Opera Translation Team

community-based volunteer translation

Do you want to help Opera succeed in your country?

, ,

We're very proud that our browser(s) are used all over the world. However, we still have a lot of work to do to reach out to new Opera users — especially non-English speaking Web surfers. So far, we've created mini-websites in multiple languages. But our goal for 2008 is to go all out, with much more extensive localization of opera.com (and our other sites) into many different languages (within our target markets). To do this, we are taking a community-driven approach and we're asking for your help because you know what Opera stands for and how our messaging should be like in your own native language.

Users in different countries have routinely contacted us; asking to help translate our websites. Except a small team of volunteer translators, we haven't been able to accommodate most of those requests... Until now.

We're now implementing a new system that will allow many more to help us produce localized and translated Web sites.

Join the Team

We're actively looking for volunteer translators from different regions and languages. Our goal is to translate opera.com into:

  • Chinese,
  • Russian,
  • German,
  • Polish,
  • Korean,
  • Hindi
  • Japanese,
  • Spanish,
  • Portuguese, and
  • Indonesian

If you speak any of these languages (and English), we can really use your help.

We care about other languages too, but the languages above our are first priority.

edit: After considering your feedback and going over our plans, we've decided to add Indonesian to the list! Furthermore, with so many people volunteering to help with so many languages, we will see if we can find a way to accomodate more languages sooner. When we work something out, we'll be sure to let you know.

To test the system, we're launching a pilot project to translate opera.com into two forms of Chinese, before following up with other languages after that.

Ok, Cool. What's in it for me?

You'll be a member of the Opera Translation Team. We can't pay you, but we can provide you with special gear and you'll be publicly recognized as a member of the team. You'll also get to work firsthand with Opera employees and take part in the behind-the-scenes action of what we do here at Opera.

What we're Looking For:

Enthusiastic, self-motivated translators who have excellent English-language skills and exceptional writing ability in their native language (see the list above). All translations will be reviewed and edited by professional editors and given final review by a marketing agency. As such, we ask that our volunteers are willing to contribute, but not retain ownership of the final translation copy.

Our slots are limited, and we plan to get started right away, so if you think you can contribute to this cause, please send us a translation sample or learn more.

koozoo 12. February 2008, 18:01

Where is the sample?

RF

Maulkin 12. February 2008, 18:05

I guess you just need to pick up some text in the Opera Website and then send it in english then in your language.

edvakf 13. February 2008, 03:17

Can more than 1 persons be the translaters for a language? I might want to volunteer, but I don't think I can translate all of opera.com alone, and I'm not too knowledgeable about technical things.

rezadotcom 13. February 2008, 04:12

what about the Persian ( Farsi ) ? :D

d4n3 13. February 2008, 13:16

Lawmune 13. February 2008, 22:01

Hi all,

The response has been great so far, and we really appreciate all the enthusiasm.

Just to clarify, we are interested in publishing opera.com in as many languages as possible, but obviously we have to start out with a few languages before we expand our scope (which we plan to do!).

In terms of a sample, please pick a nice paragraph or two of text from opera.com or operamini.com and send a translation of it to the email address listed above.

We will have more than one translator per language. Each language will have a team of translators working together.

More details to come...

GoJoeGo 14. February 2008, 09:51

@atalhos: so... what are you paying to use my.opera.com? Using it for free? Shame on you!

Lawmune 14. February 2008, 22:55

After considering your feedback and going over our plans, we've decided to add Indonesian to the list! Furthermore, with so many people volunteering to help with so many languages, we will see if we can find a way to accomodate more languages sooner. When we work something out, we'll be sure to let you know.

JAAV 19. February 2008, 22:12

I was the unofficial Opera translator for Portugal, for long time, but some atitutes from Opera house, to put in pack multi language translations from a translator who was paid and has copied 98% from my work, made in part time and with a special interest, made me stop it.
The changement suddnely from strings type did not help enough (we have a tool made before to compare the changes, after it we lost some work did before from someone who want help)
Please give me some thing to get new interest and to return to this job, otherwise i'll thinking about.

sandalian 19. February 2008, 23:04

Lawmune 20. February 2008, 21:24

+1 for French translation, Maulkin.

I've already translated many Opera technical resources for opera-fr.com's homepage, FAQ and wiki. I'm still updating unofficial 9.x Opera Desktop translation for french users.

If needed, i can try to find other volunteers to help in the great task
