and bring consumers a far better user experience than much of what is available on today’s mobile platforms. By joining the Open Handset Alliance, Acer demonstrates its support for Android as an open mobile platform and its commitment to Android’s commercial success.

Android is a complete and open mobile phone software stack, featuring an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. It includes everything a manufacturer or operator needs to build a mobile phone. Android was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer.

There are over 40 members in the Open Handset Alliance, including mobile operators, handset manufacturers, software companies, and semi-conductor companies.

Acer takes on HP in home servers

, , ,

Acer plans to unveil its first home server for the U.S. market on Thursday, called the Acer Aspire easyStore Home Server.

The server is intended for home use as well as small businesses that have a need for networking multiple PCs. The easyStore will run Microsoft Windows Home Server. It enables users to access files, including photos, videos, and documents on any other computer connected to the network, and creates an image-based backup of each PC daily.

The home sever is an 8x7x7 inch shiny black box, powered by Intel's Atom processor 230 and 2GB of DDR2 memory. There is a 1TB hard drive as well as three bays for swappable hard drives. Together, the easyStore can hold up to 7TB of data. There are also five USB ports, one eSATA port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. The total price is $399.

Acer follows HP into the consumer home server market. Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP recently refreshed its MediaSmart server, and Acer's server has very similar specifications, including running Windows Home Server.

Microsoft announced its Windows Home Server product at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show, but has struggled to get strong backing from big-name computer makers other than HP. It also had to grapple with a well-publicized glitch that could lead to data loss under certain circumstances. It fixed that issue and added additional features with a"Power Pack 1" update last July.

Home servers in general have been a tough sell. Microsoft resorted to a mock children's book last year to explain why such a device is necessary in a home.

But Acer is diving in. This is part of Acer's effort to expand its market share by offering more products besides Netbooks, notebooks, and desktops in the U.S. Acer already sells the third most computers in the world after HP and Dell, and much of that is due to its success with low-cost laptop sales, and its acquisition of Gateway in 2007. Earlier this year the Taiwanese company also dipped its toe in the smartphone waters.

Acer to launch Gateway-branded netbook this year

, , , ...

Acer will finally launch its Gateway branded desktops and notebooks next week, and plans to launch servers and netbooks under the revived badge by the end of the year.

The Taiwanese vendor announced in February that it was reviving the Gateway brand it acquired back in 2007, and said it would ship machines aimed at SMEs and delivered through the channel in March.

However, three months on, it has confirmed that shipments in the UK are unlikely to begin till June. The firm will air its machines next week at Channel Expo, alongside a remote management package it is offering through dealers from Canada-based Level Platforms.

Philip Ashkar, managing director for the UK and Ireland at Gateway, said the products unveiled next week will include 12 inch and 15.4 inch notebooks, an ultra small desktop and a mini tower.

Asked if netbooks - a roaring success for parent brand Acer - would be launched under the Gateway brand, he said the firm expected to launch a netbook aimed at the SME market in the second half of the year.

"The notebook is the device you leave in the office of the home. The netbook is the device you bring around with you," he said. Asked if the vendor was holding off launching an SME flavoured notebook until Windows 7 hits the market he said the timing was "nothing to do” with the much anticipated MS OS.

Ashkar put the delay in getting Gateway up and running down to ironing out the "complexities" of setting up a distribution deal with C2000 throughout Europe, and to perfecting the products for the SME market. For example, he said that research had prompted the firm to ditch much of the usual preloaded software that comes on Acer's mainstream machines, as SMEs would simply wipe it and replace it with their preferred software images.

He denied the current economic turmoil had contributed to the delay. "It is a difficult time, but there are opportunities even in difficult times if you remain focused on the objectives you're after."

The objectives are to sign up 30 to 40 dealers in the UK, all focused on SMEs. Ashkar said no one had signed on the dotted line so far, but that a number of partners were now at the equipment testing stage, while others were assessing the firm's managed services offering. This comes from Canada-based Level Platforms, and Gateway will be the firm's main conduit for selling the service in Europe.

Jeff Campbell, vice president at Level Platforms, said resellers would be free to set the price for the service for their end users. He said the service would inventory their customers' IT assets and offer constant remote monitoring of their systems, as well as patch management.

The service would deliver alerts on customers' problems, so resellers would be able to offer a better service and provide a basis for higher value consulting services. It would also make it easier for resellers to show customers when and where systems needed upgrading. ®

Acer A1 Android Phone In 2009, Nokia/Dell Dissed

, , , ...

As with many up-and-coming Android Phone rumors, Acer’s Aspirations (see what I did there?) have always been apparent, but details were virtually non-existent. Then, at MWC2009 in February, we got wind of a sweet rumor that claimed Acer would have 2 Android Phones in 2009. A month later, we heard one might be called the Acer A1 and launch in September. Then, just last month, Acer’s Head of Mobile Products said a 2009 Acer Android was “likely”. It just got even more likely.

According to Reuters, that same official said that Acer will sell about 10 smartphone models this year, and all but one will be based on Windows Mobile. That last device? An Acer Android Phone:

“Late 2009, we’re releasing a smartphone… full touch, at the price of feature phones today,” he said.

Interesting though, that the article has no direct quotes saying the above quote references Android, but from the title we can assume (not sure how safely) that it was in the context of Android. Two other tidbits I found interesting were possible potshots at Nokia and Dell.

Nokia Can’t Make Computers
If a computer maker can get into smartphones, why can’t the reverse happen? Nokia is attempting to do just that, with plans to launch a line of laptops. But the Acer official all but laughed it off:

“For a handset maker to move into the PC business — I’d say it was almost impossible,” de Lencquesaing said. “One way is acquisition, another way is — if you’re willing — to invest massively and lose a lot of money for a long time.”

That first sentence… it just WREAKS of foreshadowing. Did anyone else immediatly think of Palm CEO Ed Colligan’s statement regarding Apple trying to enter the mobile phone market? In case you forgot that quote, here it is:

“We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone… PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”

And how wrong he was. Could Acer be just as wrong in this case?

Does Dell Get Dissed?
Acer and Dell are both computer companies trying to get into the Smartphone game. Dell hasn’t had the easiest time and some reports indicate they were pretty much laughed out of the United States with their two current prototypes. If Acer’s Aymar de Lencquesaing isn’t hinting at that in this quote, commenting on Acer’s negotiations with Carriers, feel free to call me out on reaching:

“We’re in discussions with all of them. To date none of them has said ‘thanks, but no thanks, and never come back,’” he said.

Ouch. Any way you look at it, A1 or another name, I would love to see an Acer Android Phone launch before the end of the year.

Acer says US smartphones won't arrive until 2010

, , ,

Acer has been busy showing off one smartphone after the other over the past few months, and making promises about at least one Android-based device, but it now looks like folks in the US will have to wait a bit longer than expected to actually get their hands on 'em. While complete details are a bit light, according to Gearlog, the phones are being held up as a result of some snags with US carriers, and the first phones now likely won't make their debut until some unspecified point in 2010. Presumably, that means the phones are still on track for a release overseas this year, and there's no doubt at least a slight chance that the situation could change over here before the year is out.

Acer Aspire One 531 to come in two flavors: Pro and… not pro

, ,

The Acer Aspire One 531 netbook first showed up on Acer’s German web site earlier this month. Then it disappeared for a little while. Now it’s back, and it’s not alone. It looks like Acer will be selling two very similar netbooks, an Aspire One 531 and an Aspire One Pro 531.

Both models sport 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel displays and a choice of a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 or 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, accompanied by either an Intel 945GSE Express Chipset or an Intel 82801GBM chipset. Both netbooks come with 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and optional 3G modems.

But here’s where things start to get a bit different. The Aspire One Pro 531 is available with Windows Vista Business, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Home. The standard 531 model just comes with XP Home. The Pro also supports hard drives up to 250GB or a 64GB SSD, while the standard model comes with a 160GB hard drive.

The 531 is a tiny bit smaller than the Pro model, measuring 255mm x 183mm x 26.9mm versus the Aspire One Pro 531’s 259.4mm x 186.8mm x 33.1mm. The weight depends on the battery and storage configurations, but the 531 is generally a little lighter than the Pro as well.

In related news, the Aspire One A531 is now shipping in Italy, and Netbook News Italy has posted an unboxing video which you can check out after the break.

Recurring Rumor: Nvidia Ion Netbooks Coming Next Month

, ,

Acer officially launched the first Nvidia Ion powered computer with its nettop AspireRevo last week, and like we have been hearing for months now, the Nvidia Ion netbooks are on the way.

Pocket-Lint.com is reporting that a number of companies are preparing to announce Nvidia Ion powered netbooks in June and many of them will be available as soon as July.

The site’s source was hesitant to reveal which companies would unveil Ion netbooks, but “confirmed that there will be some big announcements from ‘key’ players at Computex, the annual PC trade show in Taipei at the beginning of June.”

Nvidia’s Ion graphics solution combines Intel’s Atom processor with GeForce 9400M graphics. We reviewed the Ion Reference Design and were impressed with its graphics performance and are drooling to finally see it hit netbooks.

Acer Aspire One D250 available for pre-order in Japan

,

The Acer Aspire One D250 is a lot like the Aspire One D150. Both have 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel displays, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drives, and run Windows XP. But while the D150 has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, the D250 has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor. That .06GHz isn’t going to make a world of difference in performance, but the N280 CPU also has a faster front side bus and consumes a little less electricity than the N270 which should help provide better battery life.

The Aspire One D250 first showed up on Acer’s UK web site a few weeks ago. Now it’s available for pre-order from at least one retailer in Japan. Sofmap is taking orders for 49,800 yen or about $502 US. The store says the laptop should begin shipping around April 24th.

The D250 will probably cost a lot less if and when it’s released in the US.

HP and Acer to push metal chassis notebooks, says paper

, ,

First-tier PC vendors expect the shipment proportion of notebooks with a magnesium-aluminum alloy or aluminum chassis to increase by the end of the year, according to a Chinese-language Apply Daily report.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) expects magnesium-aluminum alloy models to account for 20-30% of its notebook shipments this year, up from 10% in 2008, while Acer expects aluminum notebook shipments to increase from 15% in the first quarter to 20% by the end of the year, the paper noted.

Packard Bell introduces 10.1 inch and 11.6 inch Dot netbooks

, ,

The reports of the Packard Bell Dot netbook’s death appear to have been mildly exaggerated. I reported back in March that Packard Bell was pulling the plug on its 8.9 inch version of the Dot, a netbook which is little more than a rebranded Acer Aspire One anyway (Acer owns the Packard Bell brand). But Notebook Italia is reporting that the Dot has been reborn, in the form of two new laptops.

The Packard Bell Dot S has a 10.1 inch display and the Dot M has an 11.6 inch. 1366 x 768 pixel screen. They’ll come with WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G options and multitouch trackpads. The rest of the specs are pretty much par for the netbook course, with 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drives, webcams, and 5-in-1 flash memory card readers. The Dot M will have a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU instead of the more common 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor. This CPU should offer better battery life, but marginally slower performance.

The notebooks look a lot like recently announced laptops from Acer. But I have to wonder, can you get away with calling an 11.6 inch laptop “Dot?” I mean, the name works for an 8.9 inch netbook, but Packard Bell is sort of pushing the boundaries of netbookdom here.

According to Notebook Italia, the Dot S will run 299 Euros and should hit the streets in some areas this week. The Dot M will be availale later in April for 399 Euros.
