Safari 4 Fundamental Browsing Bugs

, ,

I updated Safari 3.2 to Safari 4 on WinXP. In the first two minutes, here is what I found:

Safari 4 on WinXP has a serious crash bug. I click the Wikipedia site on a Top Sites square, click back, click the Wikipedia square again and crash!

Safari 4 on WinXP also has a serious navigation history bug. I click on a Top Sites square, wait for page to load, click back, then click the same square again. There is no back button enabled, the forward button is enabled but it doesn't do anything.

For a final release product from a proud company, that is ridiculous and shameful. So much for the speed improvements, if in the first two minutes I have trouble navigating and have crashes by doing something extremely fundamental ... browsing.

Image source with http:/ (only one slash)

, , , ...

Just came across a HTML 4.01 Strict Web page with an image tag, however the image didn't display in Opera. What's going on here?

Then I reluctantly start up IE, visit the page and ... no image??? Surely the publisher of this page didn't upload it and forget to verify everything was working correct. A home page with a hyperlinked big image. C'mon!

Maybe the publisher is one of those Firefox nuts. Load the page in Firefox and lo and behold: a big image loads. Hmm. Safari loads the image, too.

View source. IMG tag has a src of "http:/domain.com/image.jpg" (only one slash, not two)

Paste whole image URI in the address bar and all browsers will convert the one slash to two slashes. It seems Firefox and Safari will do the conversion for a HTML src attribute as well, even with a Strict doctype.

Which way is correct? Sounds like a dilemma for the HTML 5 spec guys. Anne van Kesteren!

Opera 10 Alpha 1 Bugs and Regressions

, ,

Some bugs and regressions found in Opera 10 Alpha 1. This list is sure to have more added to it.
  • Show Images icon in the bottom right corner has reverted back to Show Images / Cache Images. It does not include No Images, only in dropdown.
  • [FIXED] Opera:* do not show up in address bar search list. It does in the address bar dropdown.
  • Email connection fails to login to account very frequently.
  • Email Mark as Read has a tick icon. This makes the menu item appear enabled, even when it actually isn't.
  • Spell checking underlines appear in the Opera source viewer for tags.
  • Quick transfer links detect a same filename "test.zip" and automatically rename to "test (1).zip". However, a third quick transfer will not rename to "test (2).zip", it will download to "test (1).zip" and completely overtake the second transfer even if the second transfer is still downloading.
  • Scroll marker is enabled by default. This should be rectified by final release.
