Do I love you? Yes, I do. Of course I do. How could I not love you?

How could a man like me be unable and unwilling to see the qualities in a woman like you that make her richly deserving of his love? I love you for those qualities but also for some endearing weaknesses that are part of your being you.

Why haven't I told you that I love you, then? I will not give a specific explanation, but let me suggest some possible reasons.

As you can read in the banner, I am a word-shy Jutlander. We tend to avoid big words. Which also includes short words with big meanings. We generally prefer to say too little rather than too much. That's just how it is. And has been for centuries.

I am also a coward. Yes, I know that this is only a limited part of the truth about me. So many different personalities live in me, also including a fearless hero who may place himself in the center of danger and meet with a smile whatever comes at him. But the coward should not be forgotten. He may sometimes have the final decission. And he may decide that he dares not tell someone that he loves her.

And then there is the old problem with the ranking. You deserve the undisputed position as no. 1 in a man's heart, and I cannot give you that position because someone else already has it. You certainly have a warm place in my heart, like several others have, but it is not the one that you deserve. You deserve the very best that a man can give you. It would be an insult against you to offer you anything less, while still trying to make it look like something special.

Many years ago I visited a friend in a neighboring town. We had a merry night in town and sometime the next morning I was lying in the guest bed, in the waking state. I was lying on my back and something had for some time been pressing softly against my stomach. Something warm. And there was this mysterious sound:

One of the most miraculously beautiful incidents I have ever had the good luck of witnessing was my old, seriously ill mother lying in a hospital bed, a young nurse bending over her to arrange the pillow better, my mother lifting her hand and stroking the smooth cheek above her head and the young woman immediately returning the caress.
